Donkey Potgieter heading to Japan?

Springbok loose forward Jacques Potgieter is set to become the latest player to join the exodus to Japan after news broke that he was busy negotiating a move to the Far East.

While Potgieter renewed his Vodacom Bulls contract until 2015 back in February, the Bulls confirmed they had been approached by Potgieter that he be given permission to negotiate with other clubs for a possible move away in the second half of the year.

The move would be similar to that of Wynand Olivier, who signed in Japan on the proviso that he returned for Super Rugby duty in February each year.

Potgieter, who has struggled to hold down a starting spot in the Bulls line-up this season, would effectively miss the Absa Currie Cup, joining a host of top players who choose not to play in the domestic competition but rather ply their trade overseas.

Already the Bulls have lost flyhalf Morne Steyn and lock Juandre Kruger, both of whom will be heading to France at the end of the season. Olivier is unlikely to play another season as well and should head back to Japan after the completion of Super Rugby.

“Any decision taken about Jacques is subject to approval from the Bulls board of directors,” Bulls High Performance manager Xander Janse van Rensburg told supersport.com.

Other prominent Boks heading abroad at the end of the season include Andries Bekker and Bryan Habana, with Bekker heading to Japan and Habana to France.

No way that Potgieter should have played for the boks last year. Given the depth that South Africa has at looseforward their were so many others that should have been ahead of him. The game in Mendoza against Argentina was the worst back row performance by any Springbok team in many a year- like back in the Strauelie era

This is the correct move for him, at the moment we have far better players in Arno Botha, Lappies Labuschagne and Rynardt Elstadt.

What is sad is that Ludeke used Jacques ahead of CJ Stander last year and now CJ has pissed off to Ireland.

CJ was a real talent and is a huge huge loss, Potgieter was always on the road to nowhere. There was a reason he remained hidden until he was 26 or so. He made an impression in his first few outings and was then exposed for being one dimensional and predictable.
