Dave Rennie linked to Springboks job

Dave Rennie has emerged as a shock candidate to become coach of the Springboks.

Leading South African news outlet Rapport is reporting that South African Rugby is considered Rennie to replace current coach Allister Coetzee who has overseen the worst Springbok season in history.

Coetzee is already on record as saying he expects to be sacked after losing nine tests this year including a first ever loss to Six Nations minnows Italy, ending the season with a miserable 33% winning record.

According to Rapport, South African officials have already begun work behind the scenes to secure Rennie who is stepping down from Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs at the end of the 2017 competition.

Coetzee is set to face a performance appraisal by a sub-committee of SA Rugby, and will know after 13 December whether or not he will remain in the top job.

Rapport claimed Rennie, who led the Chiefs to the Super Rugby title in 2012 and 2013, has strongg support at the highest level of SA Rugby. The news outlet calimed other coaches under consideration include former Boks mentor Jake White and Rassie Erasmus.

However, it also claimed "a potential stumbling block" to any removal of Coetzee will cost R13m ($NZ1.32m) to pay him out of the remaining two years of his contract. SA Rugby is in a dire financial situation, with the governing body reported to be as much as R19m ($NZ2m) in the red.

The other problem is Rennie signed a two-year deal with Glasgow in Scotland, with an option of a third, several months ago.

At the time, he said he has aspirations for an international role.

"There'll be a lot of international jobs come up after 2019 but ultimately the thinking is it will give us a couple of years at Glasgow and then give us a chance to see how things have gone," he said at the time.

"If we're loving it there we may be keen to stay longer. It's what has tended to happen."

 Rennie is a damn good coach but it sounds like there are a few obstacles to becoming the Springbok coach. Maybe Jake White will tell him how to break a contract that would get rid of one problem.

 I guess if there's a performance contract in place they might not have to payout Coetzee .......but knowing SARU....

 Lets watch out what happens.   SARU is apparently having the idea to flog a 75% share in franchise teams - thus raising money from the private sector.
If they do that - the end result would be that private investors would not accept dud coaches and there may be some changes on that level.   Why not on top level as well?     

 Can't see him accepting that poisoned chalice, clubs in Europe would hire him in a minute and they have larger wallets than SARU from the sound of it, and he will not have all the quota garbage and infighting to contend with.Stranger things have happened but any coach with brains would hesitate taking this job.
Best you can hope for is an up and comer with big hairy b@lls that wants to risk everything and hopes to get a break and make a name for himself.

 I wouldn't take it if I were Rennie....SARU would throw him under a bus within the blink of an eye.

 Much as I want him to stay with the Chiefs you guys could certainly use him ,rather you guys than some stanky NH team!

Can't see Rennie taking such a big step down from the mighty Chiefs to a minnow team like the Springboks. Anyways as far as I know Rennie is still coaching the Chiefs next year so Springboks will have to wait.

 the post has its positives for a coach,... for any coach,.... it's a win-win situation

it's impossible to do it worst than Coetzee,... now the boks are in the bottom of the hole,... 4 wins from 12 and a completely unstructured game with no attacking and no defending patterns,.... an erratic selection policy which was changed with each loss or failure,....
if the SARU sticks with the current coaching staff the boks can easily end up being the 9-10th in the world,.... any coach in the world can improve this,... just introducing an structure to their game and a logical selection policy the boks could easily reach the 3rd-4th in the rankings

and that would be noted and underscored as the job of a great coach,... the one who took the boks out of the hole they were

and if the coach is unable to do this, for whatever reason, he always can blame the SARU and the countr y's politics for the failure,... a win-win situation

One obstacle is he's not black, perhaps this can be overcome if they declare him an "honorary black". This would complete the cycle of racism.

It certainly does not sound convincing...just bad reporting..there is no indication that he wants the job...for one thing the quota system would have to be scrapped and the coach given free reins to do his thing...no coach with some self respect would operate with a "ball and chain around his ankles".

Cotter Vern (leaving Scotland, I believe) would be a better option if they agreed to leave him alone and gave him the initiative.

 According to News24 this rumour about Rennie is not of any value and that he is committed to Glasgow.    So there is no real chance of Rennie coming to coach the hapless Springboks.  
White will not solve the problem of a totally hopeless game plan playing 10 man rugby.
The whole doom and gloom situation seems to be continuing.      

I totally agree Mike...I'm sorry to burst the bubble but such things are wishful thinking...the problem with this country is we tend to be ostrich's with our heads in the sand...we dream about rainbows but there is no pot of gold at the end of it...we need change everywhere and the resolve and guts to do it...we have weak and corrupt leaders...who are in the jobs for their pockets...no integrity left in leadership...SA's too have become weak and apathetic and resigned.

Give me White any day over Coetzee. A conservative game plan is better than no game plan at all. Also, at least White has the wisdom to bring in people around him to prop up the areas where he is lacking as a coach.

I agree that JW is far better AC but so are many... but that's a trap...a band-aid solution over a wound that needs surgery...if not amputation.

Are you prepared to settle for temporary quick fixes that spell disaster in the long term...no that just spells more long term problems....all the sh..ite has to be cut out...the whole thing is rotten...it starts with the head.

I predict that Japan's and Italy's victory is only the beginning of bigger surprises...at the rate we are going one or 2 minnows could send us home in next WC...believe me...some minnows are growing fast if you follow rugby internationally... and they want us and believe me as we stand now they can do it because they have spirit and have improved.

 Cape Town - An apparent hopeful Springbok fan hacked the Wikipedia page of Dave Rennie, after the New Zealander was linked with the Bok head coaching role.

A newspaper report at the weekend indicated that SA Rugby was interested in replacing Springbok coach Allister Coetzee with the current Chiefs mentor.

According to Rapport, work has already begun behind the scenes to look at possible candidates to replace the embattled Coetzee, whose Springboks won only four of 12 Tests in 2016.

The possible appointment of Rennie, who led the Chiefs to two Super Rugby titles, clearly has a South African rugby fan excited about the future.

Wikipedia allows users to edit biographies and for a short while on Tuesday, Rennie had his future predicted (see image below).

Under Rennie’s biography, it read that he became Springbok coach in 2017 and "brought back a level of pride that had disappeared under the coaching of Allister ‘Toetie’ Coetzee."

It also mentioned a change in selection policy by SA Rugby and that Rennie would for the next decade lead the Boks to “klap” England, Australia and New Zealand, as well as claim two Rugby World Cup titles.

Former flyhalf Naas Botha would go on to call it “the greatest team turnaround of all-time”.

The new information regarding Rennie was later removed by Wikipedia.
