Fans assault Bulls referee

A referee from the Blue Bulls Referees Rs sociation has been admitted to hospital after allegedly being assaulted after a club game in Pretoria.

According to the Volksblad website, Marais van Zyl was hit over the head with a crash helmet and is recovering in Pretoria's Montana hospital.

It is believed that two supporters attacked van Zyl as they were upset with his performance during the game.

Van Zyl, who is suffering from bruising and swelling to the brain, can't recall much of the incident.

"All I can remember was that I was busy putting my belongings in my car when a supporter asked me why my refereeing was so s**t," he revealed.

"He hit me before I could answer. I struggled to remain conscious and opened my car door to get my cellphone. At that moment he kicked the door to squeeze me in between the door and the car.

"He then pushed me and tried to strangle me around the neck before one of my assistant referees pulled him off. Shortly afterwards I felt a huge bang and can't remember much more.

"My face was very sore afterwards and I had a massive headache."

Van Zyl heard afterwards that a second fan - presumed to be the brother of the first man who attacked him - hit him over his head with the crash helmet.

Van Zyl's wife, Surita, lodged a complaint of assault and attempted murder with the police.

The Blue Bulls Rugby Union's (BBRU) executive committee held a meeting regarding the incident on Monday night.

BBRU CEO Eugene Hare said his organisation received a statement from the referees present as well as the club.

i wonder if marias van zyl is related to that pieter van zyl, the fat disgusting Bok fan who got the shit kicked out of him by McCaw while his beloved Boks just stood there and watched, LMFAO,

man bryce lawewrence was spot on correct to refuse to ref any games in SA after the RWC, he would have been killed for sure.

the passionate mindset of our saffa rugby brethren also goes along way to explaining why Boks vs All Blacks record in SA was so heavily stacked in the Boks favour where the Boks played 22 tests and won 17, compared to the professional era where they have played 23 tests in SA and the All Blacks have won 14.

the whole world has always read or heard comments from saffa refs saying that there was no way their calls were not going to favour the Boks, because the opposition teams didnt have to live in SA while the saffa refs and their families did.

and i cant fault them one bit, saffa rugby fans have proven to be a feral mob, look at that old gezzer who bottled keven mealamu after the blues beat the bulls in loftus, the irish ref who that disgusting body part van zyl attacked, the english dude who was murdered in kings park.
like i said, i cant fault those refs back then one bit.

mozter u might know this, but of all the live Bok games u went to in ur days of future past (yes that dosent make any sense, but x men is tumeke and was worth me saying), when was the first time u noticed neutral refs??? i ask only cos i get a feeling that u might have seen it, my bad if it was before ur time, but IMO it shouldnt be.

im just trying to timeline out when the the IRB or the IRFB as it was known back then finally got sick and tired of all the complaints about the saffa refs, the bulk of which came from the NH.

Oh how the tide has turned! Now it's in NZL where we can't get a fair game. At least back in the day we took it out on the refs who were men and a lot of the cause. The kiwi way is just to go home and beat the mrs because unlike a man, she stands no chance. Just ask Julian Savea...the face of anti-domestic abuse!
Sasuke, forever throwing stones! Like you say sasuke, we can not blame the refs for their performances in NZL. They are only doing their bit to help the women! They are the real heroes!

Boklogic, think the term for Sasuke is 'throwing stones in glass houses'!

Danie Craven made an offer of neutral refs to officiate during the '76 tour.... guess who said no thanks cos they would then have to respond in kind when the Boks toured NZ ?

SheZza, not sure if u trying to show me up on something or if u are being genuine but I think we are all well aware of the saying, "one should not throw stones if they live in a glass house" but I could not really use the full saying in how I termed it. When one reads that, as u did, u will know exactly what is implied and how the saying goes. It's one of those common sayings that need no explaining!I mean, I don't really think sasuke is literally throwing stones! Or maybe he does throw stones...at his wife...after his teams lose...

SA refs are known as the consistently the best. Did this suddenly happen the day after Apartheid ended? And after this day, did New Zealand refs become better or worse?
