Bryan Habana, South Africa's record try-scorer, has disclosed the deep trust issues that led to a severed relationship with his father, who mismanaged his finances for years. On the Business of Sport podcast, Habana spoke candidly about the betrayal that cost him a significant amount of money and emotional turmoil.

Habana expressed, "Trust is a massive element that’s not always easy. When you’re young, who are the people you trust? Is it your parents? Is it your family? A lawyer?" The rugby icon, who placed immense trust in his father to manage his commercial deals from a young age, discovered years later that this trust was misplaced. "I unfortunately lost quite a bit of money because of one person I thought I could trust, who mismanaged my funds and used it for his own over the course of eight years," he revealed.

"I thought we had signed a trust document for the Bryan Habana Trust which I then find out never ever existed."

The realization of his father's mismanagement came to a head around his marriage to Janine Viljoen in 2009, when discrepancies and unfulfilled promises began surfacing more frequently. Habana shared how the supposed control his father had over his finances led to a chaotic and manipulative scenario around their wedding, which was meant to be intimate but turned into a public spectacle managed by his father.

Eventually, the situation escalated when Habana transitioned from the Bulls to the Stormers and needed funds for a house in Cape Town. "He goes, ‘it’s cool, it’s coming’. The more I’d ask the more the money wasn’t coming," Habana recounted the frustration of trying to secure his financial future.

By the start of 2010, Habana took matters into his own hands, nullifying any contracts handled by his father and handling his affairs directly or through his lawyer. This shift revealed the depth of the financial mismanagement, including a nonexistent trust and misappropriated funds from major sponsorship deals.

Despite being one of South Africa's highest-paid players at the time, the betrayal from his father was something Habana could not overlook. "All the money was gone," he said, detailing not only the financial loss but also the personal betrayal that led to a 15-year estrangement.

The saga serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges athletes can face off the field, particularly when it involves family and finances. Habana's story is not just about the loss of money, but the shattering of trust and familial bonds.
