What a farce!

Rolland's words to Gethin Jenkins and Frans Malherbe were effectively: "If it goes down again on your side then you'll both be off and we'll bring on two new props".

So then Malherbe is subbed and the Springboks bring on Coenie Oosthuizen, a "new" prop and in a truly ridiculous situation, Rolland sends Coenie off, shortly after he threatened to resolve the situation by bringing on "new" props.

It got even sillier after that. "Have you got another prop?" Rolland asks the Springboks. "Yes," says Jean de Villiers, ". . . the same guy you sent off!".

As it turns out, the Springboks did actually have Gurthro to come but it wasn't necessary because Rolland's stupid decision to give both props a final warning meant that the Welsh had run out of props and we were reduced to uncontested scrums all because the ref didn't have a clue how to manage the collapsing scrums.

I'm not only blaming Rolland . . . this is an ongoing problem where the refs allow one reset and then, when the scrum collapses again, they have a quick thumbsuck and penalize the team less likely to cause controversy . . . but his earlier decision to threaten both props with yellow cards was short-sighted and led to one of the most ridiculous yellow cards I've ever seen.

The Springbok missed tackles in the first 10 minutes were downright embarrassing but they did get their defence sorted out to some extent after that and I'm afraid to say, a lot of that was due to Morne Steyn going off because at one point he had about as many missed tackles as minutes played.

Unfortunately, I think this game is going to be remembered for poor refereeing decisions rather than the quality of the rugby . . . but well done Bokke!

Morne was terrible in defense and Rolland hada complete brain fart when he sent Coenie off, Oosthuizen laughed it off mind.

I think the problem started with Jenkins - with all due respect.   He was under pressure from the first scrum and the easy way for him was to go down.   The problem was not on the Springbok side - I think it was more on the side of Wales.

The curious question remains - why did the scrum on that side went down when Malherbe was on and went down again when Coenie came on?  The common denominator in both cases on the Welsh side was Jenkins - so I believe he was in fact to blame for the problem that aro se.

it was farce but connie could see the funny side of it.

i wonder if meyer would have benched connie had he known that roilland would have kept the smae train of thought even with a new prop??? IMO he would have just left him on.

also given the fact that Boks made an effort to change to situation by benching malherbe, roillands decision to let connie and the Boks still be held accountable was plain wrong.
it could have been all the welsh loose heads fault.

referees need to learn to back themselves and apply discretion in some scenarios, but despite an average performance by the ref, the right outcome was reached.

IMO rugby needs to adopt soccers extra time where extra time is awarded for injury stoppages etc. if it eats up 5 mins then apply 5 mins extra time.
in rugby, is scrum restes eats up 17 minutes, then give an extra 17 mins of game time.
i dont mind watching scrums, even if they take a couple to get it right, but i do hate watching it start over and over again, so i can understand roillands frustration even if i think he handled it completely wrong.

Maybe rugby needs to have a specialist scrum referee on the pitch on the other side to monitor scrum engagements. It is so difficult to be objective who is actually the offender at scrums.

It is very difficult to monitor scrums - but I think as a general rule it can be accepted that it is quite possible to determine which of the props are the weaker on the field of play - that should become clear after the first three or so scrums.   The weaker prop combination would be the ones that would cause most problems.   Once that  has been determined it is quite easy to determine responsibility for illegal scrumming and the refs can than determine who is the most likely culprit.
