  • Cape Town - Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers is upset with what he feels is too white a Springbok team currently playing in the Rugby Championship.

The Boks have failed to win their last three games in the competition, with a 21-11 loss to New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday leaving them in second-last position on the log.

But De Villiers feels it's not only the team's poor results on the field turning the fans against Heyneke Meyer's charges, but also the racial composition of the side.

Speaking to Ballz Radio on Monday, De Villiers lashed out at Meyer's apparent lack of interest in selecting players of colour.

"It's just the little things that bother me. We need to know in what country we do live. And at this moment we are turning a lot of black people against ourselves by making the team white and nobody will talk about these things but I just have to. And that is what... actually we're breaking up our country again," said De Villiers.

The former Bok mentor also questioned the fact that there's no existent quota system in place anymore. He singled out a few players of colour which he feels should have been given more chances this season.

"We do have a lot of great (black) players who can make a difference. You have Gio Aplon - here in Cape Town - who can make a hell of a difference. You've got Juan de Jongh, and exciting player who can make a difference. We never played (Siya) Kolisi - who's now injured, he was never given a chance.

"There are a lot of players like Chiliboy Ralepelle. He was the one guy who can make that 10% difference that you need from a replacement to come onto the field.

"We're turning all the black support against the Springboks. Wherever I go I hear people talking negative about the Springboks," said De Villiers.

Saturday's Bok team against the All Blacks did feature three players of colour (Zane Kirchner, Bryan Habanaand Tendai Mtwarira) in the starting line-up, while De Jongh was among the substitutes.

De Villiers started his tenure as Bok coach in 2008 under a cloud of controversy, with SARU admitting the decision wasn't made purely on rugby reasons, but rather political. Back then Meyer was the preferred candidate to succeed the World Cup winning coach Jake White

De Villiers led the Boks to a series victory over the British and Irish Lions in 2009, as well as the Tri-Nations title in that same year. However, things started unravelling the next two years and his time with the national team ended when the Boks crashed out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage to Australia last year.

De Villiers is currently the director of rugby at the University of the Western Cape.

HAVE YOUR SAY: What did you think of former Bok coach Peter de Villiers’s views. Are you happy with the racial composition of the Bok team? Send your thoughts to Sport24.

Div did not play that many players of colour either.

He talked about transformation and that is why he got the job. However when the pressure built from losing, he allways reverted to the team that Jake White built. I think that Jake white had the most players of colour in one test against Australia.

I think allot of people in South Africa are over the selection based on race. Div got the job on this basis. If Div had to rebuild a team like Hieneken Meyer it would have been a disaster, maybe as bad a Straueli

The reality of the situation is that most professional rugby players in South Africa are white afrikaners. As an English speaking South African from Durban, I do not think we could have a competitive Sharks team without having some Afrikaans players.

If quotas are going to be taken seriously it should be at the feeder levels, from schools and clubs.

Div the last person to get a position in SA Rugby with respect to their colour ..WAS YOU.

We don't care what color the players are as long as they are the best players currently.

You guys are so obsessed about colour that you lose all perspective of class not arse.

We as SA Rugby fans are interested in winning irrespective of who we play...now go teach you students that sport is played to win as well as enjoy.

You transformation coach......

Also your comment about the people you mix with are negative about the Springboks because their are not enough black players in the squad.

Remember...garbage in garbage out.

Try mixing with people that are comfortable with their colour and are educated...perhaps it will open you colour coded eyes and you might even learn something.

i actually think that gio aplon can add a lot of value to the team, but PDV is such a dickhead.

this could be actually good for meyer, cos when folks realise that PDV is talking smack about him, they will rally behind the embattled Boks coach

Peter did in fact try to force the POC issue in selections. He had Mujati, Bobo, Adi, Jantjes, Beast, Conradie, Odwa, Dollie, Rose, Newman, Chavangha, Nokwe, Habana, JP, Steenkamp, Chiliboy and many, many more in those early years. But they all failed. What he had to begrudgingly concede was that there are very few talented black players compared to white! That's just the reality. Recall how in 2007 Peter boasted that there were 80 black players in South Africa who were better or as good as the white players in Jake's team? Not so easy when you have to actually select those players and play top test nations.

This guy was, is and always will be, a complete doos! Nobody cares what he has to say, and nobody takes him seriously, because most of his teams had the same level of "black" representation as this one of Meyer's.

Voetsek you fool, and I am glad you have a job now that equals your actual level of expertise...doing something or other for Stellenbosch or whoever it is that he now works for..... You are not good enough to coach ANY Country, Super Rugby, Currie Cup or even vodacom cup side. Justice for four years of your stupidity!

 Good comment- "

braam.groenewald.39 - September 18, 2012 at 12:06 Report commentComments Policy   Lol. Does he not know that Chiliboy, Pietersen, Basson & Kolisi are injured? Or that replacing Habana/Kirchner with Gio will not alter the percentage? Did he not see Mvovo last week?

And did Pdiv himself not play Lambie over Kirchner & Aplon in the WC, Smit over Chili (infact Bissie was on the bench so Chili did not even feature in his 22).

It's easy talking from outside, but Divvie did little about all of this when he had the chance. 4 years he had as a political pawn to bring about transformation. He started his first game with 7 non-whites in his starting 15, and ended 4 years later with 3 in his 22. And that's his legacy.

Maybe he should look at his own progress before laying blame for turning black support against the Boks at others' feet.

his public rants and ignorant views and media flip flops did more damage for the non whites in rugby than any other politician or coach ever did. he alone put transformation back 20 years.

the comments by braam is pretty spot on. he must concentrate on rugby at UWC. they are so shit the field looks like it could have been in syria. so i may suggest olf pdiv stop taking his tik and start building some rugby. from what i heard at insiders he is pretty much flat broke so we may spot him in a caravan parked outside of UWC. so i think media 24 may have paid him for his 1c worth.
