In the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings, the Crusaders are considering a name change.
In a way it will be a pity because of the legacy of the mighty Crusaders who are without question the most dominant and successful Super Rugby franchise of all time but one does have to admit that it was probably a stupid choice of name in the first place, considering the negative connotation that Muslims have for the word.
Back in 1996 when the name was chosen, the other serious candidate was "The Plainsmen" so I would guess that is the favourite if there is to be a name change. Not sure it inspires the same kind of fear and respect that the Crusaders have built up over the years. Any other suggestions from our Kiwi friends . . . or anyone else? How about "The Canterbury Globalists"? Baboon-ou would love that!
PS I wonder if there will be a name change for Saracens in the UK as well . . . and what about the Red Cross?
