The school kids beat the Blue Bulls 30-6 and it really was a one-way contest. Problem for the WP though - the Bulls and Sharks agents will be all over the WP to sign up youngsters. Unlike last year - when the standard of play was not what it should have been - this year the standard was massively better. We saw what happened in the Under 20 WC thus year - when the forwards were not up to standard. This year the forward standards are higher than during the last two years and we will be able to field a very good Under 20 team next year. I still have a question - how is it possible that 2m+ and 120 kgs are now par for 18 year olds and younger and the norm for playing at locks and loosies? The size of the youngsters are awesome and so is their muscular development.

CM - thanks for the updates. I would think some of that is nutrition, some of it resistance training, but some of it weird science :) Anyone know if they test at Craven week?

oi-matey Yes they do, So the boys will be extra careful - because a lot of them would like contracts and admission to the rugby academies of the provinces. Positive tests could be severely detrimental to them. Another weird thing - I was watching the Zimbabwean team as well - they were doing very well - there were 5 white boys in their team. Perhaps looking at the size of the youngsters I should not call them "boys" - the commentators call them "men"

Saffex It would be very interesting to see the school team to be selected at the end of Craven Week. There is a center by the name of Du Plessis who stood up head and shoulders about the rest - also playing for WP. I know you keenly follow the youngsters coming through and that was part of the reason I posted about Craven Week - partly to alert you to be on the look out for the new promising kids. Apparently the schools team every year plays the Academies team and last year they played a series against English and French school teams as well. Any idea as to what their programme for this year is?

I don't know any programme Mike, good to hear that there are some brutes coming through, for the game is about brutes. 

 

Good to see Jacques du Plessis on the bench for he Bulls this weekend.

 

My sons rugby side leave for a SA tour this Saturday, they are playing Outeniqua which should be interesting given how strong Outeniqua are. My sons side is shit hot and this should be an interesting test. They have Saffer as their coach and a good number of England and Northampton Saints squad players in the side.

Saffex Nice to hear about your son's school team and their visit to George. They may have a tough time against Outeniqua. Last time I was in the area - my brother told me that Outeniqua is heavily sponsored by local business and they go around all schools in the Southern Cape and recruit players to come to George with all fees and other costs paid. I suspect that is also what happened to other top sport schools nowadays as well. Problem is some of these buggers are dumb and it will be difficult to get them passing grades. LOL SWD did well against the Lions - even though they lost - and since Outeniqua is their main feeder school - I think they would be a hard nut to crack. I think they also have three 2m 120 kgs players - so it is not going to be easy. Keep us informed as to what is happening.

I would imagine Outeniqua will beat St Jo's but it will be a good game. The team has all bases covered in that they have a big pack of forwards and a hell of a backline, especially the centres, fullback and 10. Their 8 is awesome. The Fijian at 15 is a real handful.

 

They are a young side with a good few 16 year olds on board

Indeed there are some amazing physical specimens in SA Rugby, however, I feel they could grasp their full potential if the system changed a bit.

 

Maybe opt for dividing the kids by weight, so that their physical prowess counts for nothing. That way they are forced to develop a wider array of skills whereby they can outsmart their opponents, which, combined with their natural athleticism and physicality, would make for some tremendous forwards.

 

On another note, I'm thrilled to see Jacques du Plessis on the bench against the Stormers. Elstadt will have to put up a hand this weekend. His physicality and hard edge will be needed against the Potgieters. If Elstadt and Armand (when he takes the pitch) fail to impose themselves, Deon Fourie and Nizaam Carr --both players known for their specific skills in loose play -- will have a hard time containing the Bulls trio.

 Cruz exactly the point I made. Armand should be starting in palce of Carr (A mediocre player). It is also a huge pity Tiaan Liebenberg and Bekker were not fit!!! In the backline Allende in for De Jongh was a must. Why Coezeee persists in playing de Jongh ahead of Allende is a big question. 

As for these big kids well the small is beautiful brigade will just have to try and catch up with what is happening in the game.

Saffex I watched the SWF - ET game. The SWD beats EP by 40 - 14. Most of the SWD team players com from Outeniqua - so your sons team will have a problem I think. SWD has a wing by the name of Duhan van der Merwe. He is 1,94 and weighs 98 kgs. He is definitely taller, heavier and faster in speed than Engelbrecht - watch out for him as well

Spooony If you are talking about Duhan van der Merwe - he is as far as I know between 17 and 18 years of age. If he goes to the ruby academy he will bulk up quite a bit - likely to be 104-105 in another 2 years time.

Here is some info on some of the selected players FOR YOUR MEMORY BANK:- OUTENIQUA Outeniqua High School’s wonderfully gifted players, the versatile Warrick”Boogie” Gelant and Duhan van der Merwe, were part of a triumphant 2013 SA Sevens Under-18 team that won Gold at the Australian Youth Olympics. They certainly have a bright future ahead for themselves. PAUL ROOS As expected Paul Roos will always be a quality outfit and in Daniel du Plessis, son of ex-Springbok Michael du Plessis, they have an exciting prospect. A huge worry though is that the young playmaker may not be ready to play due to a long term injury he picked up last year. When fully fit he could be key in the backline for the maroon machine from Stellenbosch. He did play in Craven Week and was very good. PAARL GIM Paarl Gimnasium looks set to have another great season ahead for them and 2012 SA Schools lock JD Schickerling is certainly a rising star for the future. ”Jakkals” showed some extraordinary line out work and great athleticism around the field in 2012; he’s definitely going to prove to be a daunting task for most teams this season. Their star Number 8 Rikus Bothma has been tipped to be one of the stars for this year’s schoolboy rugby season. The highly rated loose forward is a powerful ball carrier and an inspirational leader in the pack. Let’s not forget about Jacques Vermuelen, this defensively sound blindside flank is definitely a contender for SA Schools selection this year. Schickerling did not play Craven week because of injury - but e was included in the team.

Outeniqua won the Rugby festival in 2012 beating Paarl Gym/ I think they played in the final again this year with roles reversed. Shame WP have given SWD to the Kings...

Spooony Thanks for the additional info. After the Pollard episode - I think WP will be all over players from the SWD to sign them up contractually - and so would the Sharks and the Bulls. Van der Merwe would be a star signing for them - so lets wait and see.

Mile in reality WP do not need Pollard. Bulls do to fit their style. We gave up Pollard so we can have Habana. Not a bad deal mate.
