Other than NZ teams who showed how rugby should be played, whenever there was a SA team was a nightmare.
It was with the hope that something better I tuned in on the Sharks - Rebels  game.     That optimism was dispelled soon enough when Esterhuizen got red-carded  for one of the worst spear tackles imaginable.   However,  the circumstances  was such that the tackle indicates complete and total  stupidy.   However, Esterhuizen cannot claim that a precedent was set by  Francois Steyn got redcarted under equally stupid circumsatnces
But as if that was not the worst situation, matters got even worse.   Late in the game Roux got it into his head the Matfield syndrome by neck wrestling with an opposing player.   We all know that happened in the Matfield case - an easy penalty conversion was sabotaged through a penalty turnaround.   In the case of Botha the awarding of a try to Reinach was destroyed by him.
The outcome of those two incidents forced me into asking the question in the heading.

It is not a question of brain. It is a question of mentality. Certain mentalities lead to certain behaviours.
Players going into the game with the mentality of breaking their opponent are more likely to turn out violent fouls. Especially when their opponents are more resilient than they used to be and no longer spooked by a harsh tackle.
