It's sad to think the Boks have ignored this chap. Just as solid as Joubert and better than Willie at kicking, pace, passing and hitting gaps. More powerful defender too.

Tough to think of many backs in the present Boks that rival this guy. Being the complete ballplayer that he is, lends well to any type of gameplan. Unless you argue from a leadership role perspective, Combrink's selection over Steyn is a no-brainer too.

No problem with Willemse either, but the guy hasn't properly proven himself at SR level. Combrink has. He's battle-hardened and still young and has a way better record.

Plenty of reasons why he should be there and the reasons not to....very lacking.

Gutted for the guy.

Gutted as well......everyone knows why he didn't make the squad and it has nothing to do with ability......shame!

Sure Combrinck's colour counts against him - especially in his position - and he's a decent enough player but seriously, who would have selected Combrinck ahead of Makazole Mapimpi, Cheslin Kolbe or Sbu Nkosi?
Not me.
PS Unless of course you're punting him for fullback in which case I'd select him ahead of Wille le Roux in a heartbeat . . . but not sure I'd pick him as a fullback ahead of Kolbe, Willemse or even Curwin Bosch.

He'd be my fullback ahead of Willie, Willemse or Bosch. Where he drops in speed he makes up for it in mental attitude and maturity. You just never know what effect the big stage has on these kids.

Combrink featured very little this year. Good player in fact a damn good player There are a number of players that could have added value to the squad none more so than Jan Serfontein Others include Wilco Louw, Pierre Schoeman, Joseph Dweba, Aker vd Merwe, Jaco Kriel, Jacques du Plessis, Dan du Preez, JL du Preez, Marcel Coetzee, Rohan Janse v Rensburg, Esterhuizen and Duhan vd Merwe Not to forget druggie Dyanti

Oh no......Combrink again. Next we'll hear about Vorster. Combrink is a slow chappie who has a decent left boot and nothing much else. You have to love the logic that he was left out because he is white, when the incumbent fullback is white. How stupid is Peeper really?

Why does everyone think Combrink is slow?

He's faster than Gallant, Willie, Am, DDA and Pollard. He has a bigger boot than Pollard and a better off-loader than maybe everyone outside of Willemse and Nkosi.

And he's almost mistake-free. I don't know his stats but he must have one of the lowest error rates of any of the backline players currently in contention or in the actual team.

We hear posters so often say certain players are slow and it’s a load of crap Moz told us Nkosi was slow and it transpires he is the fastest player at the WC having run a 10.5 - 100m Then we hear PSDT, Lood, Serfontein, de Allende etc are slow - it’s bullshit Combrink is not slow and he is a class player who should have played many more tests

Except in his few test appearances Plum....this is England November 2016:

Daly kicked towards the visitors’ 22. The wing Ruan Combrinck made a mess of securing possession before flicking a pass along the ground to Willie le Roux, who failed to grasp hold of it. Brown hacked on and when he missed the ball with his hands as he tried to dive on it near the line, Lawes was on hand to touch down.

Stephanie, Lomp and Steppie are all slow.....and Nkosi doesn't look very pacy on the rugby field. I posted the article on Nkosi's 10.5....but it scarcely seems credible. Somebody thought he has running the 100 metres but he was running the 100 yards?

Combrink waisted himself on the wing, he should have been at XV with his long distance kicking skills.

He is not slow, but I doubt he is fast by international standards for an outside back.

He is too injury prone nowadays, and he may have lost pace to boot.

Plum,

Denny has the answer and is quite correct.

Unfortunately their are players of all shades who will be overlooked because of their color and not their skills.

It is due to political interference in sport and no other reason.

But fortunately many players of all shades have decided to get what is best for them financially and taken their talents to other shores.

        Who can blame them.

Hmmm . . . so I'm saying that while being white is something of a disadvantage for a winger, colour isn't the issue in Combrinck's case because Nkosi, Mapimpi and Kolbe are all better wingers . . . while Dense is saying that "everyone knows why he didn't make the squad and it has nothing to do with ability" . . . and along comes the drunken old fool Moffie sying that I'm the one blaming colour for Combrinck's non-selection.
I wonder if Moffie is making such an enormous dick of himself because he's on his second pink shandy or because he's actually that stupid?
LMAO!

I can't believe people are so critical of a team that just made the Rugby World Cup Final for the first time in 12 years...won the Rugby Championship for the first time and if you include the 3N, first time in 10 years. We beat the current 6N champs, the team that was No. 1 in the world a few months ago. We also beat the team that topped their pool ahead of Ireland and booted Scotty out of the world cup.

We beat NZ in NZ last year, drew there this year, ran them close in other encounters for the last 2 years.

The only negative was losing by 10 points in a dead rubber of sorts in our opener against the Mighty Allblacks...which turned out to be a blessing....

We improved exponentially since Rassie took over and almost beat the Poms at Twickers last year...but some put it down to luck...what a bunch of tossers SA supporters are. We don't deserve to win the RWC, but the Boks do!

GO BOKKE!!!!!SKOP GAT!!!AND THEN SOME!!!

Combrinck the dude who played on the Ireland tour?? The Lions fyullback?? If memory is correct he had bad acceleration which is basically as good as being slow when you talk about back three players.

Watch the clips for info on his acceleration.

He can play on either wing, 15 or 13.

Saffex

How annoying is it when one finds out that a young player is on the juice!!!???

Dyanti had it all going his way.

He didn't need roids.

There are plenty of legal ways to bring one's physical performance to sufficient levels. Especially if you're a pro sportsman with the backing of your club and country.

It's just lazy and stupid.

My feeling is that if you are busted juicing you should be banned from the national team for life.

Combrinck was brought in a few seasons ago and made a massive impact scoring an impressive try on debut ... then he had to make way for the darkies.

Mapimpi isn't worthy of his place. Anyone can score with an open tryline beckoning. He sucks under the highball and has no kicking game to speak of. The only thing he has going for him is a little pace.

He is by no means a better wing or full back than Combrinck.

Same can be said for many of the other "merit" selections.

The Goats haven't had their best team fielded in more than 2 decades. That trend will continue with picks like Beast, Kolisi, Bongi, Elton Jantjies and the useless Am..

What makes things even worse is when they included hasbeens like Willie Le Roux, Frans Steyn, Frans Louw, Schalk Brits, Duane Vermeulen, and Belly Flop Malherbe.

Draad ... making the final was pure fluke. It wasn't because you deserved it. You played against the All Blacks and were thumped by them. The same team that's just been destroyed by the English. Then you played against a host of useless sides that were merely there to make up the numbers.

It was the luck of the draw. Nothing more.

No side has had an easier route to the final than the Goats ... not in the history of the WC ... AND ... you needed a lot of help along the way ... some very strange calls going your way ... a blind eye turned to spear tackles ... truck and trailoring ... obstruction ... constantly being off side.

Your first real test will come this weekend.

Good luck ... you're going to need it.

Go England.

"Willie Le Roux, Frans Steyn, Frans Louw, Schalk Brits, Duane Vermeulen, and Belly Flop Malherbe"

 Willie Le Roux - Combrink

 Frans Steyn - Serfontein

Frans Louw - Jaco Kriel

Schalk Brits - Akker (the most underrated player in SA)

Duane Vermeulen - DDP

All game-breakers.

None of that is to say that all of them have been poor. Willie has been, he'll probably tell you that himself.

Against Wales, the majority of the Bok problems arose at the back. Willie, Faf, Pollard all of them. Faf got stripped from a good attacking position. The backs gave away crazy amounts of territory through nervy mistakes.

I did notice Pollard's goal kicks fluttering away weirdly on the descent. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Kriel's injury may have been in the Boks favor. Am has turned out defensively superior. It's pretty unanimous at this point.

So Kriel to 15 after the WC? Let him and Willemse battle it out there.

No Kriel is a far superior attacking 13 than Am we need Jessie back. Jessie is no 15 he has no boot on him. Willemse, Gelant and Fassi are all great options to replace Willie. Combrink is 30 too old to invest in now Malherbe has been good no need to replace him. Wilco Louw for Koch

Whatever happens on Saturday, the Boks are sorted up front.

Not only on current form but also in terms of players waiting in the wings.

The backs, a few notable exceptions aside, have been awful.

Perhaps wasteful is a better term.

Since Rassie took over, there have been moments and brief periods where the product the backs have delivered has been on par with foward's.

The disparity, from game to game, doesnt seem too large.

It's the big picture, where you add up the hours and hours of absolute forward dominance and then look at the balance sheet that you realise, there's a world beating pack backed up by very poor back line play.

Even taking all the box kicks into account, things still don't add up.
