There are a few simple facts that we must acknowledge about our beloved Springboks.

They are not smart enough to adapt, they simply do not have the ability to learn during a match, the problem here is that they do not observe what their opponents are doing, whether it be at the breakdown, defence, the maul or tactical kicking.

When the opponent is not committing players to your setup to create a maul, you stop using it, when they outsmart you by sending a player around your “non maul” to seal the ball off, then you stop doing it.

The alternative is you go to the referee and query why the defender is allowed to seal the ball off and not roll away if it is not a maul as the normal tackle rules apply.

Either way, you need to adapt to it immediately.

When your opponent keeps hitting numbers to the breakdown, kicking at the ball, lying over it to slow it down, then you adapt and send more numbers in.

When your halfback is not protected and he is continually under pressure you adapt and protect him.

If your opponent keeps rushing up with their defence, alter your attack by chipping in behind them where the space is, alternatively stand just a little flatter, but change your attack, do not keep doing the same thing over and over as only fools do that.

When your line out is being nullified by a smarter team, kick your goals until you take the lead, stop chasing the scoreboard because you are either too arrogant to concede you are being outsmarted, or simply not able to read what is happening.

When your execution is failing on attack, re assess what you are doing, Bismarck conceding two penalties at the breakdown whilst South Africa as Ireland on the ropes is simply unacceptable.

Now for the controversy.

I blame this all on the experienced players who are supposed to be the leaders. These are the same players that failed to adapt in Wellington in 2011. They simply don’t have the grey matter to assess, process and adapt.

Lets face it, this Bok team is not going to win the Rugby World Cup, you may argue this is an over reaction, but the same issues in this game has plagued us against Wales, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

Meyer is relying on experienced players as his leadership group and they are not showing the ability to adapt, I therefor say get rid of them all.

Apart from the fact that Matfield is not physical enough, de Villiers have not shown any of the form that made him great last year, there is criticism of form against all the older players.

Forget about winning the World Cup in 2015, it is not going to happen, accept it and move on by building a new team, put a group of youngsters together and build a team for 2019, but start now.

Agree or disagree, but these so called experienced players are not going to take us any further.

The players that went nowhere in the 2011 WC are virtually all in the team still.   Nothing will make them better in 2015 t han they were in 2011.
I would start making serious changes against the English and try something different and continue with those in the succeeding matches.

BB: the boks have not been able to adapt for sometime now IMO. Until recent times it was 10 man rugby & no thinking was required as this was the "only way to play the game". Dominance in the forwards & beating teams to a pulp meant that this style of play became part of the Boks pysche.
Now the Boks are changing & have a more balanced approach to the game with some good backs & a 10 who can take on the line as well as kick.
But the problem is the players have not yet developed the leadership skills or learned how to adjust on the field. Either that or the coach has told them they are not allowed to deviate from the game plan. It must be a bit of the latter because the coach sends in instructions through the medical staff and the water boy. I don't think we can blame the players alone. The coach must have had his chances to send in instructions if the players were not adapting .

Now dont you be taking off wee Matfield and co ! Bring back Morne !BB I was amazed to see the boks at only 10 points down pass up a gift 3 points and go for the line out .The fact they scored a try is irrelevant as usually this does not bear anything but the bitterest of fruit .

JW, the group of players brought in by White has not been able to adapt. You can go through Jake White's starting list and those same players have been the leadership group for the past 7 years.

Wardad, yes, it frustrated me, we had so many opportunities in the first half, scoring only 3 points was all due to poor decision making, we should have gone into halftime leading, Ireland must have been so relie ved to lead by halftime and it gave them all the necessary belief

Puleeze, get a grip BB. We have just split with the two other top three teams in the world...and we should certainly have won at least one of the games we lost. We were totally competitive in every game.

This is a typical Bok loss against a weaker team....the Boks lost focus after their AB win, haven't played rugby for a month, and thought they were anointed. Having found they are not they will knuckle down and win the rest of their games.

If you want to spot the weak areas in our current team it's a slow inside centre playing 13, two inept scrummies and a loose trio comprised of Vermeulen , the invisible man and a nice trier who doesnt really have the goods. Drop Jean, Victor, Jannie, the Beast and Habana and we will really start losing.

Biltong you have a journalistic angle, only the wrong one.

Excuses - excuses - excuses.   The fact is some players failed badly - others failed marginally and the team did not play as a team.
"Drop Jean, Victor, Jannie, the Beast and Habana and we will really start losing."

Why would be "really start losing"?
*    Jean was very good last year - but he went back rap[idly and really showed nothing this year.
*    Matfield has no grunt and is a Tight 5 liability producing net to noothing in Tight 5 play.-  he is weak in ball carries and tackles and is liable to give away penalties in thoose cases.   We have enpough locks that would take every ball Matfield took in linre outs without sacruificing physicality.i
*    Jannie was poor in the first two scrums - but improvd afterwards.   He will never make the WC squad for next year - his ecord this year was below par uin scrumming and way below par in anything else.
*     Bakkies as had a string of unsaisfacory games and it wuill serve no purpose to keep him in the squad.   Past it and it shows taking into account  his disastrous low work rate.
As expected Mozart has found the players to blame for the disaster yesterday.   It is the same player she had  constant verbal ciarrhea on in the past.   Instead of showing some rugby intellec t he solely blames Serfontein - while a clever  observer woud have seen that you cannot play two no 12's in the backline. ithout serious implications in especially attacking play.   Serfontein was no weaker than Jean - matter of fact he was sronger in ball carries and more difficult to defend against.
Hougaard was the weak link in the team - I grant you that - but Reinach had a better and more effective service when he came on - and now suddenly he is also blamed.
Is Coetzee the invisible man?   I gather hthat you caim he is -but he was the most prominent loosie of the Springboks - Vermeulen was so-so - Coetzee was much moere effective.  Mohoje was indeed the invisible man.
Hell - but you are cluless and so prejudiced  you refuse to recognize reality if it slaps you in the face,
Biltongbek has correctly i denified the real problems and that is where correction is ecessary.

Biltong Bek is advocating the old South African thing of giving up, rather than fighting. The number two ranked team just saying they can't win....on that basis a little guy like Tim Clark would never have won a tournament. This is an old tendency....going all the way back. If you can't dominate, you can't win...I reject the thought.

Spot on Biltong.......we will only start to challenge as the Kiwi's do once the likes of Habana,  Fourie,  Jean, Morne,  Pienaar,  du Preez, Jannie,  Steenkamp, Matfield, Bakkies, Louw, Alberts and Schalk are put out to pastures.
All deadwood and not close to being the best in their respective positions.

Mozart, smell the roses mate, de Villiers, Matfield, Jannie, Schalk, Fourie du Preez, Babbies Botha, Ruan Pienaar etc aren't going to win the World Cup.

That is called being realistic. Why, because the game has moved on from 2007.

They have not learnt how to adapt, if you can't see that then you are living in a bubble.

If it was just the old players that played s hit yesterday then this would make sense, however that is not the case. Additionally Meyer has the 2nd best winning rate as a Springbok coach in the modern era. The main problem was the breakdown and this was where the match was lost. The Bok lineout and scrum totally dominated the Irish, and parity at the rucks would have seen the Boks win easily.
Many of the worst players were the younger ones like Hougaard and Mohoje. Ruan Pienaar may not win the world cup, but surely it will be better than Hougaard's performance yesterday in Northern Hemisphere conditions.
Fourie Dupreez would have played much better than the joke of a performance by Hougaard. FDP is still by far the best scrumhalf in South Africa, regardless or not if he is past his best.
Anyway it is around 10 months until the world cup, so it is too late to start building a new team. This will happen in 2016.
The main issue yesterday was the breakdown. All the worst Bok performances happen when the breakdown is bad. Our loose trio has gone back to being an unbalanced unit. We missed Louw who is used to the breakdown in Northern Hemishpere conditions. We either need 2 loosies who are very effective at the breakdown, or 3 loosies who are all consistent at the breakdown. The Boks could have put Ireland away in the 1st half if the breakdown was the way it has been for much of the season
Bismaark had no effect at the breakdown other than give away stupid penalties. When A Strauss came on the breakdown ball improved a bit, as with when Schalk came on.
Serfontein and Jean were equally poor to average. It is all well and good just choosing younger players, but it has been tried with the likes of Lood de jaager who done nothing.
I would go as far as saying that replace Mohoje with a loose forward that can play on the ground and the Boks performance at the breakdown would be better.

I watched the game for the first time earlier today. I just looked like the Irish were playing their hearts out and they just out hustled the Boks. Even though the boks dominated the set piece they did not get very clean ball.
To me it is not so much that certain players should be blamed but it is more that the Boks were not up for the game.
There were some bad decisions when it came to taking the penalties but remember one of those resulted in a try. Anyway no team can drop 10 or so players. They all need a kick up the butt.

JW, I am so sick and tired of South Africa losing games they should win, yes I know some would say it is arrogant, but if you are number two in the world you should win these games.

I can give you a host of games where the Springboks have lost due to stupidity and failure to adapt. It is always stupid penalties, and the hilarious thing of it is the same penalties repeatedly by the same players.

How bloody dense have you got to be to do the same thing over and over?

We are continually losing games because we are being outsmarted, again, how bloody dense are we?

And nobody can deny the same players that won the series aganst the BI lions, are still making the same mistakes over and over.

There is no bloody way that these players after 80, 90, 100 + tests are going to provide you with anything more, they were old already in 2011 and couldn't win a world cup then, hell they couldn't beat  Wallaby team with 75% possession and territory, the same as this past weekend with 60% territory and possession they couldn't beat the Irish who were riddled with injury, it almost happened to a second string Scottish team last year when Strockosh and Hamilton outsmarted us.

It is pathetic and anyone who cannot see through this is as blind as a bat, or simply extremely dense.

It is matter of balance. Boks have the wrong balance of exp and youth atm. Too many old players. Get rid of Matfeild, Jannie, Bakkies, Steenkamp, Alberts e.t.c. Bring in Du Toit, Coenie, Steenkamp, Peter Du Toit, Jaco Kriel e.t.c. I do agree SA lack the ability to adapt under pressure, like NZ do. I don't think SA well win the wc, even under a year out. I have no idea who well, I think the favorites are NZ, Eng, and Oz IMO.

The ruck was the area that was s-hit, so the looseforwards have to take the blame.
Putting blames on the older players is not logical- unless their rucking performance deteriorates with age.
The tight five played well in the set piece, but the breakdown was crap. 1st to blame must be the loosies- who are balanced in age....

Nothing wrong with the tight five yesterday. But the loosies were a problem. Coetzee tries hard, but he  is useless on the deck, our turnovers are made by the hookers. So he simply isn't fulfilling the role of a good open side. Mahoje does a few good things, but we miss the power we got from Alberts last year. I knew this was going to happen when so many were deriding his role.
So we get no quick ball...and what we do get is squandered by Hougaard. I think Pollard was fine yesterday, but well marked. Serfontein was at first receiver a lot of the time and achieved very little. Hendricks literally did nothing...JP added an immediate edge.
But the fact is only Jannie  and the Beast were better than in the RC, everybody else was worse.

But to JWs point Ireland played a hell of a game. They made very few mistakes. They kicked all their kicks. They tackled in waves. They were dominated at the set pieces but made up for it at the  breakdowns. Their handling of the maul was brilliant  including their surprise non engage.

Ireland was only beaten in the last seconds by the ABs last year. I think we may have got there without the Strauss yellow, but we wouldn't have deserved it, Ireland simply wanted it more.

You obviously are totally oblivious about what happened on the field of play.   If you did not see matfield poppingout on the side of mauls you musty have missed part of the game.   There is soethings eriously amiss in tight phases since matfield did nothinh in that dEpartment and remins a liability.   His ball carries in traffic is non-existent and his tendency to give away  at least one penalty everygame is evident.
Botha did squat when he came on and Jannie was slightly better than his normn - even thought he first two scrums were disastrous - he did better in the later scrums.  Not reliable at all in all aspects of play.
To blame Coetzee for poor performance and being  "Coetzee tries hard, but he  is useless on the deck"  is total and prejudiced rubbish.    He did  better than anyother loosie and was credited as such by the commentators.    Mohoje was the weak link in the loosies.
"So we get no quick ball...and what we do get is squandered by Hougaard."  Sure Hougaard was a serious problem - but whatis a joe is that earlier you advocated for the retuurn of Alberts - who plays zero rroles in quick ball recvery.  Hw would have made zero b=difference yesterday.
You have to find reasons for your standard attack on Serfontein - and normlly those are inventions in your mins.   You fail to accept that both De Villiers and Serfontein showed no signs of any attacking abilities.  - both played like no 12 crashballers and they got nowhere in that - since oit often enough resulted in possession losses.   De Villiers last year was excllent - this year was barely adequate. - and it showed again on Saturday.  Neither  De Villiers o Serontein showed anything much - bar the fact that Serfontein was moreeffective in carrying balls.
Pietersen showed nothing when he was on and hi scoring f the try wcame down to quick service by the by you much maligned pairing of Reinach and Serfontein -who put him inthe lcear.
Mozart - the way you read performances is entirely based on your prejudices and not relating to any real issues on the field of play.    So keep up finding excuses for poor play by your favourites - it really is a joke.

I can't help but compare the Ireland test to the quarterfinal in 2011 Boks vs Wallabies...

same stew, same flavor, when we had plenty of possession and territory but failed on the scoreboard. The Boks are far to predictable, opposition teams know they have to match Bok physicality and half the battle is won.

There's no sense in blaming the older players when even the younger players failed. If we're going to fingerpoint Matfield, Jannie and Burger then we should also do likewise with Hougaard, Etsebeth and Williie.

The problem I fear lies more in our inflexibility and our inability to function as a cohesive unit. Kicking out of hand remains poor and backline play is ineffective.

The similarities between the 2011 WC quarterfinal and the Ireland test is bizarre, I won't hold it against anyone for saying that the Boks haven't learnt from the experience of 2011 and subsequently failed to improve . I still think the Boks can win the WC but Meyer needs to look outside the square with regards to selections, tactics and bench.

If he must be kept then by all means begin again ... from scratch ... get rid of the old ... all of them ... for the 2019 world cup ... cause next year's a goner, thanks to his incompetence.

OK, I reviewed the first half play by play to see who did what.

It takes a bit of time so I don't have the time or inclination to sit through te second half as well.

Here is what I observed.

Beast scrummed well, but very quiet, no carries, a few tackles, nothing special.

Bismarck concedes a penalty on a Irish ruck by going in from the side 5 meters out from the Irish line. Bismarck again conceding a penalty for entry into the side on an attacking ruck 30 meters from the Irish line, scrummed well, his throws were accurate, but otherwise nothing outstanding.

Jannie drops the second scrum and gets penalised. Jannie drives over the line out and turns the ball over to SA inside Irish 22, his best play of the half. He scrummed well after the penalty, otherwise nothing outstanding.

Etzebeth steals two line outs, one 5 meters from the Irish line, otherwise nothing outstanding.

Matfield is turned over in the tackle as he cannot secure the ball. Did well in the line outs, made some of the calls not to go for post. Nothing worth noting from him.

Coetzee the outstanding player of the half, carried the ball, was physical, and nothing to criticise apart from the backrow in general not hitting the rucks effectively.

Mohoje stole one Irish line out, had a few drives, but nothing outstanding, mostly invisible.

Vermeulen made one mistake in the half, he dropped an up and under but secured a couple as well, the lone ranger at the breakdown with little support, otherwise nothing noteworthy.

Hougaard had a mixed bag, he dropped a ball 2 meters from the line, definite scoring opportunity lost. Ireland kicked through and made 50 meters. His one up and under was too far and poorly chased. Hougaard dropped another ball at the back of the maul, but you might want to blame the forwards as that was the second maul where POite called use it and the forwards don’t let go. The previous maul POite supposedly called, we were edging toward the line and he called turnover.

He made a very poor pass out wide, saved by Serfontein. He also  received a ball flicked back by Coetzee as The Irish come around another maul they didn’t commit too, Hougaard under severe pressure and no forwards protected him.

Pollard made a few mistakes, he missed touch twice, He backtracked well for a Sexton chip kick, but Kearney showed him up badly and broke the first line of defence to go straight through. His up and unders didn’t work as they were too long and not well chased. He stuffed a few inside passes, too hard, and it seemed as if he panicked a bit on attack.

Habana literally did nothing in the first half.

Serfontein had a decent first half, he made some half breaks, got a good offload to Jean de Villiers, made his tackles and threw one poor pass. Conceded a penalty immediately after Pollard missed the tackle on Kearney.

De Villiers was quiet, threw one wild pass, took the offload from Serfontein, made poor decisions in regards to not going for goal, but was otherwise invisible.

Hendricks made one successful chase after a restart, but then missed the tackle, invisible.

Willie had a great first half, he missed touch once, but other than that he took his up and unders, he made a run, had a great territorial kick

There were two very good try scoring opportunities wasted.

One was by Poite, we had a maul, it went forward stopped for less than a second, went again, and the next time it stopped for maybe a second, we continued and Poite decided that was enough, had he not stopped it and called a turnover we would have scored as we were almost over the line already. I thought that was a very harsh call.

The second opportunity was when Hougaard took his eye of the ball whilst fighting for possession of the ball that was in the hands of Etzebeth, two meters out and we lost it, Ireland kicked it through and the pressure was relieved.

Then there were also the three decisions not to go for goal.

Yeah definitely, poor execution, poor decision making and no cohesion.

I'm afraid our problems go a lot deeper....why for example don't the AB's suffer the rollercoaster ride that we do?...Oz will pull together and set a course( a non rugby nation, nogal) but nope, we will dither.

I accept that they are more and better skilled than what we are but yet we have shown that we can compete and win. The Boks cannot and shouldn't rely on pure physicality to get them over the line.

Are rolling mauls for example the only way we can score tries?

No, mauls are not our only weapon, but someone forgot to tell them.

"Drop them all" ?

Are we not asking now for a Destroyli manoeuvre? - we know what the outcome of those wholesale changes were!

I'd say get Kriel (6) in and play Coetzee as 7.

We need a good 9, but I have no idea whom to select. Vermaak?

Etzebeth made 2 steals in the lineout, so, dropping Matfield will not really weaken our lineout. Replace him with Lood? -  I think Lood is unfortunately also a bit of a softy in the mauls. Pity Flip-flop is not available.
