We are fortunate on this site -
* we have the members who can write prose of the highest order and quality using the most inventive terms imaginable;
* we have the realists who try to keep a balance based on factual rugby performances and ideas; and
* we have the hot heads who slips into furious usage of expletives when their ideas are countered.
However, it is not easy o classify the various members into clearly defined categories, since some has the characteristics that covers all three the above categories - so lets from the theory and look at examples.
We all thought that we are at last seeing a decline in the standings of Earl Silky hands and that he may be on his way to play Vodacom Cup rugby - a level where I think he is suitable for - when up pops the comment that Boshoff is "The Boot" and no good for anything else - and Earl Silky Hands is tops insofar as all round rugby performance is concerned. So a discussion problem on this item will persist and will enliven this site for weeks to come.
Last week we saw a game played in Bloemfontein under terrible weather conditions and slipping and sliding was the order of the day. However, slipping and sliding is not beautiful enough for our learned prose writer - after all I could be is-interpreted and given a negative connotation - it should rather be "gliding". I like Serfontein very much as a player - so I would hate see him being identified as "Gliding Jan" So lets keep it simple and only call him Jan - we d not want to see him gliding out of contention for selection to the Springbok squad.
Then we have the ferocious defence of Francois Steyn after his latest debacle. Comments range from St Francois of the Sharks (as against St Francis of Assisi) and the villain of the piece in last Saturdays game between the Hurricanes. However, lets get to the middle ground here - as St Francois has a reputation to defend, Nobody in the history of inside center hood - have achieved what our St Francois achieved last Saturday insofar as ball hogging is concerned. In my initial shock and disappointment I called him "Fuckwit" - but that really is way beyond the pail. I think I have found just the right description for the honourable St Francois. Lets call him Witless Hog Steyn in future. Leaving out the surname should present no problem at all - everyone would know clearly who the description fits like a glove.
We are getting there - we now have really descriptive names for three players already. They are -
* Earl Silky Hands
* Jan; and
* Witless Hog
