... Chiefs' fans will need no reminding that the last time these two teams met, on Anzac Day, the Brumbies rolled them 41-23.

What they should be reminded of is that Aaron Cruden was injured and did not play. His presence alone offers the Chiefs hope this time because the way he plays could play havoc with the Brumbies back defence, which, led by Matt Toomua, can be very destructive.

This chalkboard should be very simple:

1. I'll outline what Cruden does with the ball in hand that makes him so dangerous, and

2. Why that could nullify Toomua's effectiveness and subsequently have a knock-on effect for the rest of the defence.

1. What Cruden has is the wonderful ability to engage the loose forwards and the inside back defenders with his first couple of steps.

The last time these teams met the Chiefs were unable to ask the Brumbies any questions in the inside channels and were constantly hit behind the gainline. The Chiefs attack relies on fluent service to the outsides and you can't do that without establishing an inside channel threat that will hold defenders.

Cruden can do this. His first step is often lateral, but he has that ability to prop off his outside foot and straighten the attack suddenly and often devastatingly. All the while he is carrying the ball in two hands, keeping his options open.

But what separates Cruden from others - and I make no apologies for saying that at the top of the game he is the best player in the world at this - is his ability to find a weak shoulder on defence. That is the defender's outside shoulder and once he has done this he has a brilliant range of offloads.

This tactic worked best when he had Sonny Bill Williams alongside him at the Chiefs. SBW would run lines straight off Cruden's shoulders and they were devastating in that inside channel. Opposition defences have that to look forward to again next season!

2. So why is it so important Cruden gets the line-challenging part of his game going tomorrow night?

We have talked in an earlier Chalkboard about the almost free rein Toomua is given in defence. He is such an aggressive defender and he comes off the line so fast that it squeezes the midfield. He gets in the distributors peripheral vision, thereby cutting off the outside options.

What Cruden has the ability to do is turn this into a weakness. If Toomua can see in his eyeline that Cruden's initial lateral steps have put him outside the inside defenders, he has to make a decision whether to turn inside to assist. When you're rushing out, indecision can leave big holes.

On subsequent plays Toomua will be reluctant to move up so quickly, allowing Cruden the opportunity to get the ball wide, where the Chiefs are so dangerous.

He needs good ball early and to establish this running game early and really challenge that channel between halfback Nic White and Toomua. If he can do this, the Chiefs go a long way to turning around that Anzac Day result and living to fight another day.

Thanks for posting this article Brycy. I wish SBW was already on the team & so does Cruden am sure. Go Chiefs!

I have made thsi point a number of times if you play a hlafback combo like the passive Pienaar and Morne. Play reinach and Pollard and it all changes dramatically.
Brcy and JW the critical thing is - He needs good ball early and to establish this running game early and really challenge that channel between halfback Nic White and Toomua
Now the Brumbies pack is nothing too special but can the wee chiefies cope with even them? They are doomed should they meet the Warts!
Moderate your hopes my good friends!

Beeno: I agree with your analysis of what it will take for the Chiefs to be effective. No pre-game chest-beating from us but Chiefs will try many ways to win good ball & to use it effectively. It won't always be relying on set piece play.

Everything for the Chiefs depends on their forwards stepping up.
I think the main contenders are 1 Warts, 2 Sharks and 3 Crusaders.
We shall see.

 Ex Keo

Brumbies flyhalf Matt Toomua will pose the greatest threat to the Chiefs in the first play-off qualifier in Canberra on Saturday, writes SIMON BORCHARDT.

Toomua missed the Brumbies' 39-8 defeat to the Waratahs in Sydney because of a groin injury sustained against France, but returned to start at 10 against the Force last weekend. He produced a red-hot performance, scoring the first Brumbies' hat-trick since Mark Gerrard's in the 2004 Super 12 final, having a hand in another two tries, and making a couple of big hits on opposite number Zac Holmes. Most importantly, he gave the Brumbies backline the direction it had lacked in Sydney when Christian Lealiifano was calling the shots.

Toomua's battle with Aaron Cruden could be decisive in a match between two teams who have blown hot and cold this season. The Brumbies won just two of their last five league matches, while the Chiefs' wins against the Hurricanes and Blues, which got them into the play-offs, were preceded by three consecutive defeats, to the Hurricanes, Waratahs and Highlanders. Had the champions not snatched two come-from-behind draws in South Africa, their two-year reign would already be over.

The Brumbies will go into this match as favourites having beaten the Chiefs 41-23 in Canberra in April, scoring five tries to two. The Chiefs have only recorded two victories in Australia's capital city in 10 attempts, the last of which came in 2008.

Goal-kicking could prove to be crucial, especially if the game is tight. These sides are the worst in this department this season, with the Brumbies having landed 63% of their shots at goal and the Chiefs 69%. Cruden has kicked at 68%, while Lealiifano’s 49% (21/43) is the worst of any of the 24 players to attempt 20-plus kicks.

The Brumbies have made two injury-enforced changes to the match 23 that beat the Force, with Robbie Coleman starting on the left wing in place of Clyde Rathbone (hamstring strain) and debutant Allan Alaalatoa replacing JP Smith (knee injury) on the bench. The Chiefs have tweaked the team that edged the Blues, with Dwayne Sweeney starting at fullback in place of Tom Marshall.

The Chiefs coaching staff are also an asset. They will devise a game plan that will get the best out of the team but the players have to really step up a few notches in terms of execution.

Cruden has great strengths, but also great weaknesses too. He hasn't been able to pin down the #10 jersey for the All Blacks so you have to ask if he is really the best player in the world in any rate at 10. For me Toomua is the better of the two by far, the most complete of the 10s out there right now. I guarantee you the Aussies wouldn't have bombed the 2013 RC with him at 10! Cruden? Well, even with Sonny Bill at 12 Jake totally shut down their attack in 2012 in only his third or so game for the Brumbies. They were reduced to playing a very lateral game and were extremely lucky to come away with the draw that day. I think that game sums up perfectly how you stop these players, they can play havoc with you only if you let them get out of hand. If you start allowing them to dictate the pace of the game and turn the game into a frenetic mess where they can turn your defensive line from an organized network of defenders to an easy one-on-one situation (think back to Ellis Park last year for that one!). The two most important All Blacks that I would say are the best in the world are Dagg and Nonu. No, not because Dagg is a great attacker, which he is, but he has the best boot of all 15s and is totally flawless under the high ball. Of all New Zealanders he is by far the best at playing in the 10 channel and getting a break going or putting players into space. Take a good look at the All Blacks tries in the past, Dagg is far better than Cruden at this. I would even rate Willie Le Roux better him at this.

Yeah I'm hoping Toomua is the Wallaby standoff also as he got schooled last year by Cruden in the Bledisloe something terrible, 47 - 22 scoreline....

Bernard Foley would probably be a better choice...

...Toomua  had a good game last week against the Force... but he needs to repeat that performance against the Tahs otherwise he'll probably be sitting on the bench for the Bledisloe....Not a bad thing having a vers atile player of his quality that can play centre and standoff there either...good back up and indicates there's depth in the squad.

So unlike Ireland Cruden didn't get a second chance to save the game....what goes around comes around. Playing for any team but NZ I doubt Cruden would be much.

Cruden still not at his best, Barrett is pretty handy to have around, just to mix it up.

matt toomua is a million times better then cruden version 2014.

ever since cruden has had the big C beside his name in the chiefs 2014 season, hes been giving us nothing but C- like performances.
take away the captaincy from him, so that he concentrate on his duties as the incumbent 10. f;yhalves have enough on their plate without the burden of leading and inspiring the team as well.

SBWW will help out crudens poor form big time, but i dont know if that will be enough to get cruden over this slump, cos hes trying too hard to lead and the sad thing is, hes not even doing a good job of leading.

who would have thought that clarke would be the player most missed by the chiefs with all the elite superstar names that have left the last two serasons.

also go work on ur Fiung goal kicking cruden, far too hot and hold for a [player many consoider carters back up.

after the finals last weekend, nothing has changed my mind, when cater retires barret will be the incumbent 10 and cruden will be the back up, but will eventually leave for the bling before the 2019 japan RWC.
bookmark this thread boys.

Sasuke San: I have thought Barrett would overtake Cruden as the no. 2 from early on. Glad we have both though because these campaigns are brutal & injuries are going to hit all teams.
By the way, you disappeared from the forum over the last few weeks & Beeno has been running rampart lately, lol If we  don't keep an eye on him Storming Ed may make a reappearance
PS: Denny is on another recruitment drive. Could you contact Rosemarie and see if she wants to join this forum? You were closer to her than I was.

@dr win,

i can remember a few peeps back on abs.com saying that barret would overtake crudz on the All Blacks No10 pecking order, and i remember saying at the time u guys must be crazy, LMFAO,
funny what a below average season can do to an arm chair critics opinion,

no worries about brother beeno, hes like sarugby.coms hilarious 2 year old son, we all laugh at his antics and entertain his adorable ways, but when it comes time for the grown ups to do their thing, he is sent into the lounge to watch loony tunes, while the adults discuss rugby,

and i will ask rose about joining this forum,

Sas , considering the Canes with virtually an AB backline couldn't even make the finals....knocked out by the Chiefs I think.....also with Barret they lost to the Blues and the Highlanders the rounds preceding that but we can't criticise Barret for that....but Hansen probably will unfortunately and go with Cruden...

....to say Barret will overtake Cruden based on those results is illogical...but I can see from yr previous posts that all the Canes players are above criticism for their losses and the blame is always directed at the coach Hammet...

Which begs the question , who are you gunna blame next year when Hammett is gone?

Just pulling yr chain mate.

Sasuke San: I wrote to her myself but as you know her better it will be more persuasive if she hears from you.
On Beeno, we have had some good banter & more than a few laughs Especially on this thread starting about half way down:
 Denny: Some looney tunes humor
believe it or not you were right on the money when you mentioned Looney tunes as bugs bunny, Elmer fudd and Daffy duck were all involved in a caper about moles, trolls & multiple ids, lol Storming Ed was of course mentioned in passing
