Congratulations WP - no choke today
Congrats WP !
Sadly for the Lions they made too many mistakes, and t hey missed 5 kicks.
WP executed better and made much less errors.
Congrats to the Capies
I note with concern the departure of BOTH Harris and Cilliers. Malherbe and Kitshof better come back well.
I'm thrilled about the win. Well done to our boys, the team deserved the title this year.
We couldn't have win the cup without players like Michael Rhodes, Cheslin Kolbe, Senatla, Nizaam Carr, Catrakilis and others. Those players played superb throughout the season and we hope they stay at the club.
The future is looking bright for the WP/Stormers club with talented players coming through also in the WP academy.
Both teams defended relatively good, the Lions scrum was once again great and had some momentum in the second half but primarily a team will not win if the flyhalf misses so many kicks at goal. That was the case in this game, they didn't control the game well enough either.
Jaco Kriel again was effective and Nizaam Carr. Both players deserves to be in the bok squad based on their performances in Super XV and Currie Cup.
We are fortunate to have found a number of good young locks. Grobbler and Kleyn.
Who will be our other tightheads. We have Maherbe and who else? Loosheads, Kitshoff, Kebble and Verma ak
I agree our loose forward trio was solid with Rhodes and Elstadt, Carr was also huge and so consistent.
Well Pat Cilliers wasn't ideal at tighthead, he is off to play for montepellier in france anyway. Oli Kebble can replace him at tighthead, he can also play loosehead of course. I would opt for Kebble at tighthead with Kitshoff at loosehead if his injury recovered. I don't rate Malherbe.
Probably the most versatile loose forward in SA. Good speed and incredible strength with a eye for the gaps. If Carr is not involved in the boks squad for the end of the year tour based on his performances in Super XV and Currie Cup its beyond me. It would be a total waste of talent.
Kebble looks too tall for a tighthead but we shall see how he goes. I have my doubts about Vermaak. I thought Alistair should have started with the stronger Kebble - is he injured? Our scrum was not up to it - that is the hon3st truth. But for Boschoff having a rare off day we would have comfortably lost the final. To be honest we were extremely lucky to win this Currie Cup as the Lions were the better side on the day.
Malherbe and Kitshof have proved their pedigree at Super 15 level and Kebble should be fine. Vermaak may or may not make it - we shall see how he goes. He had better work his butt off during th e break!
Malherbe may have been good against Argentina as you say but how consistent is he in other matches compared to the others? He's mainly average at best on most days and how he got a bok call up is beyond me.
Tomas du Toit was one of the most promising props in prospect for our province but it's a pity he left for the Sharks...
Kolbe declined the offer to join the sharks a while back. Now that's loyalty.
Kebble is a loosehead and very promising. Malherbe a tighthead and very good in the scrum an in general play.
Carr is 103 kg. Well time will tell whether he can take it playing at 6 in Super Rugby. Strength will not be his main asset. He is a small loosie with some good skills. Could do a job for the Stormers but I have doubts how he will go against the big boys who are as fast and skilful as he is. Can he play a Hooper type game? Maybe. We shall see - give him a shot on tour.
Biltong, Jaco Kriel is probably one of our fastest loosies, he does not shy away from being a true fetcher - i.e. battle on the ground for the ball and his ball handling skills are first class.
Marcell Coetzee impressed this year and so did Schalk Burger.
My starting loosies would be Kriel (6), Schalla (7) and Vermeulen (8) with Marcell, Minnie and Carr their backup.
I did not consider Flo.
Agree Blikkies, Marcell has improved his groundwork, last year he was useless on the ball, this year he made some good pilfers.
I don't think Minnie will get a shot though, Meyer likes bigger loosies, by memory Minnie is under 100 KG's
I dont think Alberts works hard enough. Elstadt at 115 is an option but to me Burger, Coetzee and Vermuelen have a nice balance re pace and power. Burger will keep going for 80 mins
Derick Minnie according to the Lions website is 108kg. The strongest of the Lions loose trio. Whitely is 105kg.Jaco K riel is 100kg faster than Carr and a fetcher.
Blikkies
As much as I do like Carr I wouldn't consider to start him ahead of Kriel. Carr can play number 8 or Flanker but is more preferred at 8 and I wouldn't wanna leave out Vermeulen. Carr can make a impact off the bench maybe at the 60th minute. If Meyer involves Carr or Kriel in the squad my faith in him will be restored.
Marcel Coetzee is a class loose forward but doesn't run on good angles and breaks the line often as Carr would do or Kriel. I think that speciality is important to have as a looseforward. I would like to see him stop running straight and more on different angles. His work rate is fine though.
Congrats to Jerome and his fellow WeePee supporters.
We had our opportunities and unfortunately didn't take them.
As a young bunch of lads with a rookie coach we've had a great season. I'm sure we as team will be the better for it next year.
Look forward to it.
Gooooo Lioooonnnnssss!!
Respect to you and others that showed admiration in defeat and congratulated the team.
I wish the Golden Lions best of luck for the future. Good effort.
