Glen Jackson will ref Crusaders-Chiefs Super Rugby semifinal in Christchurch

RICHARD KNOWLER

Last updated 18:16, July 24 2017

If any Glen Jackson voodoo dolls existed before July 15, they are probably in a dishevelled state now.

Jackson, you may remember, was the referee who copped the wrath of a number of Crusaders fans when their team lost 31-22 to the Hurricanes in their final Super Rugby round-robin match in Wellington.

The whistler, the red and black army alleged, did their team a major dis-service by penalising them off the park, with the defeat eventually costing them the chance to finish at the top of the competition log.

(...)

Now the Crusaders have to contend with Jackson again, because he has been confirmed as the man who will referee the semifinal against the Chiefs in Christchurch on Saturday night.

Crusaders assistant coach Jason Ryan was never going to fire any verbal death stars at Jackson because, let's face it, who in their right mind would criticise a ref in the days leading-up to such an important match?

"We are happy with Jacko, no problems there at all," Ryan said. "We learned a lot in that game (against the Hurricanes), clearly, and I think it showed in the penalty count.

"This week we will just concentrate on what we need to be better at, and I think we only had two penalties against us in the first half (of the 17-0 win over the Highlanders last weekend) and not a lot for the whole game."

The Crusaders stats showed they lost the penalty count 17-8 against the Hurricanes in the Cake Tin, and when you concede that many turnovers against a team like the defending champions you are destined to land in an undignified heap.

SANZAAR is a f*cking joke and it's turning Super Rugby into a farce,..... how the hell they can appoint an ex-chiefs player to ref the chiefs in a semi?

this game is going to decide the whole season for both teams,... one year's work is going to be judged and defined by the outcome of this game and what did those clowns of the SANZAAR do? having the whole refs' staff at their disposal, to choose the only one with real bonds with one of the teams,.... wtf is this? where is the minimum neutrality required? unbelievable

If being an ex-chiefs player weren't enough to question his neutrality, Glen Jackson just comes from a truly persecution of the crusaders team,.... the penalty account of the game against the canes says it all,... 17-8, nine more penalties, more than double the  penalties,.... yeah, the saders were ill-disciplined but the canes were as ill-disciplined or even more (e.g., canes players were clearly offside by 1-2 meters many times but he only penalized the saders for unclear offsides)

9 more penalties is a huge difference and with the kicking range of the current players  it means points or huge territorial gains (and possesion),.... in that game it meant that the saders had to defend on their own 22 after almost all the penalties,.... 9 more times defending on your own 22 is a huge burden for a team

Glen Jackson is a bad ref, he uses to penalize the wrong things,.... but, at least, untill that canes-saders game, he was consistent with both teams,.... in that game he was the definition of inconsistency which is the worst a ref can be

This really shows just how incompetent the officials who are in place.
Surely there must be other refs who are qualified to handle a game at this level.
Shocking and amazed at the decision.

and the farce continues,..... a saffa ref appointed for a semi involving a SA team,..... I rate Jaco Peyper, with A. Gardner, as the bests refs at this moment,... but there should have been neutral refs in the finals

is that difficult to appoint an aussie ref for the Lions-Canes game? and an aussie or saffa ref for the Saders-chiefs game? wtf is SANZAAR doing? are they trying to definitively sink the Super Rugby competition or what?

I think you make a good point AB. If only for the perception of neutrality it is important to have a neutral ref. Them using an ex player is just unnecessarily poking the bear.

Well just look at the Bryce Lawrence fiasco

He was certainly neutral as a NZ ref for a SA vs Aus game wasn't he........

It's 6 years down the line and we still have tearful South Africans bleating about Bryce Lawrence!

Talk about embarrassing!

For the record, Bryce Lawrence was a thoroughly decent rugby man and a world-class referee whose career was effectively ended by blubbering South African crybabies who were so desperate for an excuse for the Springboks poor performance at the 2011 RWC that they made death threats against a guy who was just doing the best job he could with his limited ability . . . same as all the other decent hard-working people on the planet.

A truly shameful episode in our rugby history . . . makes you wonder why the rugby noobs keep bringing it back to embarrass us all over again!

Oh Piss Mint......

The point being made is that this issue will always continue, as it did many years ago, and it will never change..... despite what anyone says or who screams foul..

The fact that this point was lost on you, is not entirely surprising, given that it is already almost 2pm in the afternoon and you have already started your drinking.

Tsk Tsk

Oh dear . . . maybe I should start writing shorter sentences with just a few monosyllabic words so that even doddering old fools can follow?

Uh-oh . . . Moffie's feeble little brain is probably hurting after that last sentence . . . and there, I've gone and done it again!

Moffie, don't worry. If you don't understand then it really doesn't worry me. Just get someone to help you or else go read something else. Okay?

Yes, I do remember exactly what happened in the last RWC regarding Bryce Lawrence. I remember a very large percentage of South African rugby "supporters" embarrassing themselves and the entire country by launching a hate campaign on social media against Bryce Lawrence because the blubbering little crybabies couldn't accept defeat and blamed the ref for the Springbok defeat instead of blaming the pathetic game plan that involved Skulk Burger and Victor Matfield taking on the roles of first receiver every time we won the ball and screwing up just about every backline move.

It was an absolutely disgraceful incident that saw Bryce Lawrence receiving death threats from literally thousands of mindless South African [removed]heads and the whole sad fiasco resulted in a very competent referee and thoroughly decent person having to give up his job.
I bet you're the type who remembers it somewhat differently .

"I know a lot of South African rugby supporters still blame Bryce Lawrence for the Springboks’ defeat at the hands of the Wallabies in the 2011 Rugby World Cup quarter-final, but I think they’re delusional.

For starters, Lawrence was a world-class referee and he seemed to be a thoroughly decent rugby man whose career was cut short after 2011 when thousands of indignant and tearful Bok-supporting crybabies launched a disgraceful social media smear campaign against him, along with a few death threats."

I really don't understand Dumb Ass. What is this gibbering half-wit trying to prove here?

I point out what a pathetic crybaby he's still being after all these years and his response if to go running off to his enormous Rooinek archives to dig out a few posts where I'm saying exactly the same thing as I'm saying now?

Wehe!

I was tempted to say "what a idiot" (sic) but instead I'll say . . . ummmmmm . . . thanks Dumb Ass!

Ou rooitwit doesn't have any sense of what is right and what is wrong. He is all confused by such notions so when he does opine on such matters he makes a complet twit of himself. We all know Bryce Lawrence put in probably the worst reffing display ever seen at test level. I understand the twit was fired thereafter from the IRB elite panel of refs. NZ of course made him their ref of the year which says it all and helps explain why poor rooitwit  has such an affinity fro kbbsNow when the kbbs have to the suffer the consequences of their biased refs all hell breaks loose and we have ab ASS wailing away etc etc.  He doesn' t even realize he is giving the game away. Hahahahahahahhahahaha
