Ex Keo

Heinrich Brüssow says he is determined to get back into the Springboks fold but stressed he won’t change his style of play to achieve that.

Brüssow was a surprise exclusion from the squad for the England series for some, but those privy to coach Heyneke Meyer’s selection criteria understood that he was concerned about the Cheetahs opensider’s limitations, particularly in terms of ball-carrying. Meyer was also wary of the high ratio of penalties to steal attempts Brüssow conceded, feeling he could be a liability in Test matches.

Meyer opted for Marcell Coetzee in Schalk Burger’s injury-enforced absence. The Sharks youngster impressed, looking at home on the Test stage and seemingly fitting the bill of the all-rounder Meyer wants in the No 6 shirt.

Coetzee, Burger and the Stormers’ Siya Kolisi, whom Meyer rates highly, are ahead of Brüssow in the pecking order at this point. And while the 25-year-old is desperate to play Test rugby once more, he said he won’t compromise his strengths in pursuit of that goal.

‘Not making the squad for the England series hurt, especially since I’ve been there before and know what the environment is like. There’s nothing like playing Test rugby and to miss out on that was disappointing,’ he told keo.co.za.

‘How I respond now is crucial. I didn’t see it as a negative thing entirely though. It is a challenge for me to play well enough to get back there. But I won’t change my style of play. I’m not the ball carrier they are looking for, that’s not my strength. I could bulk up but then I’ll compromise my strength – my ability to get to the breakdown quickly and contest the ball. It’s the way I’ve played my entire professional career and I can’t change now.’

Brüssow said he was aware that this stance would make it more difficult to break into the squad again, but explained that he would build his case for inclusion by attempting to excel at his craft.

They did really well playing with the type of openside the coach prefers, so I’m in no position to complain,’ he said. ‘But the key for me is to become so efficient at what I do that it makes it very difficult for the selectors to ignore me. That means I’ve worked very hard on my speed, so that I get around the park quicker, which in turn would potentially give me that half second more to get to the breakdown first and turnover or slow possession.

Speed, timing, anticipation and sharp decision-making is crucial for any opensider. If I can get those areas of my game to where I want them to, I hope it will force a rethink for the Springboks.’

Brüssow, however, added that he wasn’t approaching the Cheetahs’ remaining Super Rugby matches as an opportunity to make a statement. ‘No, that’s not the case at all. If I have anything to prove it is to myself. I want to get to the goals I have set for myself and in the process help the Cheetahs to finish the season strongly. If the by-product of that is Springbok selection then great.’

Go for it Hienrich - one thing you do have is the heart of a forward so good luck. It justs shows what some competition can do. Will keep a beady eye on Brussouw.

How can anyone not like this fellow? What a fantastic attitude! I still think he has plenty to offer the Springboks, and with his line of thinking, I think we will once again see him in the Springbok Jersey. Something people tend to forget about him is how effective he is as a tackler..

Look he must work hard as he says he will do and show he can be effective. However the rest of the pack must shpae up ie provide the necessary gainline drive and power. Then there could be  place for him. The guy is all heart. so one can only wish him well.

Meyer must keep an open mind on this. And no Heyneke we dont want wee stegsies at 6!

We will need him - especially against the AB's - to limit the continuity and off-loading from the ground. That is the biggest difference between AB's and everyone else. When they get tackled they are always looking for the runner for the backhand flip, pop pass etc. So tough to defend against without a true fetcher getting in the way. Blew the doors off the Irish in the 3rd test. In the 2nd test Irish stayed close because those types of passes were not going to hand or attempted as frequently. With both Cruden and SBW always looking to offload in the 3rd test it was lights out.

Boks would do well to learn from this. English were cutting us down in the 3rd test going low, but this would have allowed ball carriers hands to be free for offload. Instead, we only look to protect possession, place the ball backwards. Needs to be a balance, but they will not learn the timing and space required unless they are coached and practice it. Only person I see in the Bok backline actively looking to do this is F Steyn and I think it is the French influence.

With Brussouw and Bismarck always at the breakdown I think our chances are greatly increased in defending this type of broken field play from the All Blacks. In every other aspect of play I think we are on par or superior, but as we all know test matches often come down to those moments between the set pieces.

I would like Flo back in the mix as well, but Brussouw on form is a must against the AB's especially!

I think Pocock (that 2nd best Number 7 in the world) had a hand in Brussow's demise!

Well I suppose it is not like he can suddenly grow in height to become an option in the lineout or a carrier like Alberts.

Brussow  is obviously a very good and nice person - but I think he has a serious problem in playing the game of rugby.   He started off brilliantly and everybody was impressed by him.   However, in the World Cup he was totally ineffective and in the Super 15 this year equally so.    That remains a problem that he and all his supporters have to face.  The question mark is how many balls did he "fetch"  this year even when he got to the point of breakdown early enough - which effectively is the only way players can affect turn-overs nowadays?   Really very few in Super 15 this year.   Speed and strength is an issue in this case.   Bismarck at 116 kgs is extremely strong and cant be pushed over - Brussow less so and he was this year really ineffective.

A further problem for Brussow is that although he is a good defender - he does not have enough speed to get to breakdown points.  He also is not a real ball carrier that would make him effective in attack.   In line-outs - due to his height he plays no roll at all.

Meyer obviously looked carefully at his performance and decided he is not up to standard - hence his ommission from the squad.   Persoanlly i think that Meyer would not make his feelings public and used the issue of penalties arising from "fetchuing" as an excuse.

I myself looked at the work rate of Coetzee in the latest series - really effetive in defence and otherwise - and I do not believe that Brussow would come into the picture again.     There are too many shortcomings in his game on the whole.

Yes mike, but he is yet to play a test where we loose against NZ! Must count for something?

"He won't change his style of play" - does that mean he will continue to:

1. Not carry the ball up?

2. Not jump in lineouts?

3. Not play utility at 6,7 or 8?

5. Not be part of a running backline?

4. play the ONLY role he is good at? - the role of a mole!
