Why have I no faith in the Proteas batting line up anymore? Smith has been out for very low scores this year - but after being dropped in the slips at 19 - he made 67 runs and then got his standard ball - LBW.
Kallis went for a duck first ball - after a serious defective performance against the Pakistani's as well. Duminy followed soon for 2 runs.
At least De Villiers tried to hit balls to make runs but he was caught in the crease being LWB. The fall of the quick wickets earlier forced him to defend and not play his natural game.
Despite the idea that you need not score fast in tests - you cannot ignore poor balls bowled at you in the knowledge that it is safe not to play at them and then got snookered by a good ball - like happened repeatedly today.
Smith makes one good score in every ten innings he bats. Kallis for the past two years never made a decent score in any tests he played in. Duminy normally in tests bugger up badly.
I know they want Kallis to be in as an all-rounder - but I think his batting has gone backwards massively. It is hard to imagine a Proteas team without Smith and Kallis - they were class acts, but are they still class acts? Petersen never was a class act and that remains a fact.
They have to do something about that batting line-up if they want to remain the no 1 test playing side in World Cricket.
