Hard working flank forward Jean Deysel is the latest Cell C Sharks player to confirm his departure from the franchise at the end of the Vodacom Super Rugby season.
One of three vice-captains appointed at the start of the season by director of rugby Jake White, Deysel follows former Sharks Currie Cup winning captain Keegan Daniel to Japan. They will be joined at the departure terminal at King Shaka International Airport at the end of Super Rugby by Charl McLeod, who is heading to French club Grenoble.
Deysel has joined Japanese top league club, Toyota Verblitz, on a two year deal, and in joining them will bring to an end a Sharks career that started in 2007 and has now spanned 117 caps.
“Jean will always be regarded as a team man who gave 110% whether in training or during a match. He has been a loyal servant of Sharks rugby and will be missed,” said Sharks CEO John Smit in a statement.
“His departure is a huge loss to the Sharks, but we respect his decision and wish him and his family the very best in Japan.” Deysel said it was a tough decision to leave and added that he was “eternally grateful to this franchise for their belief, support and guidance over the years”.
However while Deysel appears to be departing with the blessing of the Sharks, the announcement of his departure should nonetheless be disquieting to Sharks fans as there have been persistent rumours that while the results have been good this season it hasn't always been plain-sailing within the camp and several other players may also be considering heading away after Super Rugby.
