Chicago Cubs take an epic World Series

In Hollywood style, the Chicago Cubs just ended sport's longest losing streak of 108 years. And no doubt this will be a movie, in which Bill Murray can play himself in the stands. Firstly it was an epic series with the Cubs down and almost out having to win the last three games, two away at Cleveland. Getting this to a final game was already an accomplishment.....but three in a row, last two away still seemed impossible. Cleveland was ready with all their best pitchers fully rested. Chicago built early leads based on home runs by unlikely characters, Baez who seemingly could hit nothing and Ross at 39 another geriatric who wont quit. But Cleveland came back on some mishaps and a missed strike out by the ump. Finally with the Cubs ahead 6 to 3 in came Chapman to close things out.....what could be better, less than two innings to pitch and the fastest pitcher in the history of baseball hurling thunderbolts at 165 ks. Only he left a few in the hitting zone and things are tied at 6 apiece. And so on to the 10th, but rain intervenes which takes Chapman out of contention and the tension builds in the interim. Some great professional batting by Zobrist the MVP saw the Cubs up by 2.....would it be enough? Seemingly so as the next Cub's pitcher struck out the first two Batters. But then walked another and yielded a run.. Onto yet another pitcher with the challenge of getting one out to end the biggest hard luck story in sports which he did with cool professionalism. And so ended the curse of the goat,108 years of unsuccesful endeavour and hundreds of now out of date Cubs' jokes.To even a casual baseball observer, this was high drama.....the kind of contest that makes sport such compelling theatre. Go Cubs!

Thanks DA one of those rare things in sports ....now being called the best baseball game ever. Perhaps a little over the top, but who cares!

It's bad enough when Dense posts his laughably ignorant cricket posts on the Rugby section of these boards when there's a section clearly marked "Other Sports" . . . but now we have to read about some silly rounders tournament?

Moffie, I know you're a repulsive and manipulative liar but (as I've pointed out twice already) the comments I made about weed were on a rugby-related thread about drugs in rugby. I realise you and your Gimps are doing everything you can to take those comments out of context and pretend it was some kind of "confession" or something but that's because you're childish and deceitful little crybabies obsessed with me and everything I say or do on this board.

Watched a little major league baseball a while back, if anyone out there thinks test cricket is slow, try watching baseball. It takes slow to a whole new level! There is an unbelievable amount of fannying about! I guess it adds to the excitement when something finally does happen, but damn it can get frustrating!  

Bluebok, as with all the stupid Yank sports, they have to slow it down and interrupt the game hundreds of times so they can ram more TV ads down the throats of the fat, sweaty, hot-dog-guzzling Yanks.

Actually Bloo its easy to pour scorn on sports one doesn't follow. The ignorance about cricket over here is quite silly,and there is little willingness to learn. One wants to avoid that kind of verkrampte thinking. Baseball does have a lot of down time, but a baseball game is over in 4 hours.....all the action is relevant. It's a nervy game where one swing of the bat can turn a game. And contrary to the views of many cricket fans, pitching is an incredibly skilled activity with great control of swerve and dip. I have come to respect the game, if not love it like I do cricket.

Best baseball game I've ever seen, best World Series too. 
Can't beat the drama of playoff baseball.
Was at Wrigley a couple months ago for the first time ever. What a fantastic stadium and atmosphere. Very glad for the Cubbies.

Like I stated .....only american teams.
Most if not all the players in the team u mentioned are Yanks.

I watch very little in season Matey, but the playoffs are compelling. The same is true for hockey, which has a long playoff season. It's something which wont work in rugby because of the physical wear.....but could be a great format for one day cricket. I'm not expecting to be better entertained in a hurry, than I was last night. Glad you also enjoyed it Matey.

 I've always believed that to like and appreciate any sport one has to grow up with it hence the reason I neither like or dislike American sports. For the very same reason I can understand why they don't have an appetite for rugby or cricket as we do in the SH and  it's for that reason I will not comment on traditional American sports. There is no such thing as an inferior sport so good on them for enjoying their own sports.

 Lots of truth to that denny, although if you are deprived of your childhood sports as were in the States until the internet, one learns to make do with games that are played on foreign fields.

 The entire game can be condensed into half an hour and thats being generous .Still I thought that the weight of 108 yeas might well intrude into the pitchers mind and become self fulfilling.Man those yanks love them some slow arsed games eh ? Even their football is 10 minutes of something and 3 hours of yawn.

 Each to his own. Much as I think League is one big bore there are thousands who love it...it is what it is and in no way an inferior sport.

Dense, first off, the tone of this post suggests it's aimed at me but you also address someone called "matey" . . . which could mean Oimatey as he has appeared on this thread after quite a long absence from the board.

If it is indeed me that you are aiming this whine at, please point out which of my comments on this thread you interpreted as slagging off your family? We both know you're a gutless and low-class jellyfish who hasn't the manners or courtesy (or courage) to answer direct questions but I really would like to know what set you off again and got you blubbering about apparent slurs against your family.

Secondly (again, assuming it is me you were addressing this to), I am not your "matey". If you mean a "mate" as in a friend, I despise you and your Gollum-like grovelling and I think you are an ill-bred low-life . . . so I very much doubt we'd ever be mates.

If you mean "mate" in the other sense, well, I don't swing that way and if I did and I was unfortunate enough to be your "mate", I'd probably be sporting a thick lip or a black eye.

Hey, those look like really heartfelt celebrations and even if Yank sports leave me a bit cold I can appreciate the passion of the fans in that video not to mention the players at the moment when they won. Well done to the Chicago Cubs!
