Heyneke Meyer has reportedly offered Fourie du Preez the Springbok captaincy for the three-Test series against England next month.

Very disappointing.

What does he still have left to prove?

Pick someone that is still involved in and who still has a lot to offer.

All this means is tha twe are further delaying the "true" arrival of Hougaard as a world class 9!

...Meyers first step is a step backwards.

LOL! HM's Bokke team looks more and more like the 2011 Bools.

This cannot be true - if it is it is the biggest disaster SA Rugby has seen in the past ten years.   i never was a Du Preez fan and is not bound to become one now.   Maybe Meyer should go the disaster route and fail - he could then forget the Bulls and start thinking wider.

"...Meyers first step is a step backwards."

More like 1 step forward and 9 steps backwards.....if you think of the slap in the face of the current captains playing on home soil.

Wise move Mr Meyer.  Find out whats gone wrong in the past in order to move forward.

Du Preez might surprise us all. He has been playing for Eddie jones team, and we all know what an great back line coach he is. That said, hougaard has been really poor in his last couple of games. His passing is stil not up to standard.

Pathetic call by Meyer and a slap in the face to Hougaard

Hougaard has earned the jersey and only needs to learn to play his own game instead of Du Preez's outdated box-kicking game. Du Preez is a legend, but we learned that legends must retire timeously in the WC!

I am gonna disagree with you all here. Now, before I get started, I DON'T think Du Preez is the answer at captain for the long term. Firstly, what real captains do we have at the moment in the country? De Villiers (Stormers), pffft, pull the other one. He is average at best as a captain. Spies (Bulls).....need I say more? Strauss (Lions) probably wont even make the squad, let along be good enough to make the Springbok run-on team. Keegan Daniel (Sharks) won't make the Springbok team, and has no international experience. A Strauss (Cheetahs) might make the Springbok team, but on the bench at best, and seriously, do you want him to replace Bizzie on the run-on side...nope, I didn't think so.

Guys, Fourie has the respect of the other players and he has massive international experience. Look, he is not the best captain, but he's one of the strongest candidates out of a weak bunch. We have no real options, that is why he is there. And please try to remember, it is only for 3 tests, not long term.

Beans, I am not convinced, but we don't really have any options for the captaincy, that is all I am saying. Although, you'd expect someone with his experience to know whether or not he is fit for a test match. Again, he is the best of a bad bunch, and it is only temporary.

Would have liked to see him in action Blue.

Watched England thump the Baa Baas. They look like a handy side but its difficult to say against weak oppostion like they faced.

Saw Pienaar in the stands at the Stormers Sharks game. Dont think he was in the squad.

How much can a captain achieve in so short a time. Our guys are up against it - not a single warm up match - new side. Crazy really.

Yeah me too. Haven't seen him play since the WC, but I guess we'll find out soon enough if he is fit. England do look like a decent side, we'll need to settle pretty quickly, but I still reckon that man for man, we have the better side..and playing at home. As for Pienaar, the further away he is from the Bok mix the better. Never rated him as the star everybody else did. Maybe it is the fault of those who played him out of position, thereby messing him up, but I still feel he was overrated.

@bluebok

You've made me think a bit mate.

Well put.

WHo else do we have?

...Im assuming you left Schalla out of the equation due to injury.

Def not Spoes or de Villiers.

Strauss needs to play a few bok games before being given any form of leadership ro,le. Lets see how it pans out with a decent pack in front of him. I have a lot of hope for him.

I remember Kitch Christie giving James Small a senior role in the Bok team. A role which saw him in charge of discipline. It worked wonders.

With that in mind, I wonder how Bizmarck would respond to a leadership role?

Yeah Chippo, I am assuming Schalk will be out injured. Also, on your point about Bizzie (James Small) and discipline, it worked for Schalk as well, once he took over the Stormers capataincy, he cleaned up his game a lot....nice point, food for thought.
