De Villiers makes himself unavailable for tests until further notice.
Domingo is fired
2 days before that, de Villiers announces he is available now for all 3 formats.
Am I the only one with suspicions?

I think the problem started at the WC when Domingo buckled under pressure and forced a change to the team for the semi. That probably lead to a froze ion relationship between Domingo and De Villiers,
I must say the return of De Villieras would be a welcome move.
The other issue is how Markram is going to do as opening bat. That guy was captain of the team in which Malan played and Malan relocated to England where he was a thorn in the side for the Proteas. Domingo and the other lot in SA Cricket would not support Malan and he left SA - what a loss!!!!!
The lot is totally befuddled and can only go one way and that is down.

Now hang on a minute. AB is 33. How can his return be so good when there are so many young talented players who can be invested in for the future?

That was a question based on the principle. I'm constantly being told that we need to forget about the older players and invest in the young talent that we have in abundance. If we do not have a talented youngster now and have to rely on a 33 year old AB, how are we going to have any in two years time when he is 35? The last season that AB was of any value in the test side was in 2015, also two years ago, and we couldn't fill the void he left. What will change in the next two years?

Mike is perfectly correct on several counts with "I must say the return of De Villieras would be a welcome move."
I don't see AB holding out any future hotshot and I don't see any future hotshots of the future with flashing lights kicking the door down who can outperform AB, furthermore numerically he is but a single player which makes it physically impossible to hold out " many young talented players ."
As a matter of fact there was an attempt by the powers that be to blood new players on the Proteas last tour and it proved a dismal failure.
27 Sept 2017, 11:29#9
You keep on missing the point. When it suits the situation it is perfectly OK to chop "the old ballies". But when there "is no young talent that is kicking the door down", etc, etc it is also perfectly OK to rely heavily on "the old ballies" again. I have no issue with that principle at all and it might appear that I think that AB is old and over the wall but it is not.
The whole situation is due to the fact that nobody seems to care about the fact that there is this massive void which is not going to be filled. We have not even managed to fill the voids that GS, JK, Bouch and even the likes of Dale Steyn (one might add) have left. We have not filled the void that AB has left in the last two seasons. What are the chances of it being done in the next two seasons whIle they siphon the last few pints of blood out of AB? Zero. Even with a new national coach. Why would I say that? Because I still maintain that the development of young talent is not the job of the national coach. Not in cricket, nor in rugby nor in even sport. The national coach has to rely on what is available from the structures below national level and if that is up to shyte, there is not much that he can do.
I'm glad that Domingo is out of the way and I'm glad that AB is back, for the time being but is that going to sort our team out? No way. We are lucky to be high up in the test rankings thanks to the quality of the opposition. The Aus side is nowhere near the side it was a decade ago and neither are the England or the Indian sides.

Thank you, kindly. You've just answered your own question. Why is this so? As far as the Ozzies go, as an example it's only the senior batsman who are holding up the team.
Truth be told the quality of young players are not coming through, even though, and this will be a shock to you....there's plenty being done with under age international competitions as well as local competitions to get them up to standard. Still they fall short. Most recently there was a selected group of the top spin bowlers in South Africa sent to India for coaching purposes. I don't have an answer. There's more being done for young cricketers across the world than ever before and yet they fail to impress.
That is the point.
Viv Richards before he retired commented that the younger West Indian players weren't ready, his advice was ignored....the rest is history. The same can be said today.
Things are going to get a lot worse for the Proteas when Amla, Faf, Morkel and Philander retire.....all of them closing in on the middle 30's.
Young talent.....where are they?

Dunce - you must not have taken your stupid pills recently. Most posters say clearly that age is not the norm for selection - performance is. De Villiers is regarded by most people as one of the best batsman and fielders in the world and if he keeps up performing his return is a bonus. How the hell do you say he will not be performing dunce?
There is always voids in teams when under-performing players are kept on beyond their sell-by dates - so what the hell is this point you are making.
It is not a case of keeping on selecting him in a sport which is not a contact sport like rugby and the rugby layers who have been criticized on the past has been the fact that they were under-performing and still selected.
27 Sept 2017, 12:14#12
It is not the amount of competitions that is important. It is the quality of the players in those competitions.
This is my point, and many would not like what I am about to say. It is the way that things are developing. Discipline and respect has flown out the back door. Youngsters are made heroes prematurely. They are put on pedestals, not because of what they could achieve. Even that -what they could achieve - is not based on anything but opinion. A young Jacques Kalisz would not have made it past three seasons in modern day cricket because in his early years he simply did not live up to the expectations. But that aside. Youngsters, IMHO, do not need to graft hard and put in the hard work to get to the top anymore. And then, worst of all, they believe in this shyte and then they want to receive the same amount of respect that a Ponting or a Warne or a McGrath or a Shaun Pollock or a Alan Donald or a Graeme Smit or, or, or received at the height of their careers.
And you know what p!sses me off even more? It is the fact that it is our generations who have allowed this crap to happen. Our generation "did not want our kids to suffer the same hardships that we suffered". BS. That is what made those big sportsmen and women big. The fact that they got farkall on a silver platter.
That is why there are so little young talent who are knocking down doors.

Mike
It's a blatant lie to accuse me of being involved in the "ou ballie" debate. I've never had that much time to waste.
Outside of that debate I did call for the selection of Mackram above Stephen Cook and Heino Kuhn.
Let's not forget what happened to future young talent when Stiaan Van Zyl made his debut, so it's not like there hasn't been an attempt to give the youngsters a go....fact is none of then are any good and the decent ones have taken off.
27 Sept 2017, 13:10#14
Ou Maaikie, you have missed the boat once again. I'm not even going to try and show you were you went off the rails except for telling you to revisit my post and forget for a minute that it was me who posted it. Look at what I said about the last season that AB delivered in TESTS. Then go check his TEST stats since 2015. I will even help you out with a link to his test batting stats by year. http://howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/PlayerYears.asp?PlayerID=3241
Once again, if they haven't been able to fill the voids left by the players that I have mentioned in more than two years and they haven't filled the one left by AB in the last two seasons, then how the hell are they going to do it in the next two or three years while they are leaning heavily on AB, huh? How?
Once again. I have nothing against AB and have always been a huge fan of him as a batsman. As a captain and/or a WK? Nah. Not that big a fan.

Three posts and in every single one of them it's everyone else who misses the point.....strange don't you think? Or perhaps, just maybe, you have no point apart from wanting young talent to walk over hot coals or sent off to Kamp Staaldraad which I strongly suspect is the case.
27 Sept 2017, 14:12#16
Or maybe I'm dealing with two blunderheads. Let me try and make it simple. AB has practically been absent on the test scene since the end of 2015. His average for 2015 and previous seasons were above 50. In 2016 it fell to below 25 and in 2017 he hasn't played test cricket. He is 33 and is turning 34 in Feb. If we are lucky we can get another two or three years out of him, which is why I keep on talking about the last two years and the next two years.
As I said a few times now, we haven't been able to replace him from our available talent pool, then how the hell are we going to do that in the next two or three years while we are relying on him? Just tell me that. Neither you nor Ou Maaikie have been able to tell me and you keep on side stepping that question by hammering on other shyte. Can you blame me for insisting that you are missing the point that in trying to make?
27 Sept 2017, 14:16#17

Fool, you fail to realise that the point you're making is applicable to close to half the current Protea team not just AB alone, and even if there were a succession plan I've repeatedly told you that none of the future talent is upskilled enough to replace them......does that register with you?
If it doesn't and I expect it won't......name your replacements and state your succession plan.
On the other hand don't bother, you remain as always....a bore.

Ahhh at last the penny is starting to drop. Remember how I listed a number of players who haven't been replaced? Go check. They are there. You see all of this crap is a culmination of the kak that happened when the politicians got involved post 1994. It did not start yesterday or last week or two years ago.

Hell, earlier you said that the quality of players across all cricketing nations is not what it used to be......remember that?
Now suddenly it's the politicians fault....is it the politicians fault in India, Australia and England where you claim the quality of players has fallen as well?

Something snapped in de Villiers when he made the comment about too much cricket before the T20WC.....he hasn't been the same player since. But in the meantime nobody has emerged.....much the same as in our rugby. Seems the fans are trapped in the purgatory they have been yelling for....stick with Moz.
