After winning gold in the WC short course 100 meters race - the 30 year old Van der Burgh announced his retirement from swimming and indicated he is moving to London to start a new career in the commercial field.
Van der Berg and Le Clos were in a league of their own insofar as SA swimming as a sport is concerned. In female swimming the great Penny Heinz is borne in mind.
Van der Burgh was lucky on this site - he was never under attack by Mozart and co, while the nasty attacks on Le Clos was intense and they managed to demean themselves in the process.
Van den Burgh is retiring from the sport in a blaze of glory - wish other sportsmen (especially in rugby) follow his example by not overstaying their welcome and shredding their own reputation in the process.
