England are considering whether to move Manu Tuilagi to the wing to boost their resources for the all-important second test against New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday.

Stuart Lancaster, the head coach, admitted yesterday that the possibility of switching the Leicester centre to the wing had been discussed and would provide one solution to settling the centre combination, where England have a surfeit of candidates.

Lancaster faces the toughest selection process of his England career across the board, with fine-line calls to be made as to retaining line-out maestro Geoff Parling over the available Courtney Lawes, and likewise the impeccable set-piece return of hooker Rob Webber has to be set against the claims of Lawes' Northampton teammate, Dylan Hartley. Billy Vunipola also needs to impress in training to reclaim the No8 shirt from Ben Morgan.

They know they have to get this right if the series is to go to the final week in Hamilton. They have a full roster from which to choose.

Gloucester centre Billy Twelvetrees has been declared fit after missing the first test last Saturday with an ankle injury. Bath's Kyle Eastmond delivered a performance of note in the 20-15 defeat, showing trickery in attack and solidity in defence.

Brad Barritt is also in the frame, as is one of the standout centres of the Six Nations campaign, Luther Burrell of Northampton.

"We have got a potential option of playing Manu on the wing," Lancaster said. "That has been discussed in selection. Manu has got pace. You saw how quickly he tracked back when they kicked the ball through [beating Israel Dagg to the touchdown]. He is one of the quickest in our squad. He has not played there for a while for his club, but came through age grade as a wing. He would be a significant threat off phase play. But, equally, there is all the aerial work that is part of the equation and that would challenge him. Defensively, though, he would be fine. He understands the system."

Lancaster has to balance integrating proven performers such as Burrell and Twelvetrees with rewarding those stop-gap selections that did a sterling job for England at Eden Park on Saturday night. The Tuilagi conundrum crystallises the issue. England actually played well in attack, making more line breaks than New Zealand. Lancaster has not settled on the final line-up in his own mind and went out of his way to praise the contribution of the two wings on duty in Auckland, Jonny May and Marland Yarde. Saracens' Chris Ashton, after a spell in purdah, is back in the frame.

"I was pleased with Jonny's performance, as he has got incredible pace and created opportunities," Lancaster said.

Halfback Danny Care, who jarred his shoulder last week, will resume non-contact training today with Lancaster "pretty optimistic" he will be available for selection. Alex Goode, though, has a knee problem and is almost certainly ruled out.

Both teams are looking for ways to increase their performance. I expect more radical changes from the Poms though.

What a stupid move that would be - he is England's most dangerous back - why waste him on the wing

England made so many breaks during that match they should have scored tries.
I put it down to having poor wings that they did not score tries, because the centres played very well.
They should not mess around with Barrett who is a one dimensional crash ball that adds nothing on attack

Shows how much you know Sharktwat.......you will find that Yarde is a class act......this kid is going to set test rugby alight. For the record May on the other wing had a good game - what rugby were you watching......did the England wings mess up try scoring opportunities created by the centres huh?

Geez do you know anything about rugby......stick to the cut and pastes!!

"Another kid" that is going to set the world alight.

if Habana or Savea or the like- was on the wing for England surely they would have scored at least one try given the amount of breaks made.
It is about positional play and running lines, not just being the last carrier in a line movement to fall over the line.
a good wings scores tries by converting oppertunities and space into tries.

why do you think they are considering moving him to the wing?
he had a great game at centre, and if their wings are so good why make the change

so why not just drop Tuilagi if the change is purely about getting a centre onto the pitch ?

bottom line a winger is being dropped, and they are looking to have someone on the wing that can score tries.

they are moving their best back out of position, and dropping a winger. so they are actually making a positional change and dropping a winger from last week.

Bottom line is that you are speaking shit saying that the England wings were poor and that they missed scoring opportunities......for not once did either wing miss a scoring opportunity.
England were missing up to 10 starters, so there is a good chance a number of players that started on Sat will get dropped......but that is not because they were poor - get it?

I think this is a fantastic idea.He has the speed and strength, and opens the way for another talented centre to join on to the field.twelvetrees and Burell will make an awsome combo or Twelvetrees and Barrit. It will be Johonny May who gives way for Tualagi.

May showed speed but he couldn't get the job done other than that. England must have some other wingers to call on.

They have spoken about this before. I am not convinced.....

I think they want Burrell and Twelvetrees back together and don't want Tuilagi off the pitch. Eastmond played well, so I suppose he would be on the bench....or would he ? Would we have a wing ? I am confused now

The centre pairing should be Burrell at 12 with Tuilagi at 13. Eastmond is handy and it would be a tough call between him and Twelvetrees for the bench.

The option is Eastmond on the wing I suppose.....he and Yarde would be handy.

Moving Tuilagi away from the action on the wing would be a huge mistake, especially considering how good he has been against NZ in particular

leave tuilagi in the centers where he is at his most dangerous. the more time times tuilagi touches the ball, the better england are for it.
there was a lot of similarities between the way tuilagi played against the All Blacks in 2012 and last weekend and that is a touch bit scary, especially as england are the All Blacks toughest opponents in 2014 after the wallabies.

i would have twelvetrees at 12 though, eastmond was surprisingly solid in the first test, and unless he could somehow prove a guarantee repeat performance, i would prob roll with twelvetrees who i have always been a big fan of.
manusamoa tuilagi and billy twelve trees would be one big mean midfiled pairing and would trouble the wolrd most successful midfiled pairing in the world in nonu and snake.

Tuilagi missed the 6N missed large parts of the season through a pec injury. Last Saturday was his first real game back from injury I expect him to get get better and pass/offload the ball more rather put guys in space.

Our wingers are fine they just need more games fairly inexperienced, Jonny May is probably the quickest player on the planet. He's always making breaks, close to scoring a try once he scores his first he'll start scoring regularly.

Marland Yarde again like May new to the scene his previous 2 caps vs a weak Argentina side young guy who missed the 6N through injury didn't really get any ball in space. This guy can break tackles and hes got great acceleration
