A bulging disk in the neck can't be much good for a prop forward. Nor can it really be fixed with rehabilitation.

Lukas van Biljon had a similar issue if I recall correctly. Before his injury, he was a brilliant, dynamic player.....much in the Coenie mould. He exerted every ounce of energy he had.....to the detriment of his body.  I wonder if Coenie did the same.....how much effort went into that one big scrum that caused Meyer to smile? How much stress on the neck lifting the whole left side of the scrum? Multiply that by 30 weeks of rugby a year.

These young guys play huge amounts of rugby before they have reached physical maturity. The meat grinder may just have claimed another victim.

I have always thought that they are pushing these young frontrow players too quickly. Many of them (those that shine at early age and then get pushed too soon) either pick up injuries or fade away. I was surprised when Van Biljon picked up his injury at the time. It is not normal for an ex-wrestler to pick up that kind of neck injury, unless they stop doing those "typical wrestling" exercises.

Lets hope the fact that he has not been pushed to play with the injury will help the cause. The lad is a great prospect

Nobody yet has said it is a career threatening injury so hopefully he will be out perhaps for the rest of the season and thats it.

Beast needs good competition to keep him on his toes. Greyling though is a no nosense prop with a good work ethic. Pink of course doesn't really suit him.

Mozart

I had a pinch nerve in the neck problem and was operated on by the top SA Surgeon in that field.   He also treated Van Biljon and told me he actually panicked every time Van Biljon went into a maul situation.   However, I never thought that Van Biljon was in fact facing the end of his career through that situation - but What is evident was that he became very hessitant to go full out in games and that could be a more serious problem in itself.

Nevertheless I worry about him and hope that he gets well completely.

This is very sad news indeed. Coenie is one of my current modern heroes and I was looking forward to a great career for him - very similar in the Os mould.

I am satisfied with Greyling's callup but I have not seen him on the tighthead, so I doubt if the claim that he can play on both sides of the scrum is accurate.

Maybe CJ is too old, but I am surprised Meyer did not turn to CJ who is familiar with both sides of the scrum and more importantly, he gave Jannie a lesson or two during their last encounter.

Blikkes

Sorry - but CJ is a definite nightmare of the past.   Province could not get rid of him fast enough - and we all know their props are youngsters barely out oif school.   They prefer the youngsters - show you how really abd CJ is.

Mike, I think CJ is a lazy ba****d. Yes, I know he failed at Province, but I also think if CJ got real challenges, he could deliver. He was a success with the Cheetahs and his stirling performance in the 2007 RWC against Sheridan comes to mind.

Blikkies I also picked on the match up between CJ and Jannie. And you're right, CJ gave him a pretty hard time. I would also have turned to CJ. Mike is right in the sense that he is very injury prone.....but off the bench, he'd be a real asset.

I can't say I rate Greyling....another very big guy with poor technique.

Nope CJ is past it. Greyling is a hard nut and has been in good form. Nothing wrong with his technique at all and is a prop that likes to play with ball in hand. Good choice

Dave, I agree Greyling will stand up well enough to his opponent at tighthead. Unanswered question is how well will he perform when needed at 3?

Well lest hope he does not have to go on as a 3, but Meyer may play Kruger on the bench, for Jannie is able to play 1 as well if Beast gets injured

How the hell can the guy be past it when he just scrummed the incumbent Bok tighthead into the ground? Huh? Man you do talk rubbish. As for Greyling, Malherbe gave him all he could handle, forcing him into 2 penalties. With you it's all the same isn't it, the young guy is better than the old guy....mindless drivel.

RE Greyling - I think one of the form props in S15 this year - big aggressive in general play and hits breakdowns as hard as anyone in the comp. Will be interesting to see him @ test level and see if he can match it there.

Re scrum technique well poms scrum as good as any so will find out soon enough. Well deservewd callup for Greyling though -

Dispite all  the baloonie posted re the guy I have not really seen Harris shunted around by anyone this season. Now he is one player who can play both sides of the scrum. His work rate outside the scrum is top notch. Underated by those lacking rugby acumen!!

I agree though that Greyling is not a bad choice. They seem confident he can handle the job at tighthead and De Villiers has been working with him to give him some tips. CJ breaks down almost every match so I understand Meyer's reluctance to pick him.

He has a few more on his list of "past it" including international player of the week Jean De Villiers....
Habana who had a great game is also "past it"  and then of course his pet hate Morne who I believe had one of his better games.

"mindless drivel"..... Damn right it is.......he sounds like Twakkies after some dop!!

Well for a start Denise, CJ never came close to scrumming Jannie into the ground, that is the biggest load of crap I have read in a long time. Jannie has been as solid as a rock all season and to state that Lions pack got anywhere near to making an impression on the Sharks pack is a laugh.

You are such a stupid dunce that only you could draw these wonderful conclusions from a single match by the Boks under Meyer. What happens id Habana has a crap game this weekend dumbo?

Better still, why not come up with something original instead of pathetically hanging onto every word Moz says - find your own identity you sad excuse for a human being and butt ugly to boot?

A question, why on earth do you even bother with the gym, why not spend that money on a facelift instead - gald to be of assistance!!

With all due respect to the self appointed World Authority on Rugby I have quoted you verbatim....you do know the meaning of the word verbatim, dontcha?.......it's not what Moz says, or anyone else says, it's what you have said....I've just brought it to your attention and it sounds like you're upset by your own baseless comments. With your hyper inflated ego I'd imagine you'd enjoy someone quoting you Bwhahahahaha

Enrolled in a course of anger management yet?.....strange things happen in a mid-life crisis....

Dave was also dead against the Os recall by Jake......dead against Monty. And of course when Jake won the damn thing, the opposition had to be poor.....just as this time CJ never hammered Jannie, even though it was there for all but the blind to see.

The facts change constantly, poor Dave's opinions dont.

Denise, I know you are stupid, but is it not Moz's take on CJ that I am referring to.

Mid life crisis? why would I be having one of them? They say its either a harley or an affair - lets take it as a given that an affair is out of the equation for you given how damn ugly you are - and paying for the pleasure hardly counts.

Denise, inspire us all with something original, being the rugby man that you are - come on ugly mug, spoil us

World Authority.... I was never an Adi or Murray fan...and that's a fact. There is not a single post where I've supported either of them. However, Murray was overlooked by two national coaches whereas Adi wasn't....you though, spent your time shrieking away months on end for the useless Murrays inclusion.

Other than his 125kg's which had you frothing at the mouth he had zero skill or talent and if he had he would have made a name for himself somewhere else. For whatever reason Adi got picked ahead of him by non other than the national coach at the time. Murray in my not so humble opinion was the lesser talented of the two but if I had been national coach then neither of them would have made my squad.

 Comprehende?

Trust the ugly mug to cock this up to. You will find that Murray has spent most of his career injured and played very little rugby. When he did make the Bok squad the lad was on fire and a far better prospect that useless Adi ever was.

Sadly injury got the better of Murray but you are toooooooo stupid to comprehend that - shock, shock
