An ankle injury to lock Eben Etzebeth overshadowed the Stormers’ regulation 57-0 win over the Boland Cavaliers in a Super Rugby warm-up fixture at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Stormers scored nine tries to nil and would have felt that they got most of what they wanted out of the match.

But the negative of injuries to key players always hovers like a spectre over early-season matches, and Etzebeth is probably the last person that coach Allister Coetzee would have wanted to see coming off the field injured less than two weeks from the tournament opener against the Bulls at Loftus.

Losing Etzebeth for the Bulls match looks a strong possibility as he looked in considerable discomfort as he hobbled off the field in the first quarter.

Indeed, while the medical assessments still need to be done, it could well be that Etzebeth misses a couple of early games, which would mean the Stormers have to live without him against the Sharks and Chiefs too.

“I have to admit I am a bit nervous about Eben’s condition. He fell very awkwardly and has an ankle strain and we will know the extent of it once he has been assessed tomorrow,” said Coetzee.

The Etzebeth injury offset the positive of strong returns to the playing field of two players who have been out for varying lengths of time – Andries Bekker and Siya Kolisi.

Bekker, who has been absent since the closing stages of the Currie Cup season, put in a busy 50-odd minutes before leaving the field straight after scoring a trademark try.

Flanker Kolisi, out since halfway through last year, was as prominent as Bekker, and capped his comeback with a hat-trick of tries, which he scored in quick succession between the 57th and 69th minutes.

Coetzee can be confident after this that Kolisi will quickly regain the form that made him such a talking point in his debut Super Rugby season.

Another returnee, Rynhardt Elstadt, did not cross the line but was even more impressive than the other pair, and was definitely the pick of the players in the first half as the Stormers ground out a 17-0 lead in slippery conditions.

Now trading almost exclusively as a blindside flank after playing mostly lock in 2011, Elstadt looks to have trimmed down for the role and appears busier and more mobile.

With Schalk Burger set to return at some stage, Coetzee certainly looks spoiled for choice at loose forward.

And of course, if Etzebeth is ruled out, Elstadt can still slot back in at lock, with Michael Rhodes, the new recruit from the Lions, being the other option.

It’s debatable whether we can be as positive about the Stormers’ flyhalf depth and the choice of goalkicker.

Kurt Coleman made a positive start with some good little chips and a cross-kick that put Gio Aplon in for the second try.

But no sooner had someone mentioned that he is a less-than-reliable goalkicker than Coleman missed a conversion from in front of the posts and then missed another from a kickable position not long after.

Joe Pietersen took over the goalkicking from Coleman when he came on at fullback, but Jaco Taute, who scored a try off some excellent running from Bryan Habana with almost his first touch of the ball as a Stormer in front of a Cape Town crowd, has surely cemented his place in the last line of defence for Loftus.

So it’s small wonder then that Coetzee seems determined to play Elton Jantjies at No 10 against the Bulls even though the Springbok newcomer to the Cape won’t have played an official game for the Stormers before then.

Jantjies returns from compassionate leave this week and he will be expected to embark on a sharp learning curve both in training and in the opposed session against the WP Vodacom Cup team on Wednesday night.

For the rest, there were probably too many handling errors for Coetzee’s comfort, but then that was to be expected in a warm-up game, particularly one that was played in such slippery conditions following persistent unseasonal rainfall on the morning of the match.

Damian de Allende and Jean de Villiers combined okay for a first time together in the midfield, although the former does appear to be too lateral in his running at times.

SCORERS

Stormers – Tries: Jaco Taute, Gio Aplon (2), Siya Kolisi (3), Jean de Villiers, Joe Pietersen, Andries Bekker; Conversions: Joe Pietersen (5), Kurt Coleman.

Maybe in the B team = never the A-team - for Retallick.  I watchhed the Super 15 final last year - and in the very first line -out Retallick lost the ball on own throw.   He was not much better later on.   A lock is supposed to be a line -out expert as well and he really is not.   We have at least six locks better than Retallick.   The latter would not get into my fantasy team either.

I am not sure how serious this injury really was - most likely only a less serious sprain.   Ezebeth was sitting watching the game afterwards without any ice pack around the ankle.   I think we should wait for the tests on Monday and see what comes up.

@mikey,

retallick had a very average game in the finals, was very effective in the breakdowns, but his usual high standards everywhere else was not the norm.
while he lost that first lineout to kankowski, u also need to remember that kankowski was on a roll for ths harks in the last 6 weeks of spXV, winning the majority of the hsarks lineouts and stealing more then a couple from the oppoistion, i was impressed with kankowski and remember trying to fit him in my fantasy team at the time, lolz.
how ever while ur right retallicks duties as a lock was not fulfilled that game, it is clear u missed a lot of his other games in the spXV, however, let me again happily remind u of retallicks season,,,,

rettallicks 2012 spXV stats,,,,
leading tackler for a tight 5 forward and 4th overall for most tackles made
9th for most pick and drives
7th for most clean lineout balls won
1st for most lineouts steals

FYI ezebeth and his marshallow ankles didnt make the top 10 on any of tbhose stats, tehehehehe, -_o

There is ahuge difference in what is a lock and a quasi loosie that produce very little in the tight pgases of the game. and is really questionable in line outs when facing proper locks.   Does Retallicj do nayhing in driving mauls for instance - or rather to counter0act them?   Nothing.

He may be a good lock in the NewZealand phraseolgy - but really - he gets run over far to easily when he has to put his body on the line - and an occassional spear tackle does not help.

I am not at all convinced that this is a serious ankle injury.  Reason - Etzebeth was sitting on the side with the reserves - and was barefoot.  Normally in he case of relatively serious injury -- they put an icepack on it - but there was none.  He was talking to the other players and laughing when Bekker nearly lost hia pants in a tackle and had nothing on undeneath it.

We will have to wait for a medical report on Monday - but I think it was a minor sprain and he came off because they did not want to aggravate it by him remaining on the field of play.   Maybe wrong - but lets wait and seewhat happens tomorrow.

@mikey,
mauls and rolling mauls are not a storng mart of any of the NZ frachises game, nor is it the All Blacks for that matter im sad to say., but as ive watched a lot of retallicks game, i know first hand  that he gets involved with a lot of thst nitty gritty stuff and if u watch his games again this year, im sure u will see the same thing.

but its obvious ur needling with this comment,,,
"but really - he gets run over far to easily when he has to put his body on the line -"
cos the player who makes the 4th most tackles in the competiton is not really a roadblock,

considering retallick is the leading lineout stealer in the competiton and 7th for clean lineouts overall, u must not rate ezebeth as much as i do, :oP

This is bad news, Etzebeth is the Stormers!!

Lets just hope Coetzee does not play the useless de Kock Steenkamp as Eben's replacement - sadly I suspect he will.

It would be better to move Elstadt to lock - at 1.98m and 118kg he will fit the bill perfectly.

  • Cape Town - Stormers lock Eben Etzebeth will miss the start of his team's 2013 Super Rugby campaign, after being ruled out of action for six to eight weeks.

Etzebeth limped off in the first half of team's 57-0 pre-season win over the Boland Cavaliers on Saturday and a subsequent scan revealed that he tore ligaments in his left ankle after landing awkwardly at a lineout.

The Springbok lock will be out of action for a minimum of six weeks.

VIDEO: Stormers v Boland Cavaliers highlights

"It's unfortunate for the team and Eben, but like I said after the match yesterday injuries are part and parcel of the game," said Stormers coach Allister Coetzee.

"We are fortunate to have players in our squad who can step in and fill that role and that's our focus for now - to find a player to fill that No 4 lock role.

"At the same time, however, our medical team will also ensure that Eben recovers well and comes back strongly for the Stormers."

The Stormers have completed their pre-season playing schedule, after taking part in warm-up matches against the Cheetahs and Boland on February 2 and 9, respectively.

The 2011 and 2012 SA Conference winners will open their 2013 Super Rugby season against the Bulls in Pretoria on Friday, February 22 (kick-off 19:10).
