Last week marked a pivotal moment for Exeter Chiefs as club members greenlighted a takeover bid by Cannae Holdings Inc’s Black Knight Sports and Entertainment, initiating a 60-day due diligence period. Rob Baxter, Exeter’s director of rugby, conveyed optimism about the club's future, though he tempered expectations with a reminder of the patience required for such transitions to yield results.

The proposed acquisition of the two-time PREM champions by the American consortium, which also holds interests in other sports entities like Premier League’s Bournemouth and FC Lorent, signifies a potentially transformative phase for the Chiefs. Yet, Baxter was quick to caution,

"What Tony (Rowe) said is the most important thing; there’s no done deal yet,"

underscoring the preliminary nature of the current proceedings.

The Chiefs have faced challenges since their PREM and European double in 2020, with significant player departures and a decline in league standings. The last playoff appearance was in 2021, followed by a notably tough season in 2024/25. This context makes the potential investment even more crucial, as Baxter highlighted the long-term perspective necessary to revitalize the club's fortunes.

"With significant investment, I would think the future moving forward over the next three or four years would be fantastically bright. I know where we can invest to significantly improve things, and we look pretty good now,"

Baxter stated, envisioning a resurgence powered by strategic enhancements, particularly in youth development and training facilities.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Baxter remains focused on immediate goals. Following a robust victory over Bath, which Baxter described as a match where

"They threw the first punch, got themselves in the game and then stayed in it,"

he is keen on steering the team back to playoff contention this season. The Chiefs have a challenging schedule ahead, with upcoming matches against Harlequins, Leicester Tigers, and Saracens, which are crucial for their top-four aspirations.

As Exeter Chiefs navigate this period of potential change, the blend of strategic long-term planning and immediate on-field tactics will be crucial. Baxter’s dual focus on nurturing future success while competing vigorously in the present encapsulates the dynamic spirit of rugby — always forward, but never forgetting the groundwork that needs to be laid.
