So getting away from Dave's weight, I decided to start a cool new thread.


Lets see how many double provincial / national South Africans we can think of... age group level does not count.

 I know that Peter Kirsten played for a team called the Kwaggas against the ABs, IIRC. Or was it the Kwagga/Barbarians.

To add to your list.

Lee Barnard played cricket and rugby (flyhalf) for both Tvl and N Tvl.
Kosie Venter played rugby and cricket for Freestate.
Kiwi Jeff Wilson played for the ABs and the Black Caps.
Her schelle Gibbs played Craven Week rugby for the WP. I actually saw him play Craven week against N Tvl. I am not too sure but I seem to recall that he played a game or two  for the WP as well.
Johan Marais N Tvl and Bok no 8 was a Springbok wrestler as well.
Ditto Gerrie Sonnekus.

 I mentioned it in another discussion some time ago.

Grant Esterhuizen was an SA Wrestler and SA judoka as well.
Jaques Olivier and Doppies Le Grange were also SA wrestling champs.

5. Naas Botha - Netball / softball  

Naas's brother Darius used to play rugby as wing for the Bulls - but something tells me he was also involved in ball room dancing.   He is/was a DRC minister.   Went to Pretoria for a meeting once and stayed at the Boulevard Hotel.   There was a wedding party on the Sunday evening and Darius was one of the top dancers.  Dutch Reform Church Minister?????
I seem to recollect that Gary Kirsten also used to play riugby.  I believe it was him who played under 21 for WP at flyhalf  in one of the weirdest incidents I ever saw on a rugby field.   Gary got the ball near the halfway line - put it behind his back and three Lions players went for him big time.   By the time the three tacklers got up after the tackle - WP had score da try between the posts.   Gary was picked up by the first aid people and carried off - I never saw him playing in another rugby match afterwards. 
Going back in history a bit - I think Eddie Barlow played rugby and cricket in the 1960's.   Jonty Rhodes played cricket and hockey.   Lee Barnard played rugby and cricket.  Carel du Plessis played rugby and the girls.    After 6 years at Stellenbosch University he had no module/subject to his credit - but he entertained the girls royally - he was apparently ver y good in press ups and downs.

He's not South African but it's always worth mentioning the exploits of CB Fry on threads like these.

CB Fry was best known as a test cricketer who played between 1895 and 1912 and captained England in his last 6 tests matches, but he was also an international footballer, a rugby player, an athlete, a politician, a diplomat and writer . . . and he was once offered the throne of Albania!

As a cricketer, Fry was (not surprisingly) an all rounder although his bowling career was curtailed after umpires called him for a dodgy action. He was a very competent and attacking top order batsman however and scored test centuries against both Australia and South Africa as well as 94 first class centuries.

As an athlete Fry won Blues in all four of his years at Oxford in the long jump, the high jump and the 100 yards. He broke the British long jump record in 1892 and equalled the world long jump record in 1893.

As a footballer he represented England in 1901 in an international against Ireland and he also played in a FA Cup final for Southampton.

Fry played rugby for Oxford but missed out on a Blue due to injury. He did play three matches for the Barbarians.

Fry was also a "decent" hammer-thrower and shot putter, he rowed for Oxford against Cambridge, he was an ice skater and a "proficient" golfer.

 Cliffie Etzebeth is also the senior wrestling world champ in his division or something, not only the SA champ. I'm sure he would have done well in cage fighting if it was around back then. The Etzebeths are rof, Eben is an angel compared to his uncles.

 Ou Maaikie is confusing the two Kirstens. Also battling with the Afrikaans churches as well. It's the "Gereformeerde Kerk" (Doppers) guys who don't dance. Not the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederduitsch Hervomde Kerk).

 Peter Kirsten, not Gary ................. not too sure, but I seem to recall that with him it was basically making a choice between cricket & rugby, multi-talented oak .  That game versus the Lions might've been for the SA Barbarians ?....... I was but a laaitie .

 Blokbok - I think you have it spot on, The Barbarians was just about the only team that gave the Lions some opposition. Thinking Kirsten was hurt in that game never to played again.

"Rugby

In 1974, Kirsten played flyhalf for Western Province under-20 in a curtain raiser to the first test between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. In wet conditions his ball handling abilities so impressed journalist John Reason, that special mention of this was made in his book, The Unbeaten Lions. Kirsten, aged 19, was selected to play for the Quaggas against the touring Lions. He scored 12 points as his team was defeated by 16 – 20. Following the Lions-Quagga game, he was duly selected to play for the Western Province rugby team, but in only his third match, he severely damaged his knee. It would take him out of rugby permanently.

When the 1974 British Lions played Western Province, Peter Kirsten played in the curtain raiser for WP U20 and he was so impressive that he was picked to play against the British Lions for the Quaggas which was effectively a Barbarians XV.

The Quaggas were only narrowly beaten (by one of the greatest teams in rugby history . . . although admittedly it was their dirt-tracker side that day) and Kirsten impressed again to the extent that he was picked for the Western Province Currie Cup team. Unfortunately after just a few games he injured a knee and retired from rugby to concentrate on cricket.

I know that Peter's half brother Gary was also a talented flyhalf but I don't know if he represented any team of note.

I think Gary also played junior/under age rugby for WP, Rooinek. I seem to recall that there is another Kirsten brother who also played some sport.

Paul Kirsten is the younger brother (Gary's full brother and Peter's half brother) but his achievements pale into insignificance compared to his brothers. He did play wicketkeeper for WP but didn't last very long and ended up playing B league cricket for Border and Griquas.

Ollie le Roux was SA schools rugby, wa terpolo and squad I think

 

Gibbs was SA schools rugby and cricket, still one of the best school boy 10's I ever saw. He also had trials at one of the English football clubs I think.
