Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth is one of five players to be nominated for the 2013 IRB Player of the Year award.

The other nominees are Wales and British & Irish Lions fullback Leigh Halfpenny, Italy No 8 Sergio Parisse, All Blacks No 8 Kieran Read and All Blacks wing/centre Ben Smith. Read is the favourite to win the award.

The nominees were selected by the independent IRB awards panel, chaired by Australia’s 1999 World Cup-winning captain John Eales.

The panel, comprising Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibañez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga and Paul Wallace, has deliberated on every major Test played in 2013, starting with the opening Six Nations match and culminating with the November internationals.

The panel will reconvene after the final Test of the year on 30 November, when the IRB Player of the Year will be selected and announced shortly afterwards. The IRB Coach and Team of the Year award winners will also be announced at this time.

Halfpenny nomination is laughable, he has done very little with ball in hand. Willie was far better and should have been one of the 5 ahead of Half

agreed. Halfpenny has probably been the best place kicker in world rugby this year and been solid under the high ball. Although he has not been put under pressure. I am not even sure if he played against South Africa, but if he did he made very little impression.

Of the other nominees I fancy Sergio Parisse as well but while us Saffers are obviously behind Eben, I would not be too surprised of it goes to Kieran Read.

My green tinted glasses would like to see Etzebeth win it but I honestly think Read deserves it.He's been superb all season.

  surprised not to find JDV on this list. He's been the soul of the springboks' resurgence this year. I would have included him instead of Etzebeth.

The level of game displayed by Kieran Read it's been so high during all the season that it's gonna be dificult to see again one so complete season. Simply outstanding

 Kieran Read has been Brilliant this year. He has really stepped up to take the part of Mccaw of that exceptional player but also exceptional leader. 
I would put allot of money on Read taking it, maybe 80% odds. He is both physical like Duane Vermeulen but also has the skills of the most mobile loose forwards.
It is no longer the All Blacks being dependent on Mccaw and Carter against the best opposition.
@ABasquefanTrue about Jean Devilliers, although for much of the SuperXV season he was average. He has be en great for the boks.

 I think Halfpenny has been best in show for the NH, B&I lions player of the series - he was outstanding over those 3 tests in particular, thought Folau might have got a look but Read surely has this...

IMO read should walk into the player of the year, hes outplayed every counterpart easy bar none, but theres been crazier upsets before,,,,

2009 McCaw - should have been du preez (who says the king cant pilfer, lolz)
2011 dussatoir - should have been kaino
2012 carter - should have been McCaw

read should win it, but watch out for the little welsh wizzard halfpenny, i get the feeling that the lions series holds extra significance like the RWC.

lady elizabeth has been the easy pick of the Boks bunch, but he hasnt been influential in every test hes played, unlike read.

ben smith has been just as good if not better then read in the SH, but the All Blacks need to develop our 13 on the EOYT has pretty much snuffed his chances.

watched a few italy tests and parrise was huge in all of them which is per norm, especiall that french test which i really enjoyed watching.
