It seems Hougaard was removed from the Supersport commentary team because a certain minister contacted Supersport regarding some tweets that Hougaard made regarding transformation, so this minister wanted Hougaard removed from the rugby panel, which Supersport duly did.

Talk about harsh treatment.

Here is Hougaard's post regarding the whole incident:

"This is with sadness that I write this to you. I have had so many queries and questions why I am not working with supersport anymore or on the Monday show with the Legend Kobus Wiese."

"And people have been so supporting and willing me on to get back on the horse.! Firstly I must say sorry to whom I disappointed. And especially the whole of South Africa. I love rugby and was my life. And will always be part of my life. And my biggest passion lies with young kids and helping them and molding them Holistically for the challenges of sport at the highest level. Especially in rural areas."

"Working for Supersport and doing commentary, it came quite naturally. And the love for the work and brand was growing every week and working with absolute geniuses, legends and great people. And believe with my whole heart that will again be part of something bigger and will leave a legacy. If that is with Supersport or any other medium or media. Or creating our own content with Virtual Productions. Time will tell. But the fire in me is still burning enough that I won't give up on giving back. And replacing my passion for the game for Television."

"So not to keep you in the dark to much longer. I did think that the issue will look after it's self. But unfortunately not. Without mentioning names. I made a comment or let's say had a few on transformation and the negative influence it could have on our rugby structures. Not going into the debate in depth. And not to do with the Springboks whatsoever."

"A springbok deserves to play for his country. And a minister mailed Supersport taking me of TV completely. I will always have a fair opinion and will stand by what will make South Africa n force in World Rugby again. It is a shame that it cost me my job. But my intentions was pure , understanding everybody's backgrounds and upbringing. But more than anything."

"If you have played at the top you see nothing other than talent. The best structures and by what cost you will again be a fearful force whenever anyone play the mighty Springboks. That's it in n nutshell. So hopefully this will answer most of your questions on why? I hope so."

"Hopefully I have made the right decision in writing this personally because have had numerous calls from the media over the situation. But scared it might get written out of context. And my heart not being accurately captured in this whole traumatic situation."

"Just a little drama to end off. ????

Thanks for everyone's support. Big things still lies ahead.

We will talk rugby when our paths crosses."

Rugby has given me so much. Now next in line. Enjoy and have fun.

All my Love.

 Derick Hougaard

I also see now that Supersport are denying that  anything like this ever happened.

but ... but ... but ... Coetzee selected his side on merit. How dare HouGat say it's race based selections ... right, DA?

Paige is there purely on merit. So is Bongi and Beast.

The absolute wizardry of Rhule fully deserves a Bok selection .... right, DA? And that Oupa ... is he something or what, huh?

Thank the gods Coetzee brought Chilliboy back into the mix ... and that Leyds is vastly superior to Combrinck. He's a better defender and has a far better kicking game, ... right DA?

HouGat deserves to be fired ... the low life racist.

Cape Town - Civil rights organisation AfriForum on Monday wrote an open letter to SuperSport requesting the pay-channel’s policy on freedom of speech to be put in writing. This follows media reports that SuperSport will no longer be making use of former Springbok flyhalf Derick Hougaard’s services after comments he made on Twitter regarding transformation in sport. SuperSport denied the rumours behind their decision. AfriForum’s letter was aimed at Gideon Khobane, the CEO of SuperSport. AfriForum’s CEO, Kallie Kriel, wrote in the letter that there was uncertainty over SuperSport’s position on freedom of speech. “The conclusion that can be made is that SuperSport won’t tolerate any criticism of the governing party’s political agenda,” a post on AfriForum’s official website reads. In the statement, Kriel commented: “If this is the case, it boils down to a gross violation of freedom of speech.”

Any idea what he actually tweeted? I am not on twitter. I tried to find it on his twitter page, but couldn't.

Does anyone have a copy of the exact tweets he made? It certainly sounds like a communist style of government that is in place in South Africa.
Anyone that works for Supersport, or wants to work for SuperSport will totally avoid any topic that is related to trans quota-ation

What a crock, and CC, you know absolutely jack sh!t on how and when players are selected for national duty.

If you knew what happened behind the scenes, you may just one day change your thought process on that.

I would never... ever.... waste my time with you on this issue, that I do know.

Actually reading Chippo's comments, I would say that this is hate speech. (Which is not covered under freedom of speech. He has tagged his employer (supersport)- which is totally stupid- as if they are endorsing his opinion.

It is actually quite offensive to white South Africans that are not Afrikaans. Rugby is not solely Afrikaans, just like it is not solely white.
I would agree that "some" black politicians are helping to  screwing up rugby- but certainly would not generalize this to the whole population.

Well DA ... spare me a little of your precious time and explain Paige's selection then.

Oh what the hell ... you might as well give us your insight into why Bongi's there and for that matter Oupa and Rhule.

I'm all ears.

derick hougaard? @derickhougaard Mar 16

In any sport, business ex. If you decide not to go on merit. You won't be the best. Or it will take years to get to a level where you could.
