Fans danger to refs in SA

A referee from the Blue Bulls Referees Association has been admitted to hospital after allegedly being assaulted after a club game in Pretoria.

According to the Volksblad website, Marais van Zyl was hit over the head with a crash helmet and is recovering in Pretoria's Montana hospital.

It is believed that two supporters attacked van Zyl as they were upset with his performance during the game.

Van Zyl, who is suffering from bruising and swelling to the brain, can't recall much of the incident.

"All I can remember was that I was busy putting my belongings in my car when a supporter asked me why my refereeing was so s**t," he revealed.

"He hit me before I could answer. I struggled to remain conscious and opened my car door to get my cellphone. At that moment he kicked the door to squeeze me in between the door and the car.

"He then pushed me and tried to strangle me around the neck before one of my assistant referees pulled him off. Shortly afterwards I felt a huge bang and can't remember much more.

"My face was very sore afterwards and I had a massive headache."

Van Zyl heard afterwards that a second fan - presumed to be the brother of the first man who attacked him - hit him over his head with the crash helmet.

Van Zyl's wife, Surita, lodged a complaint of assault and attempted murder with the police.

The Blue Bulls Rugby Union's (BBRU) executive committee held a meeting regarding the incident on Monday night.

BBRU CEO Eugene Hare said his organisation received a statement from the referees present as well as the club.

  very sad to read about this, no matter where it happens.
But it seems that some SA fans (and I think and hope they are very few and could be counted with the fingers ) don't know losing. The extended habit of blaming always the ref (as many in this site practice with asiduity) doesn't help

can kiwis really say that they wouldnt act any differently if our rugby teams played ugly rugby and a trophy cabinet which over the years has been used to store spare blankets???

as a proud rugby loving nation, its my opinion that if our teams played like the saffa teams and lost as many times as they did, we would be attacking referees too.

thank God for neutral refs in international rugby, cos we all know that saffa refs wouldnt give us a fair shake in SA cos of the danger they would put themsleves and their loved ones in.

 Man you guys really have no idea. If an oak from Pretoria gets hit on the head its likely to do the least damage. Also he was probably a crooked ref and as you know we do not like bent refs being the honest people we Sa rugby fans are. A few more good klaps of bent refs may do someting to sort them out as the authoritites are clearly not doing enough.  However in kwis land they make the circular  bryce lawrence their ref of the year. It's upside down morality  downunder

Your poor wee forwards could have done with some assistance. Ol' Mutfield save the day though with his leadership & the fearless way he hit those rucks

 Crucial decisions were:
The TMO blundering by awarding Wales a try when there had been a knock on and subsequently the ball rolled over the loine. Wrong on two counts.I think Walsh saw it on the big screen but went with thw TMO.
Walsh called it correctly re the two penalty tries and the yellows. Wales cant complain they were correct calls.That said if Wales had been better disciplined they may have won.
The reason for the big fall away in the forwards was fatigue and not playing a genuine lock. Too many of our guys have played far too much rugby. Reason - no central contracting system ala nz.   More and more SA rugby journalists are finally waking up to this. Oh that the quarter wits running our rugby would wake up!!!
