Australian rugby team coach Robbie Deans has been released from his two-year contract six months early, according to theSydney Morning Herald.

The Herald has reported that Ewen McKenzie will coach the Wallabies to the 2015 Rugby World Cup, with an official announcement tomorrow.

The departing Reds head coach has seen off a powerful challenge from Brumbies coach Jake White to take the top job.

A Tri-Nations title in 2011 is the lone prize for the Wallabies, even though he is the longest-serving leader in Australia's rugby history.

After nearly six years as coach, there has been strong speculation he would be replaced after Wallabies collapsed again on Sunday, losing 41-16 to the Lions. It follows regular Bledisloe Cup defeats and the last World Cup semifinal loss against the All Blacks.

His record stands at 74 tests with 43 wins, 2 draws and 29 losses - a 58.1 per cent success rate.

The Wallabies' next Test match is against the All Blacks in Sydney on August 17 in the first match of The Rugby Championship.

Nuked kiwi its as I said it would be - the Ozzies would not appoint another foreign coach and a loss agaisnt teh Lios would be the end for Deans.  Deans in any event has had a long spell and it is time for a change.

The loading of the crusties with all blacks via the central contracting system may have led to us all having more of an opinion of Deans than was warranted?

So as not to overplay their hand it looks like the tactic is changeing and the chiefs are getting the abs?

I expected that this would happen - but I do not think it would solve the problems of Australian Rugby at all. There are deficiencies in the Wallaby team that a new coach will not be able to solve. Maybe the Stormers should try and recruit Deans as a coach and they would do ten times better than the present dunce they have can do. Looking at the Aussie teams and the franchises - the number of game breaking players are extremely limited. The pool have some top players in Genia, Moore, Folau and Mogg, but for the rest their players are average performers. And then here are problematic players like Beale, O'Connor, Ioani and even Cooper - that can be brilliant at times - but not really conducting themselves all that well - mostly off the field, but often enough on the field as well. Dean paid the price of a losing side - and that is logical as well -but his resources were limited and his successor may end up I an even worse siruation.

No surprise here. Was inevitable. At least with this happening now the new coach has a little time to settle in his position before the World Cup. A good move that I m sure Redsman will be very glad to hear about?

It would be interesting to see what McKenzie can do. I don't rate him the best coach but he is more capable for the job than the other non foreign coaches in Aus. The wallabies was lacking in a lot of areas that Deans needed to sort out before but failed. I think the forward pack needed to be developed better the front row in particular, I thought Deans Made a huge mistake by not including Jesse Mogg to start in at least two tests against the lions, Mogg has been the most impressive Aus fullback in S15. Deans had a successful record when coaching the Crusaders but coaching at a higher level wasn't the right choice for the team management. The same could be said about McKenzie. If the wallabies play the same in the RC they would get demolished. As a Bok supporter I want to see the Wallabies play better, it would make the RC more competitive and interesting.

the wallabies play non aussie footy simple as that. deans never understood the aussie way like jake did but it doesnt matter because ewan does. watching aussies moving the ball back and forth running back into pockets of forwards and doing all the running behind the gainline shows there was no plan or game patterns it was a really big mess. he tried to mold the wallabies into a forward pick and drive team like some new zealand teams but it just isnt our game. yeah there are issues like the scrum but it could be worse its not like south africans are great scrummagers and your lineout is only okay now so you see its not so bad plus australia has much better backs and loosies than south africa so i say ewan has every damn chance to make this work if he does it the wallaby way!

cooper will be the happiest, as this was the only way he could get back into the wallabies team, after all, deano and none of the other OZ spXV coaches wanted him there, only ewan the stay puff marshmallow man did.

ewans going to have a tough job ahead of him, especially as he comes from a very pro reds background, so we have probably seen the last of micheal hooper as gill will now be in the equaiton as the wallabies No7 frontrunner, though thats not a bad option TBH, but still hooper was australias best last year, and then pocock is still to return to frame too.
i wonder how much of a boost medicore players like the faainga twins, micheal harris, dom shipperly will get in their international career, cos if ewans not careful, he could alienate the other franchises players and effect morale.

all of a sudden im looking forward to the bledisloe this year, not cos i think we will lose, but time to start debunking some predictions.

deano should return to NZ and coach the hurricanes.

Ihi, are you delusional? With the forwards we have fronting up now like Coenie and co, our scrum will be just fine. A hell of a lot stronger than that school boy display from the wallabies this weekend. Our line-out was shook by our two locks leaving at the same time. With Etzebeth and Du Toit/Bekker there, our lineout will be back to full strength especially when you consider our taller loosies.

Our backs are man for man, better than the Aussies these days with exception of Genia. Aussies have too many "ball players" but not enough punch in the backs. I would have Steyn over Bieber. Bieber cant control a game! Habana over Ioane. Records speak for themself and Habana can catch. JP and Folau cancel each other out. JJ is a lot more exciting than AAC. Jan is simply better than him at his age. JDV is a much more accomplished player than Lealifano, McCabe or the ever injured Barnes. Willie and Beale are as exciting as each other except Willie knows how to behave himself!

Only time the Aussies beat the Boks is when some shady shit goes on or Bryce is near the game.

Glad to see the Aussies picking another small minded, blustering, nasty type.....who believes in Quade Cooper . These inadequate chaps tend to implode taking their teams with them.

FINALLY GOT RID OF DEANS..........!!!! Happy days!!! And whats even better is that they've given the reigns to Link.... Think what you all like - but he is an excellent coach with excellent people skills and yes Aussie depth is never going to be that of ABs or Boks with Rugby League so strong but he can get the best out of players who may not get the accolades. I have no doubt he's gonna give you saffas and ABs a good run this coming RC.His major coaching strength is his unpredictability and tactical gameplay - something Deans severely lacked for the last 2-3years. Mozart I don't understand your animosity other than you must have wanted Jake to be aussie coach - bottom line is Ewen is solid and he has the backing on the players and supporters of rugby in this country - something Deans lacked majorly. Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

T'was all he could do was to fall on his sword. Things could' ve been different if he'd taught the hapless Aussies how to tackle,

What a useless bunch of convicts he had to work with though and as they say ....You can't make honey out of dogshit....

@kiwidogpissbeer - canes v highlanders showed us how to tackle the other night hey.... what was that 100points in 80 mins....? Fact is Reds and rest of Aussie teams have OWNED the kiwis in the SXV (that's 15 because I know you lack education) this year. Deans last 2 years was a complete failure and the fact he only won one TNs in 6 years on the back of the Reds SXV win shows how hopeless he was. Typical kiwi. Anyway looking forward to silence coming from you whingers when aussies smoke your overrated cheats in RC this year.

Redsman I do not doubt that McKenzie is a good coach - but one will have to see what selection criteria he would use in this case. He will have to find a balance between selecting Reds players and players from other franchises. If he for instance play Gill ahead of Hooper and Pocock - he will be wrong. He will also have to be objective about Cooper - who has had thus far a yo-yo performance on test level. I doubt not that McKensie would select Cooper - but will he drop him if he does not perform? McKenzie may have the same problem so clearly illustrated by Meyer. A Bulls contract above everything else - will it in Australia means a Red contract above everything else? That would be an interesting one to see and one hopes that he can steer clear of that pit fall. If he does not - he is not going to last as coach.

Well let's face it ... you can take a horse to water but getting it to drink is another story.

Deans is a very good coach. His record speaks for itself ... no way anyone else coulda done much better than what was achieved these last 5 years with the tantrum throwing ozzies.

Sure gonna laugh my ass off at dumbass redman when "Link" is shown up as a chump.

Welcome back Quade ... no way you would have played international rugby again ... it takes talent ... it seems there's a non merited selection policy in Oz as well.

I see ol 'link' has already laid down the law and threatening not to pick guys who don't behave themselves.... Now i don't mean to be funny but I struggle to see these guys been fearful for their positions with the current depth of Aussie talent.

Deans had to go, he tried and shouldn't be too down, Aussie is alot better than when he took over imo. I also happen to think it might be Deans fault ol Jake didn't get the job... I think the feeling is that Aussies need an Aussie even though Jake is the better coach.

Allblacknblue I must say I agree with your comments above. I can see the reason for Jake White not being appointed. The Aussies are really funny - they have inherited the way Americans look at themselves. "We are so good - we cannot speak to highly of ourselves". Aussies are everything - the rest of the world are just not up to their standard. I have never thought White had a chance in this case - his performances and background is eminently suitable - but he is not an Aussie and that is it.

I am so happy Deans is no longer coach of the Wallabies! It was always awkward having a former All Blacks being coach of the Wallabies - it is not right!

Now that he is gone, there is order in the universe once more!

PLUS poetic justice for us Sir Graham Henry's supporters to see Dingo Deans relationship with the ARU and Wallabies fans sour the way it did! I do not think he will ever coach the All Blacks!

@Hakwa agree entirely. It wasn't right that a kiwi coached the wallabies and probably DID sour the way for Jake. But reality is Ewen is the right man and the right time for the job. His record in SXV speaks for itself and his ability to get the best out of players is a real winner. With reds he has BEATEN kiwi team 15/18 times - 83.33% winning ratio against kiwis... I think that translates into good opportunity for wallabies to take it to ABs... Yes he probably will stick with core combos from reds BUT hes a levelled headed guy and frankly he will pick the best guy for the job considering hes from Victoria theres no real prblm UNLIKE the bulls v rest. ON saying this though Bulls are the best Saffa team so would make sense to have a certain preference for combos from there. The Reds have been best in the last 3-4years in Aussie rugby too - so makes sense to use them. Re QC - no question he'l be in the squad and no one other 10 in Australia is better atm - I wouldn't be at all surprised in brumbies 10 (Toomua) also in mix for Wallabies 10 too............... Anyway look forward to beldisloe considering Link's record against kiwis 15/18 @ 83.33%!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring it!

reds have only one title...wooopeee, not a great record, wins over NZ sides don't mean anything if he cant claim title that speaks for Australia cant deal with the big games. After this round of Australian teams looked terrible if I was McKenzie I would be very concerned. Cant see any thrashing from Wallabies not in this generation. Link has not been head coach for Wallabies NZ is REALLY looking forward to welcoming drop link to the real world of test rugby ...where SR is completely irrelevant. like deans found out.

I'm sure the ab's will be shaking in their boots red, I laughed at the QC intercept try today... Even I read that from a mile out.

-

SR means nothing next month. set piece becomes alot more important at test level and guess what buddy.... No body is scared of the aussie set piece, not even the scots or Irish as you probably already know hahaha.

-

Test sides need fly halfs with brains and QC couldn’t be a dumber shit if he tryed, Genia is a class act and QC is nothing without him. You watch, both the kiwis and saffas will force him into stupid decisions and get his team on the back foot.
