Springboks Chean Roux no longer Bok defence coach2016-10-18 10:04SHARE THISChean Roux (Gallo Images)Related Links

Cape Town - Chean Roux has reportedly been relieved of his duties as defence coach of the Springboks.

Roux, who is employed by SA Rugby, acted as defence coach for the national team in 2016, but according toRapport, that will no longer be the case on the Springboks’ end of year tour to Europe next month.

The Boks struggled on defence this year, with the team conceding 22 tries in six Rugby Championship matches, including nine in their final match against New Zealand in Durban.

The Lions’ JP Ferreira and the Bulls’ Pine Pienaar have been identified as possible successors, although the appointment will only be for the duration of the year-end tour, the Afrikaans newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, SA Rugby is also keen to improve the national team’s attack, with backline experts Swys de Bruin (Lions) and Franco Smith (Cheetahs) seemingly in SA Rugby’s sights.

SA Rugby is expected to announce the appointments after Saturday’s Currie Cup final between the Free State Cheetahs and Blue Bulls in Bloemfontein.

On their year-end tour, the Springboks will face the Barbarians (London, November 5), England (London, November 12), Italy (Florence, November 19) and Wales (Cardiff, November 26).

Good riddance to this clown. How did he get the position in the first place. This will surely be an improvement on defence.
Getting Swiss and Franco involved on attack sounds good as well. Surely Stick Quota  must make way.

He is the fall guy - I am afraid.   The poor guy had to put up with some of the worst defenders in international rugby and those include Morne Steyn, Juan de Jongh, Habana, Hougaard, Alberts and Louw.   Louw has a low tackle count and Alberts virtually never get near enough to ball carriers to make tackles.    In the rare event Alberts get tp them he is as likely to male a tackle as he is to miss one.
The guy to be fired should be Stick and for good measure Coetzee as well.

He had no experience as a defence coach coming into the job, so the guys who should get the stick are those who thought it was a good idea to appoint someone with no defence coaching experience to do the job at the highest level of the game.

 @Quacky...
Easy answer:
Stick is black

We have to have black people involved to keep black politicians happy.

Its f&cking up SA Rugby.

Its only a matter of time before we are boycotted again .
And this time, it will be against the atrocities placed on white people not black people.

...and I will be one of many black men supporting the boycott.

It's good to know that you're being reasonable in this circusntances and that skin color doesn't affect your views.

I am white and I'm all in favour of sacking both white and black personnel...the only thing that I ask for a SA coach is to have experience and some past success.
But you're right, as long s there are politics involved, people will never be picked out of pure merit, but sadly on skin color to "compensate" those bad times in the past. It's a hugely delicate matter, despite all the love and peace messages spread, the country is still very much wounded.

I don't know how to phrase it: it's like if racism is no longer a "thing", but strangely you can still feel it crawling over the years...

Rugby has always been a politics thing in SA. Way too late to complaint about that.

As to being wounded, excellent men inflict wounds they cant heal. Their best proposition usually is that the wounded will end by self healing.

The problem is larger than defending: it is all the SA professional XV rugby that is no longer adequate and sustainable (if it were in the first place)

Everyone should be sacked and the rugby professional activity aborted.

 @quacky
Brother, i honestly could care if our coach was Chindian!
As long as he is there on merit.

Black folk have had enough time to educate and enroll themselves in modern education, but we are so obsessed with our past, that it is grossly effecting our future.

We need a revolutionary , a new Madiba, someone that think, do and act in such a way that it brings people out of their past and into the now!

Only by doing that will racial, quota and non sensical political jabbering come to an end.

Brothers need to educate their dumb brains... they need to walk before they can run!

Does experience really make a difference?
Look at all the experience Coetzee's amassed over the years. He's as foolish as any noob ... perhaps even more so ... as logic and commonsense have no place in anything he does.
Why select Louw when you have Kriel or Brussouw?
Why select De Jongh when you have Janse van Rensburg and Venter?
Why select select Morne when you have Lambie?
Experience is totally over rated. It's just an excuse to prolong the careers of the tired and the useless.
They fired the wrong man. Seems they're determined to hang onto this incompetent quota coach no matter what.

There is always more to a story.  When one starts digging you will find some very interesting facts.  Chean Roux is even worse than a quota player - he simply got "pushed" and here is how and why!  Jurie Roux is one of the core problems in SARU.

The one piece of “news” that came out of the deliberations of the SA Rugby Union (Saru) around their embattled CEO, Jurie Roux, was widely accepted as a sop to the prying press.

Roux, it was said (in a story broken by Rapport’s Hendrik Cronje and also carried in City Press a week ago) had been “punished” by being removed from his lead role in the process to pick a new Springbok coach.

Instead of Roux sifting through the candidates and putting forward to the high-performance committee the names of those, in his opinion, who were best qualified, he was allegedly removed from the body.

Most accepted this as a lame gesture by the executive that they were doing something about “Juriegate.”

However, in my cynical mind, I wondered whether there was perhaps a deeper reason. Could it have been a pointer that Saru’s executive were concerned about some incidents under Roux’s stewardship? Were they perhaps removing him from a position in which some irregularities had occurred? My mind went back to one of those calls we journos often receive.

A “contact” called to give me a tip-off, but typically could not provide any verification of his allegations or allow himself to be identified.

It was in 2013, just after the Maties rugby club’s former coach Chean Roux had, from left field, been elevated into Heyneke Meyer’s Springbok coaching group as the performance analyst. His appointment (as far as I could ascertain, he is no relation of Jurie Roux) was unexpected, and my caller put an intriguing spin on it.

“You know why Heyneke gave Chean a job?” he enquired. Naturally, I was interested.

“It was a trade-off. Heyneke desperately wanted to get Fourie du Preez back from Japan, but Du Preez is very expensive – especially the insurance Saru would have to pay to [his club] Suntory Sungoliath.

“So Jurie cut a deal with Heyneke. ‘I’ll give you Fourie if you give me Chean.’”

It seemed too far-fetched to follow up, but my curiosity was again pricked later that year when something else most odd occurred. Two players, Lourens Adriaanse and Louis Schreuder, were out of the blue selected to go on the Springboks’ northern hemisphere tour.

Both had Maties connections and, again, there was the intimation that Jurie Roux might have influenced their selections – especially when it emerged they were both on the books of one Chris de Beer – Roux’s successor as chairperson of the Stellenbosch Rugby Club.

De Beer worked with, and after, Roux as a financial officer at the university and was implicated in the financial improprieties that allegedly occurred.

These are oddities, and it is strange that Saru has not demanded they be investigated.

Did Jurie get his friend Chean a well-paid job? Did he cause players to be picked in the Springbok team?

Surely answers are required.

Equally, what about the serious allegations made by Graeme Joffe against Saru vice-president Mark Alexander? Joffe claimed Alexander had been favoured with payments to benefit a leading marketing company that does business with Saru.

Alexander, as far as I know, has not taken legal action against Joffe – so Joffe might be right. But Saru seems unconcerned about a possible blot on the name of one of their top officials.

Why did president Oregan Hoskins come out in support of Roux’s reappointment for a period of five years when he was aware of the allegations against the latter contained in audit firm KPMG’s damning report? Is that not also something questions should be asked about?

Was an exit interview done with Meyer when he left? We know Saru failed to even speak to Jake White and Peter de Villiers, but surely there must be some key things Saru would want to know from Meyer?

Was Jurie Roux, when he was at Stellenbosch, no more than some sort of corporate Robin Hood who diverted funds to the financially struggling rugby club to keep Maties as strong as they were in the past?

If he had, is that not a flaw in his perception of corporate governance that Saru should be investigating?

It is no good for the administrators of rugby to cower behind their impenetrable PR wall and provide no answers, because the questions will not go away.

I dont know how Jourie is still in the position. He is benefiting from the ANC rule where stealing in encouraged.
He looks like a Corporate wimp- a stuffed jacket.

Quinn is useless- and was a passenger in Meyers squad

Experience makes no difference says the half man. Well when somebody is replumbing your heart after eating all that fat and not exercising Carbuncle, you better your hope your surgeon has some experience. The stats show huge differences between hospitals and doctors, based on experience. Get real.

Mozart experience is a total meaningless term without performance as a merit determined basis.    Some people have 20 years experience and each year is a repeat of the previous year.   So he has effectively had 1 year experience - there was in such cases no dvelopment .   That is why experience without performance in any job is a huge liability.

Okay so experience is meaningless Tokkie.....veterans are just old buggers occupying places that youngsters should get. Chean Roux has little experience coaching defence, how did that work out for you? Tok only you could be so colosally stupid as to argue against experience on a thread about a man who has been fired because he wasnt seasoned enough for the job. Do try harder old chap, its not fun when you are so clueless.

I never said experience is meaningless - but I explained when experience is of value.   In sport experience ends up like Matfield did last year - a total liability.
Roux was a stupid selection as assistant coach in the first instance.

Taking things out of context once again.
Tell us, Faggot how all the experience that Coetzee's amassed over the years benefited the Boks a few weeks back against the All Blacks?
How about the experience of Louw, Habana, Beast and Strauss?
Tell us exactly how it helped us in our record thumping?
The floor's yours, Faggot! We're all ears!!

Weren't you going to explain to us all just how important experience is?
It doesn't have to be a lengthy piece ... a single paragraph will do just as well.
