B LIAM NAPIER

Beauden Barrett aptly summed it up, imploring the Hurricanes to rekindle their attacking heritage.

Since day dot, the Hurricanes have flourished through flamboyance. It's in their DNA. Sure, a balance between structure and the sublime needs to be struck. And, historically, that has not been the case with this team.

But this year, the scales seem well out of kilter. The Hurricanes have become too introverted. Cullen and co would barely recognise their style of play.

"In the way we play there's room for us to play with that freedom," assistant coach Alama Ieremia claimed.

The Cheetahs aside, only when games have been beyond them have they managed to flick the switch and genuinely back themselves. Only when there's no pressure do they ditch the conservative, kick-heavy tactics and have a crack.

That was the case in the final 10-minutes of the loss to the Brumbies and, once again, true in the flattering 35-31 defeat to the Highlanders on Friday.

"It's easy to play that sort of game when you're desperate," Barrett said. "We've got to ask ourselves why we leave it so late to push that button. Why can't it just be our normal game?"

Andre Taylor epitomises the sort of attacking spark that's been missing. The fullback endured a form slump last year, when he became too predictable. He returned with a bang in Dunedin.

"We needed that impact, that injection off the bench," Barrett said. "He's been missing for a while. It was good to see him come back and put his hand up."

Taylor's attacking guile needs harnessing, not hindering. After his standout cameo it would be a major surprise if he does not start against the Crusaders this week.

Selecting Marty Banks at fullback highlights the conservative game plan. Playing two receivers has merit, but the more Barrett touches the ball, the better the Hurricanes look.

The All Blacks playmaker was at the fore of his side's comeback, scoring two tries in a personal haul of 26 points to back up his return to form against the Cheetahs.

"I'm happy if the team's winning and we're playing well. I'd much rather play bad and see this team win than going out and losing each week," Barrett said.

Banks' struggles under the high ball were a major factor, along with collective ill-discipline and continued, basic handling errors. The visitors, who were starved of possession in the first half, also failed to adjust to the Highlanders' aggression at the breakdown.

The form of All Blacks halfback TJ Perenara is also revealing. Much like the team, he seems to be suffering a confidence crisis. His struggles are symptomatic of the team's overall direction.

This backward step makes last week's shellacking of the Cheetahs appear a one-off. Staring down the barrel of a 1-4 record, surely it's time to heed Barrett's plea to unleash the attack.

Again the headline is a bit misleading. Barrett does want to see the attacking style of rugby but he does point out that he would rather win ugly if that is what it takes.
Barrett has been in top form. I have always thought he will end up ahead of Cruden  in ranking of NZ fly-halves but we need both so it is not a big deal either way.
I don't agree that TJ Perenara has been in a form slump. He is second in the points earned in Fantasy rugby for half-backs. I know this is not the definitive measure of performance but it supports my point, lol

Alot of people are dising Cruden after ONE Chiefs loss and saying there is Carter and then there is daylight and then there is Cruden (Sasu I am looking at you ) BUT I disagree - and I have history to back me up and what better history than the pressure cooker of RWCs. Cruden beat the Wallabies in a RWC SF and helped win a RWC while Carter did...............yep that's right 2003, 2007 and same in 2011.
I am most willing to be proved wrong of course BUT Crudens 2 S15 Titles with the Chiefs says I am not far off the mark.
Barrett is ok but I reckon Benji Marshall with the right coaching input as SBW and Folau can also be an X-Factor.

Hard to blame the coach for that last Canes loss ...

.....credit must also go to the Highlanders who like the Force are very much improved outfits from last year..

Barret is an awesome flyhalf but he's not a natural leader...thats where Cruden has the edge over Barret...and the Super XV titles to back that up

Barrett has not been given the same chances Cruden has to prove himself for a simple reason, Cruden has played so well he has kept Barrett in a bench role. So Cruden has been doing very well - no disputing that.
My point is Barrett will keep getting better & may pass Cruden. No worries though because we need both & we have both

The canes need to have a tight 5 before they can beat the best teams, otherwise it is touch rugby stuff

Brycy: good point mate. Cruden is better at steering the ship & is more the total package. We will have to see if they can round Barrett out.
Beeno: I accept your insight into pop guns, the Bok level first-fives look like they are taking pop guns to a missile fight. Results of such folly are shown below & on the scoreboards

Ha ha Beeno, good come back. Hope your insights will help the hapless stormers, I think they are in need of some advice as they have their share of pop guns.

@brycy,

"Hard to blame the coach for that last Canes loss ..."
its only hard to blame if ur not a canes supporter.

players are responsible for the way they implement a coaches plan, and the coach is responsible for that plan.

hammets plans in this so called bullshit change of culture has been the biggest farce in wellington rugby ever.
in turn the style which the hurricanes of old used which saw them play in plenty of finals has been replaced by this cheap crusties knock off, and the highlanders game last week was but another chapter in hammets epic book of failures.

"Barret is an awesome flyhalf but he's not a natural leader...thats where Cruden has the edge over Barret...and the Super XV titles to back that up"
u dont need to be  natural leader to be an awesome flyhalf, only the most diehard chiefs fan would say that cruden has had a better season the barret to date.

to be an awesome flyhalf, u only need to be able to do all the flyhlaf fundamentals and run a backline, barret can all that and then some.

crudz is still my No2 flyhalf for the All Blacks, but im not impressed with his 2014 form to date.
im subscribe to the theory that forwards make better captains then back, and theres only been three exceptions that beg to differ in my lifetime, and cuden is not one of them.
cruden needs to lose the chiefs captaincy so he can focus on his own game.

Sas i'm probably a bigger Canes fan than you are if yr fantasy team is anything to go by...no one wants the Canes to succeed more than me. I support all NZ teams and you won't catch me coming on here trashing any NZ teams like some people i know...

..but blaming the coach for their last loss after racking up 60 pts the previous week is a little bit convenient don't you think? i doubt the plan was much different..

..you might be oversimplifying things by just saying Hammet is to blame without factoring in some of the individual players performances...not just Canes players either but Aaron Smith who was awesome showing he's the best halfback in NZ and Sopoanga whos doing well also for example...

..that's what Beauden Barret is saying here i think that he wants players to put their hand up and be more accountable for their own performances...

...the Canes have shown they're capable of winning despite Hammet and proving that emphatically against the Cheetahs...good to see Barret speaking up too as he probably should be taking more of a leadership role...

Cruden should relinquish his captaincy based on one game they lost all season by 3 points ?

...like i said he's a natural born leader , inspirational as Chiefs player of the year for the last two years and as you know he's captained the NZ Under 20s...not to mention as standoff he's dictating all the plays like a General anyway..Messam has also given him the mana saying he prefers Cruden to do all the talking to the ref...

..but i'm happy for you to say Carter is miles ahead but the last two semi finals between the Crusaders and Chiefs, the Chiefs won and Cruden came out on top... Carter can no longer even play a full season but i'm glad we're keeping him wrapped in cottonwool as he is a class act ...

...plenty of standoffs available for the RWC next year but wish i could say the same about centres...both the Chiefs and the Crusaders lacking line breakers at the moment don't you think???...

... not sure what Hansen will do either as Conrad Smith is not as young as he used to be...Ben Smith is a bit small for centre ...we need a few more league converts and just as well SBW is coming back next year...

Well if abs wc starting xv starts tommorro. Thats if tommorro was next year haha.
1. Hames2. Coles3. O Franks4. Retilluck5. Whitelock6. Luatua7. Mccaw (c)8. Read9. Smith10. Carter11. Savea12. Sbw13. Smith14. Jane15. B Smith

All this considered though, hansen has said he well be picking players based on form, and if he has too carter and mccaw well be dropped if their form is not up to standard. If theyre not then cruden or barratt at ten, and cane or todd at 7. Canes have their processes sorted, they just need to be more consistent and deliebarate.
