WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Queensland Reds lock Ed O'Donoghue has been found not guilty of eye gouging at a Super Rugby judicial hearing on Monday.

O'Donoghue was shown a red card in the final minute of the Reds' match against the Melbourne Rebels in Brisbane on Saturday on the recommendation of the television match official. The Rebels kicked the resulting penalty to win 30-27.

O'Donghue appeared before judicial officer Jannie Lubbe of South Africa on Monday charged under law 10.4 which refers to acts contrary to good sportsmanship.

Lubbe said after considering witness statements and medical evidence he found no evidence of eye gouging.

Well, no eye gouge. Was having the hands around the eyes sufficient for a red card? Not smart but was it sufficient justification for the red?
