Chiefs sign Highlanders prop Jamie Mackintosh

Jamie Mackintosh will play Super Rugby for the Chiefs next season


Current Super Rugby champions the Chiefs have signed former Highlanders captain and loosehead prop Jamie Mackintosh for two years.

 

Mackintosh has struggled for selection at the Highlanders since the arrival of All Black prop Tony Woodcock.

 

Chiefs' coach Dave Rennie said, "Jamie is a crucial signing for us. He is a bloody good man and we are rapt to have him.

 

"Jamie is an experienced player and a strong leader. We know he will be a major contributor both on and off the field and we are looking forward to working with him."

 

Mackintosh is excited by his new challenge. "My whole life I have been a real Southern man and to have the opportunity to work with a new group of guys, experience a new piece of New Zealand and learn about its people is very exciting.

 

"Loyalty is one of my strongest values, so it was a tough decision to leave a franchise that I have always called home."

 

"I would like to thank the Highlanders for being a huge part of my life and I will always be very proud to have played for and captained them " it was always a dream of mine growing up.

 

"In order for me to grow as a player I feel the time is right for me to have a change and I would like thank the Chiefs for showing faith in me and giving me this opportunity."

 

The 1.93m, 130kg prop will move to Hamilton at the end of the year after his ITM Cup campaign with the Southland Stags.

 

The Southland captain has played 92 matches for the Southland Stags, 67 for the Highlanders and one test for the All Blacks.

what a huge signing for the chiefs, whoppas going to add a lot of value to an already strong chiefs outfit. his signing ir particularly good because loosehead prop is the one area where i thought the chiefs could do better, toby smith is strong but too fudging stupid for this level, he would fit right in at the stormers or bulls though, LMAO (jokes, -_o) and paluisi manu is just a band aid prop, chiefs can do better and they have. when the highlanders signed up woody i thought that would make a huge difference and i was dead wrong, if anything the highlanders upfront went back a peg or two. i still rate woody and dont mind seeing him in the All Blacks for the moment, but i realise he needs to be phased out between now and next year, but his efforts at the highlanders havent been his usual self, definately not helped by the injuries hes suffered, but while hes a better All Black and prop then whoppa, whoppa is a better highlander and one who has a very good understanding about the highlanders dynamics. wish u all the best with the chiefs whoppa and i hope im in southland to see u get ur 100th game, southland bloody legend, :o)

Sasue I am not enthusiastic about this signing. Matter of fact this bloke is big in size - weak as a scrummer. There are about 20 looseheads in SA that would have been better signings than Mackintosh.

@mikey,

i agree his scrummagining is whoppas weakest part of his game, rpob not a good thing for a prop lolz, but if rugby was about 80minutes of scrums, only then would it be a problem hence his signing by the chiefs a master stroke.
whoppa is prob one of the the best front row ball carriers in the comp after coonie of course, but unlike coonie his workarate on defence is right up there last year averaging 15 tackles per game, thats on par with loosies.

if rumours about scrum guru mike cron (All Blacks scrum coach) are true, then the chiefs look to have locked up his services for 2014 making the scrummaging issues of whoppa even less so. while i agree his scrummaging is weak, its still acceptable for spXV level and ive definately seen worse.

if the chiefs lure SBW for 2014, then i will finally agree with the chief peeps here that the rugby powerbase in NZ has shifted to waikato.

Sasuke, with or without Sonny Bill, it's hard to argue that the rugby powerbase in NZ has already shifted to Waikato.

 

Coenie may not put in as many tackles as some other props out there, but the quality of some of his crunching hits makes up for that.

That sounds a bit like yourself redneck. You dont put in as many posts as some of the others and sadly, when you do, the quality is also kak. You would think, like Coenie, because you dont do it often, you would make a statement when you do.

 

Unfortunately its just the opposite. You just reconfirm why every parent pushes their kid so hard at school to aspire to be something. Its every parents nightmare to have their kid still at home at 50+ with no people skills or ambition.

@rooy, u maybe right there and i might be advocating the crusaders cause based on their past glory, but 4 years is a long time between titles. what the crusaders have done though is made a finals appearance for 11 straight years, 12 when they play in the finals this year. that level of consistency is why i still think the powerbase is with them, but the chiefs roster and especially staff have all the ingredients that made the crusaders as strong as they are. regarding coonie tnough, i wasnt inferring that his defence isnt all that, even though thats how it reads, like u said he is a power hitter and gets through a ton of work more often then not. IMO hes the best prop in the comp.
