"To be fair I think they need to lose," he told New Zealand's Radio Sport, saying he saw similarities to 2007 when the All Blacks crashed out of the World Cup at the quarter-finals.

Henry coached the All Blacks to the 2011 World Cup after they lost their last two games going into the tournament.

He was also at the helm in 2007, when they went into the championship with a rich vein of form similar to the current side.

As the top-ranked team on the planet the All Blacks are expected to win every game and the World Cup and "the reality is that's hugely difficult", said Henry, speaking a year to the day before hosts England play Fiji at Twickenham in the opening match of the next World Cup.

"The odd hiccup here and there gives you the opportunity to re-analyse where you are at, look at everything, turn over every stone, make sure you're on the right track. If you don't do that you might miss something," he added.

The 2007 World Cup side lost only three times in the 32 Tests they played leading into the tournament where, after an easy round of pool matches, they were beaten by France in their first knockout game.

The current All Blacks have not been beaten in their last 21 outings and have lost only once in 35 Tests since they beat France 8-7 in the 2011 final.

Henry said a loss before going to England next year might do them good.

"I think (a loss) galvanises people, it makes them re-analyse where they're at and make sure they're on the button," he explained.

"Because I think there's some similarities to 2007 here."

The All Blacks play Argentina, Tonga, Georgia and Namibia in pool matches next year and if they top their group as expected they will likely face Ireland, France or Italy in the quarter-finals.

Along with the All Blacks, Henry rates England, South Africa, Ireland and Australia as 2015 title contenders.

I dont neccessarily agree with Henry. This ab side is different, they have very high expectations and standards. I dont neccessarily agree that a team needs to lose before you can wins. Or see a teams faults. You can do that while winning. Abs hv already hd some close games, games you well see at the wc, but they just find a way to win. Same accord teams who win wcs, are only good for that three week periord. Then suck for 4 years so whats the point of difference. Nz are consistently the best side in the world, for four years leading to the wc and afterawards, regardless of NZ performance at those select Wcs. To me thats more important. Seems everyone puts so much emphasis on the RWC, but its not neccessarily the be end and end all imo. Opposed to that 2007 side Nz has matured and evolved, and has actually closed out close pragmatic games like 8-7 final, Eng games, 14-10 over SA last weekend etc.

Yeah I don't get how Henry can say loosing Galvinizes a side. Really I always thought Winning does? Lol and Loosing causes depression. At this stage making any predictions is very premature. Regardless if people say oh NZ are overrated, they are cheats, their wins are heavily ref assisted e.t.c. It all does not matter, when your at the top everyone wants to beat you, and try to spin why your the best, and that is the way it should be. And I think the Abs like it like that. IT is a 3-4 week tournament, anyone on their day can beat anyone, WC history has clearly shown that. I agree with Henry the favs should be NZ, Eng, SA, Oz, and Ireland, and maybe France (depending on what side shows up).

I also think a loss would be good for the All Blacks. The Eden park Bledisloe would have been perfect but I will settle for the third one. No harm done to anyone that way.

As a Bok fan i must disagree. For me it would have been very good for AB rugby if they had lost by 8 tries to 0 in Wellington over the weekend

Not me , nothing succeeds like success ! A near miss is good enough and the guys have all lost the odd game in the S15s so they know how bad that feels !

It's coming the combination of RAWS and luck is not sustainable. But the real question is whether it would be good for their fans for the abs to lose.Of course it would very healthy as they are way too arrogant. Think ou saSUE for one but he is not alone of course.

No, defeat may be acceptable for some but as in war  its never good for the loser .How would losing to say SA make things better ? Would it light the desire for revenge somehow ? seeing as how it would have to be next year to have all that revenginess bottled up for the meeting in the RWC with the side wot needs to be  revenged upon it makes zero sense.Baendipsh!t , your an expert on being an utter loser how does one cope ?

I believe w hat Sir GH was trying to say is that he hopes other Teams can keep finding weaknesses in this ABs Team before the RWC (if that makes sense) so the weaknesses can be corrected. We do not want any blind spots.

Hacked waaaugh overweening pride and believing the hype ala warped DUD the spud peeler is a blind spot of note.
It's all inevitable. abs going down and hopefully the rankings will thereafter reflect true rugby ability.

i agree 100% with warhammer, take all that loser talk of a loss is good for us and stick it up ur a55.

that level of mediocrity is best left for lower tier teams like the Boks and wallabies who are constantly battling for the honour of being the team to sit beside daylight which is the gap between the All Blacks and the rest of the world.

RWCs are overrated, and i would be disgusted if the All Blacks dont approach every test match with a RWC final attitude, cos we are the only nation in the world who does.

whiule i love ted, his opinion is waaaaay off, the 2007 RWC quarter final has been remembered for some dodgy calls, the only game in the world where a player was yellow carded for obstruction, that infamous forward pass etc, but henry cops more of the blame IMO.

he left piri weepu at home instead gambling on leonard and his impressive super rugby form.

robinson had been injured for all of the RWC and was selected despite not being 100% fit.

he started carter who was injured.

rico gear was left a home.

mils muliaina was our 13, while snake was on the bench

all those were factors in the loss to france, and all cause we let complacency set in and underestimated the french.
barnes might have had a real dodgy shocker, but henrys mistakes was far more detrimental to the All Blacks cause.

hansen is on the correct path, win everything we can and come the 2015 RWC, all will be right.

remember that the RWC is still ints infancy stages, there have only been 7 so far, after 20 RWCs, the All Blacks will have dominated the RWCs, like we have everything else since the birth of rugby in NZ, and its not cause of that BS a loss is good for us, its cos we want to win everything.

Beeno: we came up with the fictional RAW category to give you some hope given that you have to deal with so many loses by the Boks. Are you strong enough/ mentally stable enough to acknowledge this now?

Sasu you've hit the nail on the head there concerning the 2007 RWC. I always thought Weepu and Rico Gear were a cut above the rest during that period.

Hi there JW your sense of humour is always appreciated and stands in vivid contast to the wee little warped DUD
Reading between the lines it looks like Sitr Graham (Who was schooled by Jake as you will recall) is preparing the nz public for the abs losing to the Boks. He sees the writing on the wall.
Given a fair ref and 50% of the luck the Boks should easily account for the pap abs!
So kbbs please take note of what Sir Graham is warning you about.
