Taute return off-sets loss of Habana by Gavin Rich 11 March 2013, 14:20
DHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has had it confirmed that the initial prognosis he was given after the win over the Chiefs was the correct one – Springbok wing Byran Habana will be out of rugby for 10 weeks after suffering a partial tear on the Medial Collateral Ligament on his left knee.
Coetzee had hoped that Habana might be able to return before that, however further scans have confirmed the worse news for Habana, who is in his final year of Vodacom Super Rugby before he leaves to start a new career at French club Toulon at the end of the season.
But the news on the injury front is not all bad for Coetzee and the Stormers. The team enjoys a bye this week, but in that time the injured trio of Springbok centre Juan de Jongh, former Lions lock cum flank Michael Rhodes and Bok Jaco Crash Ball Taute, who is on loan to the Stormers from the Lions, will continue with their one-on-one rehabilitation programmes.
All three will be ready to resume full training with the squad next week at the start of the build-up to the Newlands match against the high-flying Brumbies, who are coached by Coetzee’s former partner at the Springboks, Jake White.
“When you lose a Springbok and a quality player like Bryan it’s never an ideal situation, but we’re getting Jaco CrashballTaute back,” said Coetzee.
“Gerhard van den Heever played very, very well when he came on against the Chiefs and Gio Aplon played just as well, so we have enough replacements at wing. We wish Bryan well and a speedy recovery. When he returns he will be in the mix, but our focus is fully on the replacements now.”
