Chiefs set for triple boost ahead of Highlanders

Richard Kahui could return this weekend against the Highlanders

New Zealand Super Rugby conference leaders the Chiefs are set to be given a triple boost by the return of three key players.

Centre Richard Kahui, halfback Brendon Leonard and fullback Robbie Robinson all missed the Chiefs trip to South Africa but have been training hard and will be considered for selection this weekend.

Chiefs assistant coach Wayne Smith says that all three players who have yet to feature this season would all be considered for selection in this weekend's Round 6 match at the Waikato Stadium.

The Chiefs play the Highlanders this weekend and what could count in the trio's favour is that the rest of the team only returned from South Africa on Sunday and had Monday off before the match on Friday.

"We've got some fresh players who didn't come (to South Africa) who have been training their butts off in Hamilton," Smith told APNZ.

"There's a huge competition for selection now, I don't think too many people have really claimed their position yet."

Smith said that the Chiefs coaches had seen training footage of former All Black pair Kahui (shoulder) and Leonard (cheekbone), as well as rising force Robinson (foot and groin) while they were in South Africa.

"We've got a fair idea of how they've been going ... and they're looking pretty good."

Smith added that Chiefs co-captain Liam Messam who was left with a swollen ankle after his 100th match for the Chiefs against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth was looking good.

"I saw him today and he looks good," said Smith.

"He's got no limp or anything. I think he'll be 100 per cent."

Smith said that the Chiefs work at the breakdown wasn't good enough, but said the issues went beyond that.

"There are further concerns, probably. Our physicality one on one - we're a wee bit high both on attack and defence. Our cleanouts are a bit like our defence, we're okay but not exceptional. We've got to address that.

"There is a tendency for the guys to infringe at the breakdown, rather than just back our defence, for example. "

"That's a concern, that's a mindset-attitude thing and we've got to make changes otherwise we're not going to win. It's critical. The main thing is entry (to the breakdown), getting entry legally and keeping your hands off the ball.

"They are pretty simple things."

When asked about the Chiefs short turnaround between the Kings and the Highlanders Smith said that they had faced similar travel challenges before and succeeded.

"We did it last year against the Hurricanes ... and the guys really fronted (in a 33-14 win) so we've just got to make sure we do all the physical things well but we get the attitude and mindset right.

"As coaches we've got to make sure we keep it simple for the players and just front up mentally and physically on Friday."

robinson, kahui & leonard are all back for the chiefs too & will be in contention for selection against the highlanders.

thats some pretty sick depth, best in the comp IMO.

rennies got some serious selection headaches. i think its important he has a core base team, something that dosent change from the team at the moment.

i mean robinson was solid for the chiefs last year, but anscombe has been the buy of the year. williams has been really good in the midfield & masaga is close to his best.

maybe move williams out the wing and replace tikorotuma who has been very quiet by his standards??? or even bump horrel to the bench, with kahui at 12, something i wouldnt mind seeing, but kahuis gone at the end of the season, so there is little value moving kahui anywhere except 13/wing where he will be solid as usual.

my top cheifs team with current available players,,,
1 t smith, 2 h elliot, 3 b afeaki, 4 c clarke (c) 5 b retallick, 6 t latimer, 7 s cane, 8 l messam, 9 t kerr barlow, 10 a cruden, 11 t nani williams, 12 a horrel, 13 r kahui, 14 l masaga, 15 g anscombe
16 r marshall, 17 b taumafuina, 18 m fitzgerald, 19 f lee, 20 b leonard, 21 r robinson, 22 a tikorotuma

Hi Sasuke, that is some pretty amazing depth there! Do you think there's a chance Robinson might replace Anscombe at fullback?

By the way, did you notice that the Lightbringers gave the Uzumaki Clan a good solid smack over the weekend and joined them at the top of the Foxsports head-to-head table? First decent week I've had in the Foxsports FR comp (thanks mainly to Hika Elliott and Conrad Smith) although my testrugby team still sucks!

Sasue

Just one question about the Chiefs - when did they get back to New Zealand?   I hope it was before Tuesday since if they did not get back by Monday the effectts of jet lag could get at them.   After all the write ups about jet lag I googled it and the indications are that it is very bad when travelling from west to east and the effects are normally lasting six days when the difference is 12 hours as was the case with the Cheetahs and even the Sharks last year.  The Chiefs can run out of steam in the second half as a result of it and it bothers me a bit.  From East to west the effects are not so bad ad can wear off in two or three days.

The above issue of jet lag seems to have a serious impact - especially in the second half of games - when players seems to run out of steam.   I hope the Chiefs beat the Highlanders - the latter team is pathetic - but still think there  may be a slight problem.  Hope I am wrong though.

@rooinek,

LMAO, i did see u lay the smack down on me in the head to head. i normally dont check the head to heads cos it has such little numbers, but when looking at the regular ladder, i saw ur earned more points then me, so i clicked into the head to head link hoping i wasnt up against u, :o(

but congrats on the win for the round, it looks like u and i will bataling it out cos the other two are neglecting their teams big time, good news for us for the nexty two rounds aye??? lolz, :oP

as for robinson over anscombe, considering the chiefs a re returning fromSA, it wouldnt be the dumbest move start robinson over anscome giving anscombe a rest, same goes with nani williams and kahui. but for the greater chiefs picture, IMO anscombe is the well deserved incumbent and robinson has to make the most of every opportunity he gets to win it back.
highlanders look rocked on the bottom of the ladder and rumor has it theyre suffering even bigger injury worries this week with gear under an injury cloud, that might make rennie seriously consider rsting a few more of his boys.

not doing as well as i would like in the testrugby, the sleeping giants & the No1 team cant remember the name are really kicking some serious butt.

ive got the superbru woodenspoon at the moment, but i did win the yellow cap last week, so im hoping for more of those. my goal is to crack the top 6 by seasons end, or for now, not to come last, LMAO, :oP

@mikey,

im not too sure when the chiefs left, but i would imagine they would have left ASAP, especiallly with oscar out on bail,,,,,,too soon??? o_O

chiefs in 2012 were on a roll after the SA tour where they won 3 of their 4 matches before heading into the june test series.
they did lose their last two games of the season to the hurricanes & crusaders, but those matches were on the edge of ur seat type of matches.
i remember a few miutes left on the clock, SBW greedily holding onto the ball with 2 players unmarked on his right 10 mtrs from the line, he was tackled and the crusaders eventually won the game by 7pts.
and the loss to the hurricanes was thanks to a last minute try, but a very close encounter similar to their match against the stormers.

it wasnt so much them running out of steam, but more a couple of 50/50 games that didnt go their way and those losses IMO didnt have anything to do with the chiefs travelling back from SA.

jet lag is always an issue in the spXV, but im sure if we look up all teams that have travelled to and from SA, the stronger teams would always have won the majority of any realted matches, as the stormers in 2010 and crusaders in 2011 proved.

You have to love this comment:

"There is a tendency for the guys to infringe at the breakdown, rather than just back our defence, for example. "

"That's a concern, that's a mindset-attitude thing and we've got to make changes otherwise we're not going to win. It's critical. The main thing is entry (to the breakdown), getting entry legally and keeping your hands off the ball.

Please add in holding onto jerseys etc as other examples.

Refs please dont tolerate these wee chiefies and their illegal tactics.

Yes indeed the coach has reason to be concerned. How well can the chiefies compete when playing legally is a question. They are bound to be pinged as their cover has been blown here in SA. To think some nz oaks squealed about our refs. Man they were too lenient if anything.

saSUE thanks for an interesting posts that only confirmed what  I and others witnessed.

Mike the fatigue of the wee chiefies will probably be match by the old guys in the highlanders side?
