Johan Ackermann isn't mincing words when it comes to the Vodacom Bulls' woes on the defensive front. With the team's defensive stats looking more like a leaking faucet than a fortress, the pressure's on as they head into a clash with the Northampton Saints this Sunday at Franklin’s Gardens, fresh off a defeat at the hands of Bordeaux Bègles.

The Bulls' defensive struggles are glaring, with a tally of 27 tries conceded in just six URC matches, plus a bonus seven from their last game against Bordeaux. Ackermann admits,

"Defence is a big thing for us. Our defensive record this season is not good enough – that’s something we’re well aware of and something we keep talking about as a coaching group and as players."

Despite a tackle completion rate of 81%, it's clear that the team's issues run deeper than missed tackles alone.

Ackermann detailed the cascade of errors contributing to their recent defeat: "If you look at that second half against Bordeaux, for about 20 minutes we couldn’t exit our half. We gave away penalties, lost breakdowns, they kicked to the corner, we held them up over the line, then we kicked and conceded another penalty. If you give one of the top teams constant entries into your 22, you’re going to concede somewhere."

The coach also highlighted the ripple effect of mistakes across the board. "You can only afford to make so many mistakes. But if we don’t fix the other things – discipline, exits, breakdowns and positioning – we’re not going to make it easy for ourselves."

On the personnel front, the Bulls are shaking things up, with Kade Wolhuter stepping in as flyhalf in place of the resting Handre Pollard. Ackermann explained the choice: "Kade is a natural 10 – that’s his position. He’s trained well, he’s settled in with how we want to play, and he’s now had a few weeks with us. He’s played at a high level before, so it’s not like we’re throwing in a young guy for the first time. This is his opportunity, and we want to see how he goes against one of the best teams."

With competition for places fierce, Ackermann stressed the importance of performance: "If you look at the Springboks, you’re never certain you’re going to play a Test. No one is guaranteed a jersey. Players must play their best to stay there, and that’s the environment we want. Kade gets his chance now, and Keagan must keep challenging – and he will get opportunities again."

The Bulls are clearly in a period of recalibration, and Sunday's game will be a significant test of their ability to turn their defensive narrative around. Meanwhile, the Sharks are also looking to rebound in their European campaign, hoping to rediscover their bite in the upcoming matches.
