Chiefs turn on power to swamp Stormers

For 60 minutes the Chiefs looked to be all over the Stormers at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, but renewed energy from bench players resulted in two quick tries to the visitors before the home side scored two of their own to wrap up a 36-20 win.

Replacement loose forward Tevita Koloamatangi was strong in support of fellow loose forwards Liam Messam and match centurion Tanerau Latimer and when not held in the tackle it proved fatal for the Stormers as Koloamatangi scored, the match-winner and the bonus point try.

Out by 24-6, the Chiefs looked comfortable winners but a piece of individual brilliance from three-quarter Gio Aplon sparked a late run from the Stormers as they got within four points. However, the Chiefs unleashed their own bench to effect and they made it even more emphatic with a fifth try, to Latimer, to score from a rolling maul.

Chiefs new boys second five-eighths Tom Marshall, loose forward Liam Square and returning fullback Gareth Anscombe cut a merry chase as they ran the Stormers all around Waikato Stadium in the first half.

They were on the front lines of a Chiefs assault which made a mockery of the Stormers' defensive reputation and ruined their hopes of giving their captain centre Jean de Villiers a game to remember for his 100th appearance. The Stormers had little chance to impress under the waves of Chiefs attacks.

When they did get the ball they found the Chiefs had a defensive intensity of their own and it wasn't born out of the holding tactics that had been of so much concern to the Stormers earlier in the week.

It wasn't until the 62nd minute that the Stormers opened some cracks of their own when an orthodox backline movement resulted in Gio Aplon breaking inside wing Tim Nanai-Williams, fending off first five-eighths Aaron Cruden and racing in for a superb solo try.

Nizaam Carr drove over soon after as the Stormers got to 20-24 down before the Chiefs hit back.

The Stormers didn't help themselves in turnovers, none worse than the 55th minute when halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow sent a long kick downfield into space. As he attempted to recover the bouncing ball, wing Kobus van Wyk had the misfortune to kick the ball into the in-goal area resulting in a five-metre scrum.

Another instance saw replacement halfback Louis Schroeder take a mark and then lose the ball when attempting a quick kick. But the most frustrating would have been in the 71st minute at a five-metre lineout they took in the ball, set up a drive only to lose the ball to Retallick.

From the time when wing James Lowe had reward for some early dashes down the flank when he was on hand to cap off turnover ball when flanker Schalk Burger lost the ball.

Nanai-Williams was onto it in a flash. Marshall carried it on, and had the benefit of a flick of the ball off the back of his boot to get in the clear to Lowe who cross wide out for Cruden to add the conversion.

Looking to move the ball at every opportunity, the Chiefs opened up holes in the vaunted Stormers defences as Lowe, Anscombe, lock Brodie Retallick, Nanai-Williams and flanker Liam Messam all made effective breaks.

However, more running play, some of it ragged, after the half-time siren resulted in a piece of fortuitous play for Marshall again. His pass to Lowe, close to the line, was knocked back by a Stormers defender and after the Television Match Official was consulted the try was awarded to Marshall who had fallen on the ball over the line.

Hopes the Stormers may have had of getting back into the game quickly after the resumption were quelled before they had started. Speed onto the ball in attack saw Nanai-Williams create the space and his off-load was taken by Kerr-Barlow who scored beneath the posts.

im not worried about the stormers come back one bit, for starters its the stormers they are much ado about nothing as long as u have coetzee wasting all that stormers talent.

secondly, the only time the stormers look dangerous is when they have nothing to lose and are left with no choice but to chance their hand with ball in hand.
this has long been a problem that most saffa teams suffer from.

on the 62nd minute mark, the stormers had only scored 6pts, while the chiefs had 24pts on the board.
like a wounded animal, the stormers realised they had absolutely nothing to lose, and only then did they lose their boring no attacking rugby inhibitions, but what the stormers never seem to learn is, by then it was too late.

if the stormers had the ability to back themselves and show a little variety in their one dimensional boring snooze fest of a game, they would be a much better force, but that is something they have never ever ever been able to do, especially with coetzee as their coach.

absolutely correct mr ceradyne, and every kiwi pointed out during and after the match just how kak the blues were.

unlike some of ur countrymen/stormers fans today though, we didnt make excuses for the blues abysmal showing, and neither did we take offense when our saffa brothers shoved it in our face.,

 Stormers were outplayed and kicked possession away like they normally do.
They have the talent (some oldies) but desperately need a change in management.

 Sasuzi, you will not find me making excuses. Maybe because I am not a Stormers supporter. Or maybe you I should qualify that. I am not like a large number of Stormers supporters.

Having said that, if I was a Stormers supporter I would have taken offence of the title of this thread. It smacks of arrogance and trolling.

Chiefs have won this thing two years running. The Stormers are becoming average with everyday that passes. Don't see this as such a surprise.

For their second travel game in New Zealand I thought the Stormers did fairly well. The two late tries tell me their tired, don't have a lot of depth, and are just plain average. Add that to the Chiefs - who are arguably the best team in the league - who do have very good depth and aren't tired, and you get a fairly good game until the end.

Chiefs are good, their great!! BUT

The Chiefs now have to go out on the road to face the daunting task -LOL - of playing the Force, Cheetahs, and Bulls. WOW!!!  You would think the BEST team in the league would have to have it just a little harder then that, no?

Also, If they finish top 2 again and get another bye, plus the home playoff game, at the end of the season they will not have left New Zealand for TWO months when they play that playoff game. They play in Australia on April 25th. After that they never leave New Zealand. I don't care who you cheer for, that scheduling helps.

but my primary purpose here isnt to stir, thats just what i do here on the side cos the fishing spots at sarugby are so good.
