Nanai-Williams is an ace up the sleeve for the back-to-back Super Rugby champions - an X-factor player who can conjure a try out of very little.
That was again illustrated when he danced through from first receiver to confound the Lions defence at Waikato Stadium on Saturday night for the Chiefs' sixth and last try.
The Counties Manukau Steeler is regularly moved by the coaches from wing to fullback to centre.
On Saturday he started at fullback for the first time this season but later found himself back at centre in a new midfield combination alongside replacement and fellow Counties player Bundee Aki when replacements were made.
"I moved around quite a bit but I'm just happy to play a part for the team in getting that W and if it means I have to play fullback, centre or wing, so be it," Nanai-Williams said after Saturday's match.
In fact, even when playing one position he has the green light from the coaches to put himself in the play in any way he wishes, including bobbing up at first receiver.
"Renns [Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie] and the other coaching staff just give me permission to be that second fullback - that guy that just runs around sniffing opportunities.
"It's pretty cool to get told to do that, to run around. Not many players get to roam around and I'm happy that they've given me the licence just to run around, see what's in front and just play and call it."
The secret is seeking out mis-matches against the big forwards who might not be quite as nimble on defence as the backs.
"You're just trying to get inbetween the big boys, getting them to come in and if they do then I've got guys outside who can penetrate the hole but if it's there then I can go through it.
"I was just quite lucky tonight that I squeezed through for one."
Nanai-Williams said the Chiefs players' confidence had taken a "bit of a belting" the previous week in the loss to the Brumbies in Canberra and Saturday night's 38-8 runaway victory had helped restore it before this Friday night's key New Zealand Conference derby against the Blues in New Plymouth.
"Tonight we just got back in touch with Chiefs rugby and we're happy with where we're at right now but we know we've got to stay humble and grounded.
"The Blues game is always a local derby for us. They're just up the road from us, although we're going to be playing them in Taranaki, and it's going to be awesome.

"They had a good win last night [Friday night] and we had a good win tonight [Saturday] so both teams are on a high and I guess we'll come back on Monday back to square one and start preparing for it."
It was easy for the players to motivate themselves for a match against the Blues and in fact any conference derby.
"You know who you are playing against, how they play and you always want to see how you against those boys," Nanai-Williams said.
