In a thrilling display of power and precision, the Vodacom Bulls trampled Zebre with a decisive 54-19 victory, enhancing their chances for a home playoff in the URC. Despite the triumph, clouds loom over the fitness of young winger Cheswill Jooste, who exited the game with a hamstring injury after scoring in the first half.

The 19-year-old sensation was replaced by Stedman Gans as the second half commenced, casting a shadow on what was otherwise a stellar performance by the Bulls. "The only little bit of, if I can call it, a negative is that Cheswill hurt his hamstring," Coach Ackermann revealed the concern post-match, emphasizing the uncertainty of the situation. “It’s undetermined. We’ll have to make a medical assessment to see how serious it is.”

"First of all, job done. I think that’s the most important,"

Ackermann expressed satisfaction with the result but not without critiquing his team's performance. The game, according to him, lacked fluidity at times and was marred by "a few unnecessary penalties, some silly knocks." However, he praised the team's ability to capitalize when it mattered. “Over the 80 minutes when we needed to score, we scored, and when we needed to defend, we defended well.”

The coach also highlighted potential pitfalls as the playoffs approach, cautioning that the errors seen in the game against Zebre could be detrimental against stronger teams. "We just gave away soft errors," he pointed out. "Hopefully we tidy up those things because against the teams we’re going to play going forward, they will punish you."

Despite the mixed performance, Ackermann took solace in the depth tested during the match. The heavily rotated squad, which saw 10 changes, allowed several players to clock valuable minutes. “Marco [van Staden] played 80 minutes [at hooker], Willie [le Roux] played 80 minutes [at flyhalf] and hasn’t done that for a long time. Canan [Moodie] got good game time [in the midfield] coming back from injury and a lot of combinations were tested,” he noted, optimistic about the experience gained by his players.

As the Bulls gear up for the upcoming challenges, the integration of bench players in crucial moments remains a key strategy. “If we get players off the bench in the next couple of weeks, at least everybody has experience starting and coming off the bench and making a difference,” Ackermann concluded, hopeful for a robust playoff run.
