He was playing well for the Sharks this year, and now doing well for the Boks again.
I thought he was a spent force with an injured neck, but the extra time off has perhaps helped in the rehab.

He's never been anything special ... and he never will be.

He's a poor loosehead prop and an even worse tighthead.

Have we joned the rest of the country in celebrating mediocity?

If Malherbe and Coenie are solid in the scrums, we have to look for a common factor. The opposition?

 Mozart
The scrums was a mess and the player to be blamed is  Mtawarira.  The scrums will improve vastly if Kisthof starts and for BEE purposes he be retained on the bench.

Yes, exactly Mozart.

Well put.

Beast too should not be there.

How we managed with these two poor props starting is beyond me.

Coenie is by some distance our best prop in open play.

If you look at how the importance of a prop at scrum time has diminished over time with all the resets and guesswork by the refs then Coenie's alleged vulnerability in the set pieces is offset by his ball-carrying and tackling in general play.

Same applies to Beast.

Beast/Marx/Coenie is a world-class front row.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!

Yeah right!!!

Coenie's inability to keep his back straight within the set piece is enough for penalty after penalty. He not only hinges but scrums inward when pressured. Sacrificing the set piece for a little tightloose action is just plain stupid.

Beast is as big a weed on the other side. He was demolished this weekend ... again. It's a regular occurance these days.

Time to set the useless and the old aside.

Pffffffffffffffffhaaaaaaahahahahahaaaa!!

"World-class front row" my eye!!!

Ask the Aussies if a prop who is good in open play offsets a vulnerability at tighthead scrumming.

Since when have props been selected for "best in open play".....and since when has the "importance of a prop diminished at scrum time"
It sounds like there's a blithering idiot on here who is just too stupid to understand that props are selected first and formost for their ability to scrum and not for the ability to run like a wing.
Then to cap things off by admitting Coenie's vulnerability at scrum time but in the same breath saying he's part of a world class front row is hilarious. Fool, it's plain stupid to think of a prop who can't scrum as world class.

The funny thing is this moron was watching the Lions/Chiefs game where the commentators made a point of how the Lions use the scrum to force penalties. But then again he was the noob who thought Deon Carstens was a great prop.

I agree with Rooineck,As long as Coen can catch the ball sailing through our polls after conceding penalty after penalty because of his belly flopping at scrum time. World class Prop my ass.Rooi, I generally enjoy your aggressive humour, but your statement regarding a Props roll is fecking stupid bro!

Scrum penalties are the graveyard of any team, besides the prop becoming a penalty machine it kills the momentum of the team. We had a living example just last night of the price the Chiefs paid at scrum time.Commonsense tells you to win the ball first so as to do any running.

I think there is too much emphasis on scrum dominance. I agree that a prop can't give away penalties repeatedly, but if he can just keep it steady on his side of the scrum, then its job done in my opinion. The AB scrum often goes backwards, but they get the ball out and into the back line so fast the scrum performance is irrelevant. As I have noted many times, by the time the opposing scrum is done slapping one another on the arse for their great scrum performance against the AB's, their backs are defending for their lives.

Yes ... everything is won upfront and the set piece is key. It lays the foundation for everything that follows.

I never figured Redneck to be so ignorant. It's all making sense now. Notshe ... Deysel!!

What's next? Big burly prop type locks to go with the front row in the tight-loose exchanges? Hell ... while we're at it, lets teach a prop type to play at 9. He may not have the necessary skills required for the position but at least he'll be great in the loose.

What a joke!!

"Rooi, I generally enjoy your aggressive humour, but your statement regarding a Props roll is fecking stupid bro!"

A prop's "roll"? I'm not talking about Trevor Nyakane here!

LMAO! And I'm the stupid one?

Listen MonsterBok, the real point here is that all props are fair game for the ref's guesswork. The number of resets in rugby is actually spoiling the game and whenever a scrum collapses for the second time the ref is taking a thumbsuck and awarding a free kick or a penalty on a total guess. With this situation, Coenie has as much chance of being penalized as Owen Franks . . . it seems to depend on what decision creates the least controversy so the ref generally favours the side putting the ball into the scrum.

Nowhere am I saying Coenie is a great scrummager, just saying that scrumming is (sadly) not as important as it used to be because far less scrums are actually completed. Now, taking that into consideration, I'm saying rather pick the prop who offers more in general play . . . and if you think Coenie's only "roll" (sic) is to catch the ball sailing through the "polls" and you can't see what he offers in general play then . . . well . . . I won't say it . . . but I think you know what I'm implying!

It's nice you picked up the "roll". Please don't compare Coen to Franks.Scrummaging is the most important "roll" of a Prop, NOT the only!!If you are not a great scrummager youre not a world class prop.
Coen is not the only bellyflopper around but he is NOT a world class prop.

What happened to Vincent Koch or Wilco Louw. They are by far our better props. Malherbe is not even in the same league. Then we have burger muncher Trevor Nkyane that believes getting fat over gym work will sort his rugby out.
I think that we have some excellent props with the likes of Redelinghyus, bit small but solid technique. You never see him running all over the field for the Lions but he gets stuck and gives them a solid platform.
I think the front row that we should invest in are
Thomas the tank Du Toit, Malcolm Marx, Wilco LouwEtzebeth, Du ToitKolis, Whitely, Du Preez
Reservers would be
Redelinghuys, Ox Nche, Koch, KitshoffBongi Vermeulen,

There's no guessing needed when Coenie's lying flat on his belly. There's no guessing needed when he's the only one with his back bent at 90 degrees ... or the only one scrumming inward with his butt sticking out at a 45 degree angle.

He doesn't have the technique nor the strength to be a "world class prop" ... and his contribution to collapsed scrums and penalties isn't worth the few times he runs over smaller players in the loose.

His best position is left back ... in the change room that is.

The scrum set piece needs to be solid. It sets many platforms to play off of when dominant ... you should know this ... in other words it's still a vital part of rugby. Stupid to think otherwise.

There is no camparison between Coenie and Franks. The one's a "world class" prop ... the other is a chump ... see the difference?

It defies logic when you classify a player as "world class" and in the same breath saying "he is not a great scrummager." .....meaning the said player failed to do what he was selected to do.
