Patrick McKendry: Chiefs look to snare three big names

Sonny Bill Williams, Julian Savea, Jerome Kaino; the Chiefs aren't looking to build a squad for next year, they want to make a monster.

Of the three high-profile and high-impact players they are seeking, Dave Rennie will be most confident of signing Williams, but given the reputation the franchise is building as a successful and sound environment, the Chiefs coach will have good grounds to believe he can snare the lot as he seeks to win a third title on the trot.

Yesterday's Herald on Sunday revealed Williams' concerns at the punishment his body is taking as a marked man at the Roosters in the NRL could be the deciding factor to link with Rennie again after his success in Hamilton last year. League commentator Andrew Voss yesterday tweeted the 28-year-old former All Blacks midfielder will sign this week, suggesting the player's manager Khoder Nasser's flights are already booked.

Williams could link with his cousin Tim Nanai-Williams or Charlie Ngatai in the Chiefs midfield next season, a high-class replacement for the injury-prone Richard Kahui who has left for Japan.

All Blacks wing Savea and former All Blacks loose forward Jerome Kaino are less certain to join, but the Chiefs have as good a chance as any to secure their services for next season and beyond. The Crusaders are also in the hunt for Hurricane Savea but the Chiefs would have put an emphasis on the quality of coaching he would receive under Wayne Smith.

Having the blockbusting 23-year-old as an option inside Aaron Cruden - with the equally dangerous Williams outside the All Blacks No10 - would made any opposing team's defensive coach lose sleep.

The Blues are chasing Kaino hard too, with coach Sir John Kirwan talking to him on a recent trip to Japan. Kirwan said the meeting was a positive one, adding the 30-year-old, who played 48 tests, was a "real Blues man".

Certainly, it would be interesting to watch Kaino, who would probably play No8, operating in a loose forward trio including the promising blindside flanker Steven Luatua, but equally as exciting would be watching him play alongside Liam Messam and Sam Cane at the Chiefs. The Chiefs' helter-skelter type attack could suit Kaino now he has two years of the fast Japanese game under his belt.

Williams' signature will give the Chiefs the inside running on adding to their two titles next season, but the capture of Savea and Kaino too would make them unbackable favourites.

The attacking abilities of the first two, combined with the destructiveness on defence of the latter, would make an already excellent and well-coach outfit one capable of tearing any team apart.

If nothing else, it shows Rennie and Co aren't prepared simply wait for another title to come to them. They're showing ambition and that's a pre-requisite for franchises looking to build dynasties.

The Chiefs are my favourite kiwi team. Right from before the days of Sione Lauaki.

Reckon they'll be ruling the roost for awhile.

I don't think that would be a good thing for NZ rugby, except for Chiefs' fans who have to be more than delighted with these news (aren't you, justwin, wardad,...?). As the topic says, a moster would be created and it would be made from nothing, without being related with the base rugby. Waikato is now 6th in the ITM cup and the number of players provided to the franchise can be counted with the fingers of one hand (Messam, TKB, Lam, T. Smith and Tameifuna) plus another one plays with the Rebels. Facing these numbers, Auckland and Wellington provide around 15 players to Super Rugby franchises, the majority of them to the Blues and Canes respectively while Canterbury provides around 30.

But does the franchise have the money needed? creating this monster would require a lot of money. SBW, Savea and Kaino (if finally all of them play in NZ) will be btwin the best paid players if not the bests of all the NZ rugby.

I think (and maybe here I'm mixing up my wishes) that Kaino going to the Blues and Savea to the Saders  it's a more probable scenario and a more liked one also for the NZRU in terms of equalising the franchises (for sure a more liked one for blues or saders' fans). In this case the battle for the conference title btwin these 3 teams (sorry for the canes and landers fans, eh naru?) could be one of the hardest and closest in the last years
But who knows how it ends...

sure Savea staying at canes would make things more equal and I think he should stay.
But I read here (sasuke posted) that the Hurricanes offered a contract which put Savea out of the 10 best paid players in the team what make him look for another team. That's something really hard to understand, they not only lose their best player but also strengthen one of their rivals. As much if he goes to the Chiefs as to the saders both teams will be too strong, at least on the paper, for the canes next year. If I were responsible for the franchise, no doubt I offer him the best possible salary.

at first the money required made me question the legitimacy of the claims regarding the chiefs recrutiting savea, SBW and kaino, something just didint fit in that equation, unless kaino was going to get paid in magic beans.
but when u look at some of the players leaving the chiefs, especially kahui, masaga and clarke, im sure those three would have been amongst the highest paid chiefs this year and none of them had the extra cash that comes with being an All Black.

i dont know if its too bad a thing for NZ rugby, when u look at the roster of all the other teams, its not like they have been playing with chump change players, blues are a work in progress, highlanders had a bad injury run which shouldnt plague them in 2014 (key word being shouldnt) and the hurricanes just need to lose that shitty as plague of a coach before they can can start rebuilding.
so all in all, were still in a very solid position, its not a coincidence that NZ have had two teams in every spXV semifinals.

if i was a saders fan i would be worried about the chiefs dynasty which IMO we are in the middle of already. blackadder might have continued the crusaders impressive record of making the finals every year, but the reality is that record is only impressive if ur any team but the crusaders.
the way i see it is, pat lam and blackadder both started their super rugby head coaching careers at the same time and both have produced similar results, zero titles. its time for a change IMO and that change needs to begin with the removal of one of their favourite sons blackadder.

they still have 6 s luatua, 7 l braid, 8 p saili, 19 j kainoand thats a mean backrow trio right there, kaino would have given JK some flexible rotation options plus the the player from the bench would have been extra class.

kaino moving to the chiefs wouldnt be a bad move from both the teams and players point of view, matt van leven was impressive for the chiefs, but kaino could potentially give their backrow combo an even bigger boost up,,,

but something which IMO is even better then the chiefs for kaino would be to go to the crusaders,,,

that would automatically make the crusaders backrow the best in the bizz, plus kaino gets to submerge himself in one of the most professional environments outside of the All Blacks.
crusaders would also be very capable of implementing a strong rotation policy for the 2014 season, IMO they were the best at doing so this year.

a lot of good options for kaino really and im already back pedaling on comments i made regarding kaino having no chance of making the All Blacks again.

Yes, me too. Even during their lean years they were prepared to throw the ball around and play attractive rugby. I've supported the Chiefs as my NZ team for many years, going back to the days of Bruce Reihana, Roger Randle and co. I was also a big fan of Deon Muir, a very underrated and hard-working #8 who some of the Kiwis might not even remember.

Wardad, yes, there are definitely similarities between the Cheetahs and the Chiefs, both from their adventurous style of play and also, until recently, their lack of success.

The Chiefs look determined to build on their successes of the past two years and if they do manage to attract players of the calibre of SBW and Kaino then they could become as dominant as the Crusaders used to be. If that is the case then I'll probably start liking them a lot less!
