These two 20 year olds had great games at lock over the weekend. de Jager gets better and better and one has to ask how the hell he missed the Baby Bok squad last year. Steph du Toit had a massive game, the kid is physically imposing on the charge and in the clearouts.

Given how good Bekker was and how good we know Etzebeth is, our lock department is looking well covered.

Add other youngsters like Paul Willemse, JA Marais, Bresler, Ruan Botha, Peet Marais, Jaques du Plessis and Bulbring to the equation and the depth deepens. We just now also need to make sure we secure the services of overseas based youngsters like Quinn Roux, Carl Wegner and Ettienne Oosthuizen.

Old man Flip at 27, is having a good season as well and by all accounts the Baby Bok locks this year will be of a high standard.

The lock cupboard is looking healthy

Steff did look good on Saturday.....but probably felt he was playing school rugby again, for all the opposition the Rebs provided. I'm looking forward to seeing him against some tougher opposition, away from the warm support of his home ground. He may still be a year away./

Agreed - they both did well. S du Toit especially impressive - seems more athletic than De Jager. Definite logjam at the lock position - it will be impossible to keep all those youngsters happy with Bekker and Etzebeth locked in. There is bound to be more overseas attrition.

There should be a senior developmental Bok side ("B" side if you will) - something that creates more roster spots, keeps these boys interested and earmarked for future Springbok inclusion. I think there would be a host of second tier nations that would welcome a tour from this type of side.

Saffex

I must agree with you on the lock situation.  I am impressed by Du Toit and always said he is one to watch.   De Jager was also impressive - and he outplayed Thorne completely in the Higlanders game.

I must tell you that youngsters not playing for the so-called Rugby schools - never make it into Craven Week or Under 20 teams.    De Allende was one of those as well.   That probably is the reason why a player like De Jager was not selected last year as well.

Insofar as the Springbok selections are concerned - if Meyer has any sense he should have them in the squad for the June tests and give them each a few minutes playing time each.   That would avoid them being grabbed by overseas clubs or national teams.
