It was a night of intense rugby action as the Vodacom Bulls put an end to their seven-match skid with a nail-biting 26-24 victory over Pau in the Investec Champions Cup. The Bulls, led by coach Johan Ackermann, lifted themselves to fourth in Pool 3, nudging ahead of Pau and keeping their playoff dreams alive.

The game kicked off with the Bulls charging out of the gates. A mere three minutes in, loose forward Mpilo Gumede found the try line, capitalizing on a slick skip-pass from hooker Akker van der Merwe. Although Handre Pollard missed the conversion, the try set the tone for the evening.

Pau wasn’t going to lie down without a fight, responding with a well-orchestrated maul that saw hooker Youri Delhommel touch down for a try. The Bulls, however, struggled with errors and discipline. Pollard’s missed opportunities and a yellow card to lock Reinhardt Ludwig didn’t help their cause. The half ended with Pau gaining momentum, courtesy of tries from Jimi Maximin and another from Delhommel.

The second half saw both teams grappling with worsening conditions, stifling the flow of the game. Pau extended their lead with a penalty by Thomas Souverbie. Despite the setbacks, the Bulls displayed flashes of brilliance. Cheswill Jooste, in particular, dazzled with a crucial try that brought the Bulls back into contention.

"The Vodacom Bulls create a try out of nothing. Cheswill Jooste brings the visitors right back into this match with just over 10 minutes to play."

With the clock ticking down, Nizaam Carr’s late try not only secured the bonus point but also reignited the Bulls’ playoff hopes. As the final whistle approached, Pau threatened to steal the game, but Jeandre Rudolph’s crucial penalty win in the dying moments sealed the deal for the Bulls.

Pau’s efforts were commendable with Delhommel’s double and Maximin’s contribution, but it was the Bulls who walked away with the last laugh, thanks to their late surge and strategic plays in critical moments.

Coach Johan Ackermann praised his team’s resilience, saying, "Tonight was about character. We’ve faced a tough season, but the boys showed what they are made of. This win is a significant boost for our team morale and playoff aspirations."

In a match fraught with drama and a test of endurance, the Bulls have kept their dreams alive, proving that in rugby, it's not over until the final whistle.
