Mike ... Faff de Klerk has never really had much of a pass and it seems to have gotten worse as the year progressed.
His high work rate and terrier like approach made up for it in the beginning ... but these little 5m runs of his before passing the ball is just not suited to high intensity test match rugby. It's driving me insane. It makes me think of the useless Pienaar.
We need someone to provide crisp clear quick ball from the base of the ruck. That should be his primary function and he's failed at that.
Question is ... why hasn't the coach approached him about it.? Why has the coach just left him to continue with this madness? Surely he should have been spoken to?
One would think that it's the heart and soul of any back line to receive quick front foot ball ... especially if there's a game plan in place.
To make things worse ... this poor, slow service lands up in the hands of a knee knocking terrified little boy who doesn't know what to do with it.
How can any back line operate properly with this amateurish service level?
I think that the first thing we need to do to fix our back line is to look at our scrummie. Shaun Venter could be the answer.
We already know that Jantjies, Pat in his current state of mind, Morne and Fats aren't the answer at 10. That leaves us with Goosen.
What would he be-able to do if he had good, quick ball to work with?
It could very well be the answer we need to release the tremendous talent we have at 12 and 13.
You comments?

After last night's pathetic performance you still want Goosen....not very bright are you. But then you have little experience outside Denotter.

I think we have many problems in team selection and that is why I posted a log posting on the issue a while back. The problem is the mess made by Coetzee in picking unsuitable players and play them out of their normal positions. There was no consistency either.
The main problems are too long a list to get any idea of and there were some key players who were injured. Some of them were selected after long injury absence and never really recover their mojo.
I think the whole process need to be corrected and the team selected out of the following players:-
Full Back - Le Roux, Kriel or the Bulls full back who has been out with an injuryWings - Combrinck, Ulengo and another from the franchise teams in Super RugbyCenters - Van Rensburg, Virster, De AllendeFlyhalfs, - Pollard, GoosenScrummies - Reinach, De Klerk and VenterLoosies - I will set out the issue in more detail belowLocks - Etzebeth, Du Toit, Willemse/De JagerProps - Malherbe, Redelinghuys, Du Toit, Mtawarira, Kitshoff, NyakaneHookers - Marx, Van der Merwe, Marutlele
The loosies has ben a dog's biscuit for years now. We had a set of slow loosies and low work rate players with no real idea of loosie play. Vermeulen was the exception - but I do not think he wants to play for the Springboks with Coetzee as coach. Unfortunately since his fusion operation in 2015 he is not the shadow of the player he used to be.
So where to go with that situation. I would say the obious way to go is to find an entirely new loosie combination. I would say that Whiteley is not a starting loosie - but he should be used as an impact player. I would in fact select the loosies from the following:-
Opensiders - Kriel, Coetzee, Cassiem, SmithBlindisders - Labuschagne, Du Preez, WhiteleyNo 8 - Vermeulen (?), Du Preez, Van der Walt.
As long as the loosies malfunction - the backline will malfunction and there will be no front foot ball for them to use. So that problem must be solved to start with. Players like Alberts and Louw have been poor for years and must not even feature in anything.

Yes ... everything starts upfront. We all know that. The pack that lays a solid foundation will aid the back line ... no doubt.
We saw the Highlanders turn their season around a few years back by focusing on the break down. It gave them front foot ball and made a massif difference. They're now competing for top honours in the Super Rugby every year.
We never focused on the breakdown under Meyer and I'm afraid it hasn't dawned on this dumb quota coach either. Till we do we'll always find ourselves thumped by the Italy's and Japan's of the world.
You however haven't answered my question regarding Faff and the backline.
So please, if you will.

Shaun Venter is my choice. I think the Freestate team would have won at least half of the matches on this tour. We don't have a team ATM.

We need a bullet pass from the base. Not a loop de loop ping pong throw.
It's one of the things that made Fourie Du Preez so good in his day.
It stuns me that Coetzee can't see this.
Is the man blind or just plain stupid?

Coetzee is on the same wave length as Mozart and Zuma - so the idiots we will always have to disturb the environment and produce negativity.
I think De Klerk needs to have a crash course by Divan Serfontein and Robert du Preez about scrummie play and that will knock the nonsense out of him.
Basically he is a good player - but he is all screwed up about the technical part of the game and also the reading of the game.

Fourie du Preez became a Bok because he already had all those skills. He didn't pick them up from the national coach. Question is that if Faf had those flaws when he arrived at the Bok camp, why hasn't his franchise coaches not picked it up? Then again...... everybody was crapping on HM for not choosing him.
Now, I am not exonerating Coetzee. My question to Coetzee would be why he has selected him when he knew that he has those flaws? Or did he not even know about the flaws. The way I see it the clown (Coetzee) wouldn't even know about the flaws even if someone explained it to him using video clips and drawings.
