Could combining the Cheetahs and lions work bette rths itime around

I am not in any way mooting this as a desirable option. The option fo me is the queens earn their stripes to play in the Super 15 firstly by earning a spot in the Currie Cup and then progressing to challange the other sides and be at least better than the leoopards, pumas and Griquas. That should ltake them till the end of the current Supe 15 contracts etc.

However i ask this as a theoretical question simply because the playing styles of the Cheetahs and Lions have become very similar. No clash of style here as there was in the past.

These are our two most mecurial sides. 

Well if you took the Lions as the core team.....what would the Cheetahs add? Goosen is the only Cheetahs back who looks like a top class talent, but the Lions aleady have Jantjies. Strauss for sure, Brussouw for sure......but who else?

The fact is the Cheetahs don't really strengthen the Lions, they don't have the talent. So the combination loses more by confusion than it gains by talent.

Well remarkably the Lions only scraped a win against the Cheetahs. Cheetahs were not on song either plus an away game.

Dont for get about Depth. Lions are thin in depth. From the Cheetahs there is Coenie, WP Nel, Ashley, Eberson, Daniller and their new find Willie le Roux as well as Strauss, Brussouw and Goosen.   That is collectively a very significant addition to the Lions squad surely!

Hasbeen, I'm not saying that nothing is added. But if you take the Lions core team.....very little is added. One would think there would be great synergy, but counter intuitively there isn't.

Amazingly though, if you combined the Sharks and Stormers you gain a lot. Aplon, Jean,De Jongh, Bekker, Schalk, Etzebeth would all add enormously to the Sharks. It would seem there is more synergy in combining our better teams than our weaker sides. Who would have thunk  it?

Combination of the two is unacceptable. I agree with you Moz. It would be fantastic if our Super ruby sides pulled out of the Super XV and gave SARU the massive kick up the backside that it has needed for many years!

Moz the simple fact is that if  selectors sat down to select a squad out of the Lions and Cheetahs a large number of Cheetahs players would be chosen. The squad would be hugely strengthened in terms of depth.

We all know however there are a host of other issues. This was a theoretical query based on styles of rugby which I contend have become very similar.

It just doesn't work. In theory it gives greater depth, but it doesn't do anything to improve either side. It's one big conflicting mess; something already proven emphatically. Why repeat the sae mistake. At least a Stormers/Sharks merger would remedy each sides vulnerabilities.
