Eben Etzebeth has taken to social media after former Springbok lock Bakkies Botha called into question his spell at the French Top 14 club, Toulon.

Over the weekend in an interview with Midi Olympique, Botha - who played for the club between 2011 and 2015 - acknowledged that while Etzebeth is the best in the world, "in Toulon, he is still a little injured, concussed and in the end, never plays."

Etzebeth faces another month on the sidelines after suffering a torn muscle during a training session before Toulon's Top 14 meeting with Perpignan and his time at the club has been plagued by injuries.

Frustratingly for the struggling French giants, their prized asset had just returned from a three-month break last week as part of a concussion protocol.

Etzebeth responded on Twitter on Monday and clearly wasn't impressed by what Botha had to say in the interview.

"@BakkiesBotha4- Noted. Next time you want to ENFORCE an opinion, you've got my number. #exspringbokteammates #onthoujouerekode," Etzebeth tweeted.

Etzebeth, who boasts 97 Test caps, has recently signed for the Sharks saying that personal circumstances played the biggest role in his decision to return to play South Africa.

He reports for duty in July and has signed a long-term contract until 2027.

...Russia vs Ukraine anyone?

Poor call by Bakkies - the guy is being a complete prick but I would love to see the two of them have a fight

Too overgrown immature boofs having a go at each other...it's childish. Too much physical power ego images in juvenal intellect.

Eben,s time with Toulon had some incidents , but for Bakkies to go and stir something is just stupid.....Eben is having bad luck at the moment with injury, but this is a normal part of rugby. Although Bakkies was a good lock he did not really have the talent that Eben have...in .any-case it is unnecessary for Bakkies to stir shit, because what the past tells us about him is that he was mostly a dirty player:)

A case of two great locks being set up by the media.

All in the name of ratings.

Ja the media does play a part, but Bakkies chose to make that comment.....so he is obviously trying to stir shit.

The green monster spotted...pity a great lock like Bakkies can succumb to it...even greater pity Eben responded.

Eben spent a few spells injured at the Stormers.I personally don't know how these players

can keep up the demands of the game..year in, year out

Richi e McCaw got it right but he was still probably sponsored by their rugby union.

Will depend on him...his contract can't prevent him from playing for the Bokke in the test window, but some Bokke choose to make gentleman's agreements which exclude them from test rugby...by choice, for more money obviously...

These two represent two of our greatest ever locks.

To realize what a feeble lock wee mat filed is think of the pap oak squaring up to Bakkies or Eben!

Saffex Du Toit is a great player and we can dismiss poor Mozzzz's remarks.

Doesn't get much better than WPOTY and the RWC in the same year...there's a reason for the hype...not all exaggerated...

Not doubting that he is good, but very injury prone....the guy already had his tendant replaced..... his grandfather or father, not sure was the donor....let’s hope he stays in one piece long enough
