Cape Town - Springbok defence coach John McFarland says the centre combination of Frans Steyn and JP Pietersen worked well against the World XV and he's confident they will also pass the test against Wales in Durban on Saturday (17:05 kick-off).

Pietersen, who normally plays wing, was added to the midfield to partner Steyn.

You are a joke.  Steyn never was a longer term prospect if De Villiers and De Allende - he would have been lucky to survive the upcoming series - so the issue is clear - he had no chance in future and he walked out beforehand.  In any event - after his invisible performance on Saturday I  think that Serfontein would have played in the Welsh test in any event.    

Clever this is on the same level as you claiming Morne was transferred to Paris SG ....that Solomons was the Boks assistant  coach on Saturday....that Bakkies was scrumming behind the Beast.
You think Serfontein was going to play in any event, in spite the fact that McFarland, the Bok defensive coach says in the piece immediately above that he  is confident JP and Frans will also pass the test against Wales.

I think he may be following the fine example his Super Rugby coach demonstrated last season. He had a contract with the Brumbies and broke it without a second though when he was overlooked for Wallaby coach.

Steyn wanted the Bok 10 jersey. He's now thrown his toys just like his coach did and left with a trembling lower lip cause he's suddenly realized that he's just a filler in till the real rugby players (Jean and De Allende) return from injury.

He's sulky little child and should never have been in the squad in the first place.

It's wonderful to see him go.

 The secret is out about why Steyn departed from the squad.  It is apparently all about his SARU contract remuneration.   The story is that when the Boks assembled for the first training camp - Steyn arrived at the camp and had a heated argument on the issue and got into his car and drove off.
It is clear he only returned later on and sat out on the practical training program as he did when playing for the Sharks and then was selected for the Boks for Saturdays match, where he gave a decidedly sub-par performance.
When SARU did not want to meet his pay demands - he simply walked out.   To my mind it indicates that he has a superego way ahead of his own contributions - something like "I am so good I cannot speak too highly of myself".    
I am not surprised at the SARuU decision at all.   His performances over the last two years does not justify an increase in remuneration beyond the normal contractual  increases.   Last year he was even dropped by the Sharks to the bench for a number of games and this year - although retained by White - his performances were statistically worse than any other 12 in SA and not much better at 10.   SARU would have taken note of that - and the fact that he was at best a stand-in player for the Springboks - selected on experience and not performance - and decided not to meet his demands. 
Steyn will play for the Sharks until his Japanese contract commences in August and then decamp.   When he comes back he will be as "slap" as most of the Japanese Club players are on their return -  another Peter Grant in the making.

Frans Steyn's sensational 11th hour decision to withdraw from the Springbok squad currently in training for the Castle Lager Incoming Series is shrouded in mystery.

Steyn was on Tuesday quoted as "not wanting to be considered for the Boks' upcoming three Tests" and "wanting a break".

Frankly, had Steyn cited his long-standing injured knee as the reason for his "break", the rugby public would've fully supported - and understood - his decision.

Furthermore, had Steyn and the SARU management team sat down and discussed a "sabbatical" - much like those enjoyed in recent years by star All Blacks Richie McCaw and Dan Carter - everyone would've backed wrapping the star flyhalf-cum-centre in cotton wool some 15 months out from next year's Rugby World Cup.

Alas, not a single mention of "knee" or "sabbatical" in Tuesday's SARU press release...

Instead we're left with speculation. Plenty of speculation.

Suddenly reports of financial issues have surfaced, with the Volksblad website reporting Steyn's unhappiness over a promise (a broken promise presumably) that SARU had made to him when he returned from French club, Racing Metro, to play for the Sharks in 2012.

Although it remains unclear exactly what SARU's "promise" was, Steyn would be earning far less than he would've banked had he elected to remain in France. Quite why he decided to return to SA with SARU's policy of selecting overseas-based players, also remains a mystery.

Volksblad went on to write that Steyn and SARU officials got into an argument at the Boks' training camp in Durban a fortnight ago which resulted in Steyn getting into his car and leaving the camp.

The nett effect is that Steyn's departure has left the Bok backline in disarray mere days away from their opening Test of the year.

Already out injured are skipper Jean de Villiers, Damian de Allende, Juan de Jongh and Jaque Fourie, leaving the likely midfield pairing to be JP Pietersen and Jan Serfontein.

Pietersen is yet to play an official Test at centre, while Serfontein, for all his promise, has failed to live up to expectations at Super Rugby and international level to date.

Pietersen and Serfontein will face a likely baptism of fire against highly regarding Wales duo of Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies in Durban on Saturday. "

In another article the position as to his contract was clarified further,   He was shit poor since his return from France and wanted extra income - what a joke.   SARU is not going to pay extra to the poorest 12 in Super 15 because his name is Francois Steyn.  And he produced nothing at 12 on Saturday as well and was set to be further disgraced this coming Saturday - what a bullshitter that bugger is.   

So your source is the ever reliable Volksblad Website...forgive me if I take that with a pinch of salt.

You take other reports at face value and reject this one.  Forgive me - but you are a fraud in the worst sense of the word.

Even if this "report" is true, that it is all about money, if SARU lured him back with promises that they have not fulfilled and Steyn is out there putting his body on the line and playing with chronic knee issues, missing cartilage, in daily pain - I can see how he could get to the point regardless of his loyalty and love for the Boks where he had enough. What is clear is that no one - neither White, the Sharks, the Boks, Meyer - was going to give him rest and with a view towards the long term this could well be the choice that he should never have had to make .

I must say I saw a few Racing Metro games in 2012 and Steyn definitely was not really up to standard - much like Morne is now with Stade Francais.  Whether his contract would have been renewed is a major question - matter of fact there was a lack of top performance missing and it would have been unlikely.    
Matter of fact is that Steyn declared he wants to come back to play in South Africa.  That declaration could have been influenced by promises of SARU - but that is anyone's guess.  Any such promises would have had a performance clause attached to it - and that performance requirement was absent during the past two years.
He played 2 matches for the Sharks in 2012 and produced nothing of note - he played 5 matches for the Springboks and was poor in all five,   Got injured and was out of contention for the rest of the year.   Last year he came back from injury - seriously over-weight and unfit.  He played four matches for the Sharks and was then dropped to the bench.  Came back - played 1 and a half match and got injured - being out for the rest of the year.
This year he played all the matches for the Sharks - but statistically and on the field of play he varied from average to poor.  The newspaper hype would not convince SARU that he met any performance requirements to justify an increase in remuneration at this stage.
Yes - he was over-played by White - but that certainly was not prompted by performances on his part = more by reputation as a White protegee.  He would have had the sympathy of many if he said he cannot continue and need a break - but he did not.

frans was never a good 10 prospect, but he still had loads to offer IMO, especially in the centers or fullback.

at center he can be easily used as a second receiver option who just happens to boast the most powerful boot in the world.
his physicality means the Boks would have had a qualified crash baller which IMO is something every midfield needs.
plus his time at 10 for the sharks did show us glimpses of some classy passing games both the short and long variety, but important to note before mikey picks up his sniper gun, that IMO frans time at 10 with the sharks showed he dosent belong at 10 with the Boks, except over morne.

he was never needed for the likes of this under strength welsh team, so his presence shouldnt be missed.
